Abstract

Although many scholars have conducted studies on the motivation of learning, little scholarly work reports the motives of lecturers learning English; the participants of previous studies are predominantly students. Further, a majority of those previous studies have been conducted using exclusively quantitative methods. To address these empirical and methodological gaps, the current research employed a qualitative descriptive case study method to examine the Indonesian lecturer motivation for learning English. This study utilised in-depth interviews to gather information from participants. The thematic analysis of the semi-structured interviews presented that the lecturers’ motivation for learning English were engaging in international scientific meetings, teaching, writing a research article, reading literature, and preparing a doctoral program. The findings revealed that instrumental motivation dominated Indonesian lecturers to improve their English. The implication of this study is that any language learners adopt or adapt the motivations from the participants of this study and succeed in learning English.

To fill this gap, the present study investigates these two aspects of cohesion in a legendary short story entitled “After Twenty Years.” Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) theoretical framework of cohesion was used to guide the current study. We applied textual analysis as the appropriate approach to find out grammatical and lexical cohesion within the forms of text. The findings in the grammatical cohesions showed that reference had the highest frequency of the total cohesive devices. Also, under grammatical cohesion, conjunctions are found to exist. However, other aspects were not found within this short story, including substitution and ellipsis. On the other hand, repetition was dominantly used lexically among other aspects of lexical cohesion and sequentially followed by repetitions, hyponyms, synonyms, and antonyms. Only one aspect of lexical cohesion, the meronym, was not found.  The overall results of the research indicated that the short story was a coherent discourse because both grammatical and lexical cohesion exist properly.

Abstract

Although many scholars have conducted studies on Language Learning Strategies (LLS) around the world, this issue is still new in the context of English for Medical Purposes (EMP), especially as used by Indonesian pharmacy students. Further, a majority of those previous studies have been conducted using exclusively quantitative research. In response to these empirical and methodological gaps, the current research adopts a qualitative case study to examine the LLS used by Indonesian pharmacy students, as guided by Oxford’s (1990) LLS theory. This study utilized in-depth interviews to gather information from participants. The thematic analysis of the semi-structured interviews presented five major strategies used by learners: engaging in social interaction, enriching their vocabulary, using web based language learning, practicing through online platforms, and employing fun learning. Findings demonstrate that most of their learning strategies involve employing online platforms.

Abstract

Despite the existence of many studies on the analysis of grammatical errors in writing, little scholarly work reports the errors in academic articles, especially in medical journals. To fill this empirical gap, the present study investigates grammatical errors within written English abstracts of academic articles from a nursing journal in Indonesia. In particular, it attempts to classify the errors based on a surface strategy taxonomy proposed by Dulay et al. (1982), namely misformation, omission, addition, and misordering. The method used is content analysis. The results of this study indicate that errors were found from all four classification categories. Further, we noted that the most commonly found errors were in the category of misformation followed by omission, addition, and misordering. The findings of this research are expected to serve as a reference for future scholars when avoiding errors in writing English abstracts for academic articles.

Abstract

Within the context of Indonesian higher education, the assessment focuses on the three domains of students’ competencies, namely knowledge, skills, and attitude. Therefore, this study aims to explore the assessment practice of EFL lecturers, especially the methods used in assessing the three students’ competencies. It also explores the general assessment practice and examines differences by educational degree and length of teaching experience. This quantitative study relies on survey data from 71 participants joining the EFL lecturers’ association in Indonesia. Furthermore, the convenient sampling technique was used to determine the sample, and the data were analyzed using SPSS version 24. The results showed that the lecturers employed various methods in assessing the three domains of students’ competencies. It was also found that the lecturers mostly employed observation (66.2%) for assessing attitudes domain, tests (33.8%) for assessing knowledge, and work performance (29.6%) for skills. The findings demonstrated that the lecturers have followed the assessment policy of the government related to the method, purpose, instrumentation, procedure, and reporting grade. The results also showed no differences in the assessment practice between lecturers with Master and Doctoral degrees. Additionally, there was no difference among the four categories of teaching experiences in the assessment practice. These findings are expected to become a reference for lecturers and curriculum development in conducting and designing appropriate assessments to guarantee teaching and learning quality.
