Abstract

The Rebo Wekasan ritual which has become a tradition in various regions of the archipelago aims to seek safety from the arrival of danger and is a form of guarding or rejecting reinforcements and asking to be protected from harm. The purpose of this study was to investigate how Rebo Wekasan as a ritual in building the collective trust of the Karundang community as an effort to grow social resilience in a pandemic. This study uses social construction theory. The approach used is qualitative by interviewing the leader of the neighborhood association, a religious leader, the daughter of a traditional leader, and one citizen. The main results of this research, obtained through thematic analysis, are first, while most people construct the Rebo Wekasan ritual as an effort to reject reinforcements and maintain tradition, some see it as simply an attempt to reduce stress due to the pandemic; second, while these constructions are different, the three of them together can encourage collective resilience in the form of stress reduction; third, related to mechanisms, three ways allow construction to lead to collective resilience, namely through traditional mechanisms, functional mechanisms, and pragmatic mechanisms. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the community's construction of the Rebo Wekasan ritual led to several mechanisms, resulting in community resilience in facing the pandemic.

Abstract

Rapid urbanization has accelerated waste generation in medium-sized Indonesian cities, including Serang City, Banten Province, which produced approximately 584.83 tonnes of waste per day in 2023, while the reduction rate reached only 0.77 percent. This gap indicates that a purely infrastructural approach to waste management is insufficient without engaging citizens in behavioural change. This study aims to construct a conceptual model of social change communication that can encourage the adoption of zero waste behaviour among the urban population of Serang City. A qualitative descriptive method through library research (desk study) was applied, synthesising secondary data from scientific journals, government reports, and regional regulations published between 2019 and 2024. Data were analysed using an interactive qualitative content-analysis technique consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, informed by diffusion of innovation theory, social marketing, and community-based social marketing. The results indicate that behavioural adoption in Serang is shaped by five interrelated communication stages: awareness building, participatory persuasion and education, social engagement through local change agents, institutionalisation through digital incentive systems, and evaluation with public feedback. The proposed model emphasises the integration of local socio-cultural values, such as mutual cooperation (gotong royong), with digital waste-bank incentives to sustain behavioural change. This model offers a contextual communication framework that local governments and environmental agencies can adapt to strengthen community participation in sustainable urban waste management.

Abstract

Human civilization, especially with its exploitative and unsustainable development activities, has made environmental issues an unavoidable discussion, including in Indonesia. Amid the ecological crisis, the Baduy indigenous community in Kanekes Village, Lebak Regency, Banten, maintains a distinctive way of relating to nature that is inseparable from their oral traditions and customary narratives. This study aims to analyze how ecological narratives are constructed within the Baduy community and how local collectivity functions as an agent driving environmental social change, both within the community and beyond it. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method through a literature review and narrative discourse analysis of scientific articles, reports, and documentation on the Baduy community published between 2019 and 2024. Data were analyzed through thematic categorization covering narrative reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that Baduy ecological narratives are constructed through the pikukuh (customary law), the three-zone forest classification, and taboo systems that are continuously reproduced through oral tradition and communal ritual. This narrative construction strengthens collective solidarity, which in turn becomes social capital that drives collective action in forest conservation, resistance to exploitative development, and the diffusion of ecological values to the wider public through media exposure. The study concludes that ecological narrative and local collectivity are mutually reinforcing components that position the Baduy not merely as passive holders of local wisdom, but as active agents of environmental social change.

Abstract

The rapid growth of social media use in Indonesia has opened new opportunities for environmental communication to move beyond awareness-raising toward collective action. This study examines the effectiveness of social media campaigns in encouraging collective environmental action among residents of Kota Serang, Banten. Using a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, data were collected through an online survey of 150 social media users who had been exposed to environmental campaign content (waste management, river conservation, and green open-space advocacy), complemented by in-depth interviews with six campaign organizers and participants. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression, while qualitative data were analyzed thematically. Results show that message framing, visual content, and perceived collective efficacy significantly predict participation in offline collective action, whereas the number of likes and shares alone does not guarantee behavioral engagement. Campaigns combining personalized storytelling with clear calls to organized action generated higher participation than those relying solely on informational content. The study concludes that social media campaigns effectively mobilize collective environmental action in Kota Serang when they build a shared identity and sense of collective efficacy, rather than merely achieving broad exposure. These findings contribute to digital social change communication theory and offer practical guidance for environmental communicators and local government.
