Abstract

This article aims spesifically to discuss the experiences of Muhammadiyah and NU in eradicating corruption and upholding public integrity. This topic is important because Muhammadiyah and NU showed serious effort of eradicating corruption and upholding public integrity. According to Muhammadiyah and NU, corruption could clearly harm the state economy, reduce public welfare, destroy social morality, demolish political and legal systems, threat national defense, and hammer natural resources. Indeed, Muhammadiyah and NU never explicitly use the term “anti-corruption”. However, viewed from the substance of their acitivities, they do engage in eradicating corruption. Muhammadiyah and NU seek to uphold public integrity, such as the advocating of transparent state budget use. These two Muslim organizations agenda in this project include encouraging public awareness of the budge planning and composition and its implemention. Interestingly, Muhammadiyah and NU also use mass media to promote their agenda of upholding public integrity. It can be observed throught the publication of activities and accountability reports published in Matan and Suara Muhammadiyah, two magazines affiliated with Muhammadiyah, and Aula, NU community monthly journal. In addition, they also collaborate with other media, such as newspaper and private radio and television to build up a culture of public integrity.

Abstract

This article deals with Muhammadiyah’s view of the inter-connection between religion and culture. Religion is a divine product while culture is a human invention. How these two different domains are inter-related will be a kind of formidable task to expose. To do this, the paper will discuss first the possible relation between Muhammadiyah and Salafiyah as far as theology is concerned. Many have contended that Muhammadiyah is an extension of this rabian theology. The paper will try to trace if there is any such theological relation between the two by appealing to some basic concepts that both Muhamadiyah and Salafiyah hold such as the concept of puritanism; that the Qur’an and the prophetic traditions are the sole sources for both religion and culture. But we also try to explore the unique aspect of each movement of which the other does not share. Thus, Muhammadiyah—unlike Salafiyah—has a good deal of awareness in culture and even adopts the “cultural approach” in propagating Islam. As a religious organization whose task lies mainly in calling people into Islam, Muhammadiyah has advocated what is commonly known as the “dakwah cultural”; a cultural approach in dakwah. For this purpose, Muhammadiyah has designed a guidebook on how “dakwah kultural” is carried out, its steps, and strategies. In writing his paper, we hope to shed a better light on the objective nature of Muhammadiyah and its view concerning religion and culture.

Abstract

This article analyses the character and nature of succession in the Pre-IslamicArabic society and in the period of al-Khulafâ’ al-Rashidûn. It assumes that both periodsshare a lot in common in terms of conditions of leadership, which include seniority, bravery, generosity, good and noble family background, and the ability to safeguard thetribe. The principle of consultation (mushâwarah), which Islam talks about on manyoccasions, is also present in the two periods. This is despite the fact that during theperiod of al-Khulafâ’ al-Râshidûn there were such practices as direct election –in the caseof Abû Bakr and ‘Alî b. Abî Tâlib-, appointment by the former caliph –in the case of‘Umar b. Khattâb- and election by a committee appointed by the caliph in the case of‘Uthmân b. ‘Affân.

Abstract

This article deals with the issue of religious pluralism in the view of the leading authorities within Muhammadiyah. The paper argues that the scholars of the organization develop a unique view of religious pluralism in line with the vision of the founding fathers. Apart from some “discursive distortion” that these scholars might have undergone in the process of developing the discourse, their view deserves some appreciation for its depth and originality. The paper tries to show that there is indeed a tension between the cadres of the organization on the problem at hand. To dwell into this tension, the paper distinguishes between two major groups within the organization, namely that which accepts the notion of religious pluralism, and that which rejects it. The former includes such well-known scholars as Syafii Maarif, Amin Abdullah, Abdul Munir Mulkhan, and Moeslim Abdurrahman, whereas the latter includes the preachers and mosque-activists. Apart from these two groups, the paper will also look at the particular role that the Muhammadiyah’s Youth Movement has played in discourse-development among the members of the organization. Hence, the areas that the paper will cover include those that have been well-represented by the most admitted elements of the organization.

Abstract

This article discusses about trend positivism and non-positivism paradigm in jurisprudence. This topic is important because discourse in social philosophy always relies on the rationality of whole arguments. The argument of justification is preceded through deductive reasoning, starting from paradigmatic premise that will be used to justify conclusion. Paradigmatic premise is the basic principles of truth which is believed to be the real truth. The real truth derives from personal experience in reflecting facts found in daily activities. In contemporary context of jurisprudence, there is a fierce battle between legal profesionals with its positivist paradigm (legal or formal law approach) and legal profesionals with its non-positivistic paradigm (legal morale substance approach). Many critics on positivism were responded by efforts to reform law through social movements. Social realist movement derives from diverse reality of socio-cultural configuration, within national life, will be significant when the movement is massively done, and supported by two pilars of civil society and political power. This opposition movement shall be continuously done to against the established side. The well established community has authority upon whole legal institution and usually will utilize all its power structures in order to maintain their interest.

Abstract

The article asserts that plurality?particularly with respect to religious understanding?is a certainty and an avoidable matter, which should be wisely addressed. This is a pivotal issue as the fact shows us that Indonesia, naturally and culturally, consists of various different ethnic groups. Bhinneka Tuggal Ika?as national watchword?affirms that Indonesia is founded on diversity and difference. However, Indonesian nation has to unite despite of its diversity. In addition, Indonesia is also called a colorful state. This statement refers to the fact that there are a vast number of different ethnic groups, cultures, and religions that live and exist in this country. Empirically, plurality has often caused social conflicts which involve interfaith groups with different religious understanding. The conflict occurs when these different groups are unprepared to live together harmoniously and build coexistence. Therefore, it is important to continuously promote the values of pluralism and multiculturalism in order to create a better life order based on acceptance, respect, and tolerance. To do so, emotional and intellectual intelligences?as ?social modal??are urgently required. The writer argues that this is a way?if not the sole?to bring about solution to the problem of religious plurality and religious understanding.
