Abstract

We present a theoretical model of atmospheric transparencies for tropical region of Indonesia in the framework of developing multi-wavelength astronomical observations. The wavelengths of interest are radio, infrared, and optical domains. Beside science objectives, sky transparencies are needed to determine the corresponding wavelength band to be optimized in the observatory design. A clear sky condition is then assumed in the model and a line-by-line radiative transfer code is used at high spectral resolution.  The results, combined with study on meteorological satellite data, are utilized to provide various information to select the best possible sites for a new astronomical observatory in Indonesia.

Abstract

We present initial studies to search for the best possible sites for an astronomical observatory in Indonesia. Since the country occupies a vast geographical area, in so doing, we analyzed a number of basic atmospheric parameters based on GMS-NOAA meteorological satellite data at a low spatial resolution to identify some interesting feasible locations. The selected parameters are outgoing long wave radiation, temperature, precipitation, relative humidity, precipitable water, and wind profile, mostly available for a period of several decades. The data are averaged over 30 years to obtain a monthly average profile of Indonesian meteorological situation. The results suggest that regions of Nusa Tenggara Timur could offer promising sites and is merit to be explored further.

Abstract

Global meteorological study over Indonesia has identified that Nusa Tenggara Timur is a good candidate for an astronomical site. West Timor, in the eastern region of Nusa Tenggara Timur, is subsequently selected to be surveyed both for topographical and sky quality. The latter is studied theoretically in term of transmittance of tropical atmosphere. This work presents in situ measurement undertaken for Kupang (longitude: 123° 34¢ 4² E, latitude: 10° 10¢ 19² S) to derive the seeing values. The same procedure was also performed for Lembang, West Java (longitude: 107° 36¢ 58² E, latitude: 6° 49¢ 33² S) in order to quantitatively compare the proposing site to the established one. Our result shows that Kupang has about 50% better seeing condition than that of Lembang.

Abstract

Habitable zone in a planetary system is defined as the region around a star where life-supporting planets can exist. Typically it requires the presence of liquid water on the planetary surface. Considering the formation of planetary systems, we investigate how stellar mass affects the probability of terrestrial planets formed within habitable zone. We use our Planetary System Generator code (Yamani, 2007) to generate planetary systems by investigating its sensitivity through several parameters, such as stellar mass, stellar luminosity, and effective temperature. The probability of finding terrestrial planets within the habitable zone of extrasolar planetary system has been then calculated. We selected the exoplanet systems: Gl 581, HD 128311, 55 Cnc, 47 UMa, and Ups And-like to evaluate the presence of planets within their habitable zone.

Abstract

This paper presents a Monte Carlo simulation, using Planetary System Generator, which has been built based on a simple accretion model by Dole (1970) and by considering the present structure of the Solar System. Data of known extrasolar planets have also been taken into account.   It was then applied to generate 47 Ursae Majoris (47UMa)-like planetary systems. The results are subsequently compared to the observed data of 47UMa. The dynamical evolution as well as the stability of the system have been evaluated by using a n-body formalism accounted for in our simulation. The generated system reproduced approximately the observational data and suggests that some other accompanying planets may exist. The orbital evolution is also found to be stable within the current age of the system.

Abstract

Abstract

Kata-kata kunci: partikel granular, dinamika molekuler, asteroid, kompaksi. Abstract An asteroid is assumed to be constucted from particles inealastic collision, which later forms an agregate of particles. Binding between particles is caused only by gravitational force. Normal force is introduced to prevent two particles collapsing into single point as they are colliding and attracted to to each other due to gravitational force. Contactotpy as parameter is presented and it is observed that its value increasing as the agregate becoming denser, and at the end it achieves saturation value. In the simulated system with number of particles N = 22 it is obtained that the contactopy reaches saturation value C = 35. Keywords: granular particles, molecular dynamics, asteroid, compaction

Abstract

Inconsistencies between asteroid’s evolutionary model and observational results have been convincingly explained by thermal radiation effects that cause asteroids to experience orbital drifts. To investigate influences of the effects, we conducted 10 million yr orbital integration of hypothetical sub-km sized Main-belt asteroids. Numerical integration was run to propagate orbital dynamics of the asteroids by taking into account typical physical parameters of regolith- and basaltic-type surfaces of asteroids. Delivery processes from the Main-belt asteroids to near-Earth space are occurred by the aids of planetary orbital resonances and gravitational perturbations. In general, we find that thermal radiation effects play as an important role in the early evolution (< 1 million yr), which guide the asteroids to follow different evolutionary paths than those of without involving the effects. This study indicates that asteroids whose surface belongs to basaltic-type have higher orbital mobility.

Abstract

On 9-10 May 2006 UT comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 (73P/SW3) passed 0.093 AU from the Earth, being slightly farther away than its discovery on 1930. Interestingly, it has been reported since 1995 that the comet has been breaking up to many components during its trajectory orbiting the Sun with a period of 5.4 years. Here we report our CCD photometric observations of major components B and C during its 2006 apparition. Successful observations were done on 12-14 May 2006 UT at the Bosscha Observatory, Lembang. Since comet is a moving object, we carried out stacking techniques to combine our images in order to strengthen the signal-to-noise ratio. Our investigations to their surface brightness show that the coma of 73P/SW3 was not in a steady state. Under assumption of a steady state coma, the dust production rate of the component is found to be 24.7 cm and the mass-loss rate of 4.94 kg s-1

Abstract

Moringa plant (Moringa oleifera) is known as “The Miracle Plant” due to its nutrient content and extensive health benefits. This research discusses the design and implementation of an automation system for the production of Moringa (Moringa oleifera) tea bags using a Mitsubishi FX3U 24MR Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). Moringa is a tropical food crop with high nutritional value and therapeutic benefits. With the increasing demand for tea bags, an efficient production system is needed to increase productivity and reduce costs. This research designs an automatic teabags machine that utilizes PLC to control various components in the production process, including grinding machine, mixer machine, and oven machine. The research method includes designing PLC hardware and software schematics, testing components, and analyzing test result data. The results show that the PLC system is effective in controlling the production process, improving efficiency and product quality, and reducing the involvement of human labor. The conclusion of this research is that the use of PLC in the moringa teabag production automation system offers an efficient solution, the speed of the ac motor can be adjusted through giving the setting value of PWM which affects the motor terminal voltage (Vt), the greater the PWM setting value, the higher the number of motor rotations (rpm). Vice versa, the smaller the PWM setting value, the lower the number of motor revolutions (rpm).
