Abstract

Coral reefs are vital ecosystems facing serious threats due to climate change and human activities. This research aims to evaluate the condition of live coral cover in the Sawo-Lahewa Aquatic Tourism Park (TWP) Regional Marine Conservation Area (KKPD), North Nias Regency, as an important step in conservation and sustainable management efforts. Data was collected at 8 research stations using the Underwater Photo Transect (UPT) method. The research results show that the condition of coral reefs in this area is in the damaged to moderate category, with the percentage of live coral cover ranging between 12.33-45.37% and an average of 26.65%. The highest percentage of coral cover was found on Sarangbaung Island (45.37%) in the medium category, followed by Makora Island (42.13%), Gita Island (35.35%), and Lafau Island (31.07%). Meanwhile, locations with the lowest cover in the damaged category include Gosobaohi_01 Island (18.25%), Gosobaohi_02 Island (15.60%), Sifahandro Sea Waters (13.13%), and Bengkuang Bay Waters (12.33%). This research also looks at the abundance of coral juveniles, coral fish, and megabenthos to provide a broad picture of the health of the coral reef ecosystem. The results of this research can become a scientific basis for developing more effective management strategies. Apart from that, it is also a form of supporting conservation efforts, helping restore damaged ecosystems, and increasing the resilience of coral reefs to future environmental threats.Keywords:  Coral Reefs, Regional Marine Conservation Area, North Nias

Abstract

Mantis shrimp, Harpiosquilla raphidea, an economically important commodity in Karang Gading, Deli Serdang, is at risk of population decline owing to uncontrolled fishing. This study was conducted to analyze population density, morphometric characteristics, distribution patterns, and correlations between physicochemical parameters and mantis shrimp density. The research was conducted in the Karang Gading wildlife sanctuary of Deli Serdang from July to September 2021, with sampling performed at three stations chosen by purposive random sampling. The total number of mantis shrimp individuals caught was 66, with a density of 4,83 ind/m2, on station 2 of 3,83 ind/m2, and station 3 of 2,33 ind/m2. Morphometric characters that have a strongly correlated effect were found in station 2 (total length with carapace length), a weakly correlated was obtained at station 1 (total length with carapace length), station 2 (total length with abdominal width, total length with telson width and total length with propodus length), station 3 (total length with carapace length, total length with abdominal width, total length with telson width and total length with propodus length) and moderately correlated was obtained at station 1 (total length with abdominal width, total length with telson width and total length with propodus length), all relationships between morphometric characters showed negative allometric growth patterns. The relationship between the total length and weight was obtained by the value of b < 3, which is a negative allometric. The distribution patterns at each station were categorized as grouped and unified, with an Id value of 0,791 – 1,004. The analysis results that strongly correlated and valued positively were salinity, current speed, and Dissolved Oxygen (DO); those with strong correlation and negative values were temperature, water brightness, and BOD5; moderately correlated and valued positively were pH and nitrate; strongly correlated and negatively valued (water depth); and weakly correlated and negative (phosphate).

Abstract

The Asahan River, located in the Tanjungbalai city area, is used for plantation, agriculture, animal husbandry activities, toilet washing facilities, hospitals, hotels, settlements, and industry causing the decrease water quality of Asahan River. The purpose of this study was to analyze the water quality and status of the Asahan River water quality in the Tanjungbalai City Area and develop a pollution control strategy that needs to be implemented to prevent a decrease in the Asahan River water quality in the Tanjungbalai City Area. Purposive sampling technique as used to determine the sampling station. In this study, there were 6 sampling stations based on the activities of the local community with 3 repetitions of sampling. The data analysis techniques from this study are Water Quality Analysis using the Pollution Index (IP) Method and Water Pollution Control Strategy Analysis. The results of water quality analysis based on the pollution index on Asahan river water in Tanjungbalai City show that the average water pollution index is in the moderately polluted category. The maximum of river water pollution index results were at station 2 is 9,086 and the minimum of river water pollution index results were at station 5 is 6,111.Water pollution occurs due to the parameters of phosphate, detergent, oil and grease, and total coliform which have exceeded the quality standard threshold based on Government Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia Number 21 of the year 2022 concerning Management of Water Quality and Control of Class I Water Pollution.Keywords:Asahan RiverWater pollution IndexWater Quality

Abstract

Plankton is an aquatic biota that lives following the currents in the water.  The life of plankton is highly dependent on the water quality in those aquatic environments. The constantly changing physical and chemical conditions of water lead to fluctuations in the abundance of plankton in a water. This study aims to analyze fluctuations in plankton abundance and its correlation with water quality in Percut Sei Tuan Waters. The study was conducted in February and March 2023. Filtration method at 3 stations is the Sampling technique used in this study. The sampling period is carried out in the morning, afternoon, and evening. Data analysis to determine the relationship between variables using Pearson correlation in SPSS version 26. Based on the research results, 42 genera of phytoplankton and 16 genera of zooplankton were found. The highest abundance of phytoplankton was 4.635 Ind/L during the afternoon. The highest abundance of zooplankton was obtained at evening, which was 1.049 Ind/L. This is due to the daily vertical migration of zooplankton and their negative phototactic behavior, while phytoplankton require light for photosynthesis. The research results indicate that the abundance of phytoplankton has a very strong correlation with temperature, light intensity, salinity, TSS, pH, DO, and Nitrate. The abundance of zooplankton is highly correlated with water flow velocity, light intensity, salinity, TSS, TDS, pH, DO, Nitrate, and Phosphate.

