Abstract

The article asserts that plurality—particularly with respect to religious understanding—is a certainty and an avoidable matter, which should be wisely addressed. This is a pivotal issue as the fact shows us that Indonesia, naturally and culturally, consists of various different ethnic groups. Bhinneka Tuggal Ika—as national watchword—affirms that Indonesia is founded on diversity and difference. However, the Indonesian nation has to unite despite its diversity. In addition, Indonesia is also called a colourful state. This statement refers to the fact that there are a vast number of different ethnic groups, cultures, and religions that live and exist in this country. Empirically, plurality has often caused social conflicts which involve interfaith groups with different religious understanding. The conflict occurs when these different groups are unprepared to live together harmoniously and build coexistence. Therefore, it is important to continuously promote the values of pluralism and multiculturalism in order to create a better life order based on acceptance, respect, and tolerance. To do so, emotional and intellectual intelligence—as “social modal”—are urgently required. The writer argues that this is a way—if not the sole—to bring about a solution to the problem of religious plurality and religious understanding.

Abstract

This article  explores  the concepts of  religious pluralism  in  the perspective ofSemitic  religions:  Judaism, Christianity,  and  Islam. As Semitic  religions,  thethree actually share some teaching similarities in the field of theology.  But, inso a long history development,  it turns out that there are some differences  intheir  theological  teachings. The  power  history  and  politics  factors  have  alsoinfluenced  the relation between  the  followers of  the Semitic religions. There-fore,  it  is  important  to explore deeply  the concepts of pluralism  in  the  threereligions and also the development of the thoughts about the religious plural-ism among  the philosophers and  theologians  in  each of  the  religion. This  isdue  to  the  fact  that  in  this  present  context,  all  religions  in  this  globe  facesimilar problems dealing with the pluralism where one of the indicators is theoccurrence of  radicalism even  terrorism cases  involving  the  followers of eachreligion. The  triggering  factor  is    that  the  followers  of  each  religion  are notready  to  live  in  diversity.  It  is  due  to  the  high  amount  of  socio-religion-nu-anced radicalism cases that a number of thinkers from the three religions havebeen  trying  to    reformulate  the meanings of pluralism  in  the present contextwith  the  target  to have  some active  involvements among  the  followers of  theSemitic  religions  to  solve  the  plurality  problem. At  present  there  is  someawareness  among  the  thinkers  that  each  group  of  religion  should  not  have some  thoughts  that  they  are  the  best,  and  it  is  only  they  that  possess    theheaven. Such a claim  is growing  from a group’s subjectivity. If this happens,  itmeans that there is a threat to any efforts in implanting the values of pluralism.

Abstract

This article analyses the character and nature of succession in the Pre-Islamic Arabic society and in the period of al-Khulafā al-Rashidūn. It assumes that both periods share a lot in common in terms of conditions of leadership, which include seniority, bravery, generosity, good and noble family background, and the ability to safeguard the tribe. The principle of consultation (mushāwarah), which Islam talks about on many occasions, is also present in the two periods. This is despite the fact that during the period of al-Khulafā al-Rashidūn there were such practices as direct election in the case of Abi Bakr and Al b. Abi Talib-, appointment by the former caliph ?in the case of Umar b. Khattib- and election by a committee appointed by the caliph in the case of Uthmān b. Affin.

Abstract

This article deals with Muhammadiyah?s view of the inter-connection between religion and culture. Religion is a divine product while culture is a human invention. How these two different domains are inter-related will be a kind of formidable task to expose. To do this, the paper will discuss first the possible relation between Muhammadiyah and Salafiyah as far as theology is concerned. Many have contended that Muhammadiyah is an extension of this rabian theology. The paper will try to trace if there is any such theological relation between the two by appealing to some basic concepts that both Muhamadiyah and Salafiyah hold such as the concept of puritanism; that the Qur?an and the prophetic traditions are the sole sources for both religion and culture. But we also try to explore the unique aspect of each movement of which the other does not share. Thus, Muhammadiyah?unlike Salafiyah?has a good deal of awareness in culture and even adopts the ?cultural approach? in propagating Islam. As a religious organization whose task lies mainly in calling people into Islam, Muhammadiyah has advocated what is commonly known as the ?dakwah cultural?; a cultural approach in dakwah. For this purpose, Muhammadiyah has designed a guidebook on how ?dakwah kultural? is carried out, its steps, and strategies. In writing his paper, we hope to shed a better light on the objective nature of Muhammadiyah and its view concerning religion and culture.

Abstract

This article deals with the issue of religious pluralism in the view of the leading authorities within Muhammadiyah. The paper argues that the scholars of the organization develop a unique view of religious pluralism in line with the vision of the founding fathers. Apart from some ?discursive distortion? that these scholars might have undergone in the process of developing the discourse, their view deserves some appreciation for its depth and originality. The paper tries to show that there is indeed a tension between the cadres of the organization on the problem at hand. To dwell into this tension, the paper distinguishes between two major groups within the organization, namely that which accepts the notion of religious pluralism, and that which rejects it. The former includes such well-known scholars as Syafii Maarif, Amin Abdullah, Abdul Munir Mulkhan, and Moeslim Abdurrahman, whereas the latter includes the preachers and mosque-activists. Apart from these two groups, the paper will also look at the particular role that the Muhammadiyah?s Youth Movement has played in discourse-development among the members of the organization. Hence, the areas that the paper will cover include those that have been well-represented by the most admitted elements of the organization.

Abstract

This article discusses moderation and religious practices in the pandemic era. The discussion in this article uses a philosophical perspective. This discussion is vital because the pandemic era has changed people’s religious frame of mind, attitudes, and behaviour. It is not only the religion of Muslims who have changed, but also non-Muslims. Therefore, this article seeks to elaborate on the religious model of the people during the pandemic and the arguments put forward by religious figures who are members of religious organizations. The conclusion from the discussion in this article is that religious moderation in the pandemic era has been reflected in various religious activities, such as worshipping at home, working and studying from home, awareness of taking part in vaccination, mutual social help (al-ta‘āwun), and worshipping virtually. These religious practices refer to the Qur’ān, H{adīth, views of ulama, and scientific and health considerations. In essence, religious people understand that maintaining personal health and safety must be prioritized.

Abstract

Salafism and Ash’arism have debated the issue of anthropomorphism verses for a long time. In modern days, both followers spread the debate through social media. This article will discuss Indonesian Salafist’s statement on interpreting anthropomorphism verses on YouTube. We will use Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) from Fairclough’s perspective to investigate how such discursive practices arise from and are ideologically shaped by power relations and power struggles. We conclude that the Salafists frame Ash’arite as Ahl al-Bid’ah because they distort the meaning of anthropomorphic verses. Salafi groups try to present rational arguments for their beliefs to convey to the public that what they believe is rational. As part of the global Salafist movement, the Indonesian Salafists spread their thoughts through various channels on YouTube and received a negative response from Nahdatul Ulama, an Ash’arite adherent, in the comments column. From a power relationship perspective, we can read that the Salafist group is trying to spread its theology to society. Ash’arism, as the majority sect in Indonesia, is trying to defend itself from the spread of Salafism.
