Abstract

The purpose of this study is (1) to determine the interest and motivation of lecturer in State Polytechnic of Balikpapan to English; (2) to determine the relationship between interest and motivation toward their result in English learning activity. There are two data that used in this research, the first data is taken from the result of English learning activity, and the second data is taken from questionnaires which given to the 20 respondent. Distribution of questionnaires is given to the lecturer in State Polytechnic of Balikpapan. The questionnaires consist of several questions that can determine the interest and motivation to learn or involve in English learning activity. And the data from English learning activities is used to analyze whether there is any relationship between them. The analysis of data is given through the descriptive method. The results showed that (1) There is an interest of the lecturer in State Polytechnic of Balikpapan to follow the English training, it shows with the frequency of “always” in 94 frequency as the biggest one than other, but also there are a few of them has no interest to follow that training. (2) There is a motivation of the lecturer in State Polytechnic of Balikpapan to learn English but they have difficulties to understand the materials. (3) There is a well-motivated with Low-achievement Category for the lecturer of State Polytechnic of Balikpapan, means that their lower comprehend ability and score are not caused of their lower interest, but it caused of their former skill is not good enough.

Abstract

English language proficiency is generally measured by English competency scores such as TOEFL and TOEIC. To be able to apply the right learning patterns for students of Politeknik Negeri Balikpapan (Poltekba) for the purpose of mastering the TOEIC, an analysis of their English proficiency is needed by measuring their TOEIC scores. This analysis can be used as a reference for English lecturers in providing relevant learning materials according to the needs of the students and the industrial world. The research method used is qualitative-quantitative because it focuses on analyzing the TOEIC scores of the students. The researchers conducted analysis on the TOEIC scores as the data and explained them descriptively. The data used in this analysis are TOEIC scores from 291 students. The scores were mapped into 6 levels of English proficiency. The results of this study describe the level of English proficiency and the comparison between mastering Listening and Reading Comprehensions by the students at Politeknik Negeri Balikpapan.

Abstract

The need for electrical energy is a basic requirement besides the need for food and clothing, electrical energy is absolutely needed by the community to support all their daily activities. The purpose of carrying out community service activities is to provide an alternative source of electrical energy by utilizing solar cell panels which can be felt by the public in the form of DC voltage and AC voltage through an inverter device. The method applied in this service activity is to set a plan in the form of a system work diagram and then carry out the service activities in accordance with the work plan that was made previously. The results obtained are the availability of lighting facilities and electrical energy to start the pump so that it can meet the lighting needs and water needs of the orphanage.

Abstract

Figurative language is a way to engage readers and deliver them through writing in a more creative form. The two categories of figurative languages that are most widely known are similes and metaphors. The purpose of this study was to analyze the use of similes and metaphors contained in a literary work in the form of a novel entitled "hard times". The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative by describing the results of the analysis in the form of data which has taken from one section or chapter found in the novel by Charles Dickens, which consists of 10 pages. The results of this study are the use of similes is more emphasized on the use of "as" than the use of "like". the use of similes "as" and "like" in the novel are used as a form of figurative speech which is made as a comparison between two objects of various types. Using similes in the novel can give a better sense and convey it to the reader. Whereas for metaphors there are only found five sentences because in this writing use more direct speech or direct quotations to emphasize the function of metaphor to live the story in Novel

Abstract

With the number of online transportation companies, there will be competition to attract consumer interest. Each company has its own way of introducing the products or services that they offer, from designing a logo that is used as a brand for the company until the features that can attract consumer interest. The use of Logo as a brand of the company is a point of identification; and symbols that customers use to identify their brand. Ideally, each company creates the logo so that it can directly connect consumers with the company. The purpose of this research is to dig out what is the meaning of logo or symbol of online transportation providers as the company's identity based on the colors and fonts used. Through a qualitative approach, data is obtained from a sample of logos issued officially from the largest online transportation service company in Indonesia, there are Gojek, Uber, Grab, and Maxim. The findings of this research is the Logo’s meaning of each online transportation providers represent their character based on font and color use. Most of them used wordmarks as the character and identity to be easily recognized by the public, and to convey brand attributes and brand positioning. The color that mostly used by the online transportation company is green and black as the dominant color as a symbol of their existence for tired people, means that they can be the solution for their movement, and also immovable, means that they are strong and undefeated. While font use by those company are sans serif and Egyptian, if we compare between the use of color and font, they have same purposes which shown as a symbol of strong and efficient.

Abstract

Electrical energy is a primary need in modern human life. However, with the increase in fuel prices, the right technology is needed to overcome it, in the form of battery and inverter innovations which are combined to produce an output of 220 volts ac which has the same capacity as PLN electricity. This PkM DPRM activity was held in Manggar Village for 3 days, namely @ u on July 30, August 3 and August 4, 2020 which was attended by fishermen, fried food traders and Manggar Village employees themselves. The equipment is designed with a capacity of 300 watts and 1000 watts, tailored to the needs of the residents. The benefit greatly eases the use of diesel generator sets for fishermen, which from Rp. 108,000 / month, has now become Rp. 0, -. Likewise for fried food traders, who originally paid Rp. 70,000 / month for electricity for lighting at night, now it is Rp. 0, -. Based on the results of the questionnaire, participants are very grateful for the presence of this technology in their village. At least the motivation for other residents to implement these tools in everyday life. Keywords: power plants without fuel, save energy, fuel, lighting, manggar kelurahan

Abstract

Beberapa permasalahan yang terjadi dalam suatu kawasan adalah pencemaran limbah cair dimana faktor penyebabnya berasal dari sektor domestik. Salah satu bentuk pengendalian tersebut dibangunnya instalasi pengolahan limbah, sehingga penelitian ini bertujuan membuat permodelan alat filtrasi portabel pengolahan limbah cair (grey water) yang mudah pengoperasian dan perawatan, mengetahui kapasitas alat filtrasi portabel dalam pengolahan limbah cair, dan mengevaluasi hasil pengolahan kualitas limbah cair setelah melewati alat filtrasi portabel. Pada rancangan pembuatan media alat filtrasi, terdapat 5 media filter yang terdapat dalam model alat. Sistem filtrasi yang dilakukan dengan prinsip arah vertikal, dimana aliran limbah yang masuk akan terus maju ke dalam media yang telah terdapat dalam alat. Kapasitas kemampuan alat filtrasi portabel dalam melakukan pengolahan limbah cair mencapai waktu konstan pada menit ke 55 dengan besar debit limpasan 0,000031 m3/detik. Hasil kualitas limbah sebelum masuk sistem filtrasi mempunyai tingkat kadar pencemaran cukup tinggi yakni BOD: 525 mg/L, COD: 1350 mg/L, TSS: 0 mg/L, minyak dan lemak: 0 mg/L, sulfat: 237,3 mg/L. Setelah pengolahan tingkat kadar pencemaran limbah menjadi menurun dengan hasil BOD: 119 mg/L, COD: 273 mg/L, TSS: 0 mg/L, minyak dan lemak: 0 mg/L, sulfat: 163,2 mg/L. Besar persentase penurunan tingkat pencemaran untuk BOD: 77,33%, COD: 79,78%, dan sulfat: 31,23%.
