Abstract

The purpose of the quantitative study with a factorial experimental approach was to examine the significant increase and difference of students’ achievement in reading literacy and vocabulary mastery after being  taught through the SQ3R with authentic texts and simplified texts at one English Study Program Public University in Jambi, Indonesia. The sample of this study was 56 six semester student teachers at one public university in Jambi. To collect the data, pre-test and post-test techniques were used. The result of paired sample t-test showed that there was a significant progress in students’ achievement of reading literacy and vocabulary mastery of both experimental groups. Moreover, the result of independent sample t-test analysis showed that there was no significant difference in students’ achievement of reading literacy and vocabulary mastery between both experimental groups as well as level of achievement. The factorial analysis showed that there was an interaction between the kind of texts and students’ level of achievement both high and low achievers.  Implications of findings and suggestions are discussed

Abstract

AbstractIt is universally believed that learning a foreign language has its own difficulties. This paper discusses some problems which are faced by English as a Foreign Language students in learning English. Those problems can come from the students themselves and it can also come from their environment that have strong influence their success in learning a foreign language, in this case English. Moreover, how students’ local language influence them in learning English and how to overcome such an obstruction are also discussed here.Keyword : local languages, English, and foreign language learning AbstrakSecara universal diyakini bahwa mempelajari bahasa asing memiliki kesulitan tersendiri. Makalah ini membahas beberapa masalah yang dihadapi oleh Inggris sebagai siswa Bahasa Asing dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Masalah-masalah itu bisa berasal dari para siswa itu sendiri dan itu juga bisa berasal dari lingkungan mereka yang memiliki pengaruh kuat terhadap keberhasilan mereka dalam mempelajari bahasa asing, dalam hal ini bahasa Inggris. Selain itu, bagaimana bahasa lokal siswa mempengaruhi mereka dalam belajar bahasa Inggris dan cara mengatasi hambatan semacam itu juga dibahas di sini.Kata kunci : bahasa lokal, bahasa Inggris, dan pembelajaran bahasa asing

Abstract

In teaching English as a foreign language, teachers frequently use authentic materials to teach their students in the classroom. Both in four language skills namely reading, listening, speaking, and writing and language components like grammar and vocabulary. In addition, these kinds of materials have greater influence to enhance students’ foreign language ability because they are introduced directly to the materials which use English as the introductory language.   This paper discusses what is meant by authentic text, kinds of authentic materials, why it is important to use this material, the strengths and weaknesses of using this material in teaching reading to EFL students in relation to the enhancement of students’ reading proficiency. Key words : authentic materials, reading proficiency, EFL students