Abstract

Sediments are temporary and long-term reservoirs for waste including microplastic particles.  Microplastics are large-sized plastics that are under 5mm in size. microplastic particles with a density greater than water can enter the sediment and accumulate. High water utilization activities can be a way for plastic waste from land to enter the waters, one of the rivers that has high utilization is the Siak River in Pekanbaru city. This study aims to analyze the abundance and distribution of microplastics based on 3 (three) stations in the Siak River. The research procedure consists of sampling, microplastic separation, and microplastic analysis. The results showed that the Siak River in Pekanbaru city contained microplastic types of fragments (32%), films (31%), fibers (25%), and granules (12%). The highest abundance of microplastics was at station 1 with an average abundance of 32.67/kg which was dominated by fragment-type microplastics. The Siak River in Pekanbaru city has been contaminated with microplastics which can be intentionally or unintentionally eaten by aquatic biota.

Abstract

ABSTRAKPenelitian ini untuk menganalisis kelimpahan mikroplastik, mengidentifikasi tipe dan warna mikroplastik pada perairan Belawan, provinsi Sumatera Utara. Pengambilan sampel air permukaan kedalaman ±20 cm (500 mL/ulangan) dilakukan secara sederhana di tiga stasiun pengamatan, disaring menggunakan plankton net. Prosedur analisis di laboratorium meliputi:  1) penyaringan bertingkat menggunakan saringan berukuran 5 mm dan 300 µm, 2) destruksi bahan organik menggunakan H₂O₂ 30%, 3) pemisahan densitas menggunakan larutan NaCl 30%, 4) penyaringan akhir sampel air menggunakan whatman no. 42, dan 5) identifikasi menggunakan mikroskop binokuler dengan perbesaran 10×. Kelimpahan mikroplastik konsentrasi tertinggi ditemukan di stasiun 1 titik koordinat 3°47'26,268″N 98°40'45"E dengan rata-rata kelimpahan 110 ± 16,37 partikel/L, kemudian stasiun 2 titik koordinat 3°47'29,484″N 98°40′57,486"E dengan rata-rata kelimpahan 90,67 ± 14,74 partikel/L, dan rata-rata kelimpahan terendah 55,33 ± 17 partikel/L di stasiun 3 titik koordinat 3°47'16,686″N 98°40'56,682"E. Untuk variasi tipe yang ditemukan, fiber merupakan tipe dominan (33-50%), disusul tipe fragmen (28-48%), film (12-16%) , foam (3-7%) , dan tipe paling sedikit pellet (3-5%). Untuk sebaran warna yang ditemukan paling banyak adalah transparan (15-33%), disusul warna biru (15-28%), merah (13-19%), hitam (9-16%), putih (7-9%), abu-abu (0-6%), hijau (4-7%), orange (0-4%), kuning (2-4%), cokelat (1-6%), dan warna yang paling sedikit ungu (0-1%). Menunjukkan bahwa pencemaran wilayah ini bersumber masukan limbah dari Daerah Aliran Sungai (DAS) Kota Medan yang terperangkap di muara, pelepasan limbah domestik dan rumah tangga, serta aktivitas maritim langsung ke perairan. Tingginya kontaminasi mikroplastik ini memerlukan intervensi kebijakan pengelolaan sampah yang terpadu dan berkelanjutan dari pemerintah daerah.Kata Kunci: Air, Kelimpahan Mikoroplastik, Perairan Belawan, Tipe Mikroplastik, Warna MikroplastikABSTRACTThis study aims to analyse the abundance of microplastics and identify the types and colours of microplastics in the waters of Belawan, North Sumatra province. Surface water samples at a depth of ±20 cm (500 mL/repetition) were collected simply at three observation stations and filtered using a plankton net. The laboratory analysis procedure included: 1) multi-stage filtration using 5 mm and 300 µm sieves, 2) destruction of organic material using 30% H₂O₂, 3) density separation using 30% NaCl solution, 4) final filtration of water samples using Whatman No. 42, and 5) identification using a binocular microscope with 10× magnification. The highest concentration of microplastics was found at station 1 at coordinates 3°47'26.268″N 98°40'45"E with an average abundance of 110 ± 16.37 particles/L, followed by station 2 at coordinates 3°47'29.484″N 98 °40′57.486″E with an average abundance of 90.67 ± 14.74 particles/L, and the lowest average abundance of 55.33 ± 17 particles/L at station 3 at coordinates 3°47'16.686″N 98°40'56.682″E. Regarding the types found, fibre was the dominant type (33-50%), followed by fragments (28-48%), film (12-16%), foam (3-7%), and the least common type, pellets (3-5%). The most common colour distribution was transparent (15-33%), followed by blue (15-28%), red (13-19%), black (9-16%), white (7-9%), grey (0-6%), green (4-7%), orange (0-4%), yellow (2-4%), brown (1-6%), and the least common colour purple (0-1%). This indicates that pollution in this area originates from waste input from the Medan City Watershed (DAS) trapped at the estuary, domestic and household waste discharge, and maritime activities directly into the water. The high level of microplastic contamination requires integrated and sustainable waste management policy interventions from the local government.Keywords: Water, Microplastic Abundance, Belawan Estuary, Microplastic Types, Microplastic Colors
