Abstract

Radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting systems are enabling new evolution towards charging low energy wireless devices, especially wireless sensor networks (WSN). This evolution is sparked by the development of low-energy micro-controller units (MCU). This article presents a practical multiple input multiple output (MIMO) RF energy-harvesting platform for WSN. The RF energy is sourced from a dedicated access point (AP). The sensor node is equipped with multiple antennas with diverse frequency responses. Moreover, the platform allows for simultaneous information and energy transfer without sacrificing system duplexity, unlike time-switching RF harvesting systems where data is transmitted only for a portion of the total transmission duty cycle, or power-splitting systems where the power difference between the information signal (IS) and energy signal (ES) is neglected. The proposed platform addresses the gap between those two. Furthermore, system simulation and two energy scheduling methods between AP and sensor node (SN) are presented, namely, Continuous power stream (CPS) and intermittent power stream (IPS).

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to presents analyses for multicast network mobility management using NS3. It is mainly to verify the proposed network architecture and its activities.  NS3 is a network simulator that implements virtually network prototype that is close to real implementation. Network mobility management has become a popular topic in networking research due to its ability to mitigate mobile IPv6 problems. However the standard network mobility management only introduced to support unicast traffic. Hence this paper integrates context transfer and multicast fast reroute, and implements this integration to the standard network mobility management. This implementation enables multicast to network mobility management with high network performance support. The analyses focus on the throughput performance. The analyses of this simulator are hereby presented.

Abstract

Real time applications with strict QoS like delay sensitive applications require an advanced technology to adopt them. This is where Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) fulfills this requirement. With this ever evolving technology the need for improvements is required. Packet scheduling is one of the important key features of LTE-A, where it dictates user selection and transmission of those user’s packets based on the priority of the users to reach the receiver correctly. Packet scheduling is one mean to achieve those QoS requirements that real-time applications require. Such algorithms are HARQ Aware Scheduling Algorithm (HAS), Retransmission Aware Proportional Fair Algorithm (RAPF), Chase Combining Based Max C/I Scheduling and Maximum- Largest WeightedDealy First algorithm (M-LWDF). In this paper, M-LWDF is one of the best algorithms in LTE-A which was chosen for further investigated to support QoS in high mobility environment. Packet Loss Ratio (PLR), and Mean User Throughput performance measures were used to validate the performance of M-LWDF algorithm against other algorithms using similar mobile environment. Simulation results indicate the capability of M-LWDF algorithm within the threshold of the performance measures against other benchmarks where it has demonstrated more efficiency to support and improve the performance of real-time multimedia traffic.

Abstract

Quality of Service based packet scheduling is a key-feature of LTE-A mandating selection and transmission of individual user packets based on their priority. HARQ Aware Scheduling, Retransmission Aware Proportional Fair, Chase Combining Based Max C/I Scheduling and Maximum- Largest Weighted First (M-LWDF) are popular Packet Scheduling Algorithms (PSAs) developed to meet QoS requirements. In highly erroneous LTE-A cannel, M-LWDF is considered to be one of best PSA. To validate the performance of M-LWDF for the LTE-A channel, Mean User Throughout, and Fairness performance measures were evaluated for 3 different PSAs designed based on M-LWDF algorithm in this paper. A C++ based simulation results indicate the superiority of the PSA3 algorithm within the threshold of the performance measures against benchmarks. It has shown more efficiency and the performance of RTA traffic was enhanced. Results show that PSA3 is superior to its benchmark PSA2 by 12% in Mean User Throughput and 11% in Fairness. PSA2 performed the worst because it prioritizes new users and it allocated all available RBs to the scheduled user leaving the rest to wait in the buffer. PSA3 maintians good Mean User Throughput and fairnessdue to scheduling each user on its RB which leads to multi-user diversity.

Abstract

The allocation of radio resources is one of the most critical functions performed by the Radio Resource Management (RRM) mechanisms in the downlink Long Term Evolution – Advanced (LTE-Advanced). Packet scheduling concerns itself with allocation of these radio resources in an intelligent manner such that system throughput/capacity can be maximized whilst the required multimedia Quality of Service (QoS) is met. Majority of the previous studies of packet scheduling algorithms for LTE-Advanced did not take the effect of channel impairments into account. However, in real world the channel impairments cannot be obliterated completely and have a direct impact on the packet scheduling performance. As such, this work studies the impact of channel impairments on packet scheduling performance in a practical downlink LTE-Advanced. The simulation results obtained demonstrate the efficacy of RM2 scheduling algorithm over other scheduling algorithms in maximizing the system capacity and is more robust on the effect of the cellular channel impairments.

Abstract

Real Time (RT) and Non-Real Time (NRT) multimedia content demand on mobile devices are increasing at a high pace. Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) is expected to cater these demands. However, LTE-A operates at fixed spectrum which leads to spectrum scarcity. Cognitive Radio (CR) is one the promising technologies that is used to overcome spectrum scarcity and implementation of CR into LTE-A will improve spectrum availability and efficiency of the network. Furthermore, with addition of Packet Scheduling (PS) in the cognitive LTE-A, QoS requirement of the mobile users can be guaranteed. However, the study on the stated is very limited. Thus, this paper models, simulates and evaluates performance of five well-known PS algorithms for supporting the RT and NRT multimedia contents. The simulation results show that Maximum- Largest Weighted Delay First (M-LWDF) is the best candidate for implementation in the cognitive LTE-A.

Abstract

In the medical field, electrodes are commonly used either to retrieve signals or to conduct current. Most of the off-the-shelf surface electrodes are made from metal or rigid substrates. This paper presents a work on designing a new flexible dry electrodes using poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate and silver by means of dispenser printing technology. The polyester cotton fabric was selected as the substrate in this electrode designed. To analyse the new proposed composites of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate and silver, different mixtures have been applied.  Results from the experiment show that the conductivity of the proposed flexible electrode is comparable with the commercialized pre-gelled electrode when applied to an electrical stimulator device. Eight out of ten subjects under test described no difference in comfort between the proposed electrodes and pre-gelled electrodes.
