Abstract

The Steam-Hydro Distillation (SHD) is a commonly used method of the citronella oil processing industry. However, the yield and quality of the oil produced tends to be inconsistent, and energy consumption is quite high. The process intensification in the distillation of citronella oil using ultrasonic waves is expected to be able to increase the yield and quality of the oil produced and reduce energy requirements. This research was conducted to examine the effect of sonication operating conditions on the Ultrasonic following Steam-Hydro Distillation (US-SHD) on the yield and quality of citronella oil. In addition, a comparative analysis of the yield and quality (density) of oil between the US-SHD and the SHD was also carried out in this study. Extraction of citronella oil with the US-SHD was sonicated for 5, 10, 15 and 20 minutes and used a power of 180 and 360 watts and continued with distillation for 60 minutes which also applies to the SHD. In the US-SHD, the highest yield of citronella oil was obtained during sonication for 20 minutes with 360 watts of power, which is 1,13%. Whereas in the SHD, the yield obtained is only 0,85%. The results of this study also showed that with a slight increase in energy consumption due to ultrasonic wave induction (2,15%), it was able to produce a substantial increase in citronella oil yield (31,83%) but did not significantly influence its density.Keywords : citronella oil, process intensification,ultrasonic following steam-hydro distillation, sonicationABSTRAKPada industri pengolahan minyak serai wangi, metode penyulingan kukus (Steam-Hydro Distillation atau SHD) merupakan metode yang umum digunakan. Namun, kualitas dan kuantitas minyak yang dihasilkan cenderung tidak konsisten, serta tingkat konsumsi energi yang cukup besar. Intensifikasi proses pada penyulingan minyak serai wangi dengan menggunakan gelombang ultrasonik diharapkan mampu meningkatkan kuantitas maupun kualitas minyak yang dihasilkan serta mengurangi kebutuhan energi.Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengkaji pengaruh kondisi operasi sonikasi pada metode Ultrasonic following Steam-HydroDistillation (US-SHD) terhadap rendemen dan kualitas minyak serai wangi. Penyulingan minyak serai wangi dengan metode US-SHD dilakukan melalui tahap sonikasi selama 5, 10, 15 dan 20 menit dan menggunakan daya sebesar 180 dan 360 watt serta dilanjutkan tahap penyulingan selama 60 menit. Pada penyulingan metode US-SHD, rendemen minyak serai wangi tertinggi diperoleh pada saat sonikasi selama 20 menit dengan daya 360 watt, yakni sebesar 1,13%. Sedangkan pada metode SHD, rendemen yang diperoleh hanya mencapai 0,85%. Hasil penelitian ini juga menunjukkan bahwa dengan sedikit peningkatan konsumsi energi dikarenakan induksi gelombang ultrasonik (13,92%), mampu menghasilkan peningkatan rendemen minyak serai wangi yang substansial (31,83%) namun tidak berpengaruh signifikan terhadap densitasnya.  Kata kunci :  minyak serai wangi, intensifikasi proses, ultrasonic following steam-hydro distillation, sonikasi

Abstract

Nowadays, recycling Li-ion batteries is an important thing to do to minimize the risk of exposure to this hazardous solid waste. On the other hand, extracting these materials can optimize the economic potential of valuable minerals in the active cathode. Bioleaching was developed as an environmentally friendly method to extract cobalt from the cathode by utilizing the metabolic activity of A. ferrooxidants cells. Microorganisms were isolated from Acid Mine Drainage in a 9K liquid medium at pH=2.5 and used as an inoculum. The Bioleaching process was carried out with various cell concentrations of 5, 10, and 20 %v/v. A positive response was shown by monitoring the microorganism activity through changes in physical appearance, decreasing the pH value, and increasing the Fe3+ concentration. The structural analysis of cathode by XRD and SEM has shown the effect of Co dissolution before and after bioleaching. Optimum recovery of cobalt was achieved up to 57.81% after 14 days of incubation.

Abstract

Students' interest in learning may be enhanced through an attractive learning design. An attractive learning design can improve the quality of student understanding, where improvement can be assessed from the effectiveness of learning. Aspects that can affect the effectiveness of learning are learning curriculum, facilities, and teacher quality. Of the three aspects, the aspect of facilities is often a problem in schools. One example of limited school facilities is the inadequacy of the Natural Sciences Laboratory. Public Junior High School (SMPN) 17 Balikpapan is one of the schools which is constrained in the aspect of facilities where it only has one Science Laboratory so that the practicum is only carried out occasionally. Therefore, community service is carried out at SMPN 17 Balikpapan through the "Introduction to simple applied science to increase interest in science" program in which it is hoped that students' knowledge and interest in science will increase. To increase the knowledge and interest of students in science, a simple hands-on module is implemented. Before doing practicum, students are first given science material in the form of basic theory related to the experiment to be carried out. Evaluation of the activity was carried out by conducting a post-test on students in the class that was the target of the program (VII G) and the comparison class (VII A). The evaluation results showed that class VII G got a higher average score than class VII A, but class VII A got a score ≥ 75 which had a higher percentage. Field findings show that the addition of practical modules in learning methods has a positive impact on students' learning motivation. This simply did not have a significant impact on the team's expected achievement objectives, with only 6.9% achieving a score of 75.
