Abstract

This research employs a Functional Grammar Approach (FGA) and used the method of descriptive which employs clause. This study is qualitative because it focuses on the meanings, concepts, definitions, and descriptions of things. The source data that used in this research is based from the articles which found in jakarta Post.This research focused on how the participant roles for material processes which is classified into several participants, there are: (1) Affected is the participant that someone or something happens to; (2) Recipient is the participant which indicates by indirect object in ditransitive clauses but takes the preposition  to rather than for when the indirect object moved to the final; (3) Beneficiary is the participants which also indicates by indirect object in ditransitve clause but takes the preposition  for rather than to when the indirect object moved to the final.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is (1) to determine the interest and motivation of lecturer in State Polytechnic of Balikpapan to English; (2) to determine the relationship between interest and motivation toward their result in English learning activity. There are two data that used in this research, the first data is taken from the result of English learning activity, and the second data is taken from questionnaires which given to the 20 respondent. Distribution of questionnaires is given to the lecturer in State Polytechnic of Balikpapan. The questionnaires consist of several questions that can determine the interest and motivation to learn or involve in English learning activity. And the data from English learning activities is used to analyze whether there is any relationship between them. The analysis of data is given through the descriptive method. The results showed that (1) There is an interest of the lecturer in State Polytechnic of Balikpapan to follow the English training, it shows with the frequency of “always” in 94 frequency as the biggest one than other, but also there are a few of them has no interest to follow that training. (2) There is a motivation of the lecturer in State Polytechnic of Balikpapan to learn English but they have difficulties to understand the materials. (3) There is a well-motivated with Low-achievement Category for the lecturer of State Polytechnic of Balikpapan, means that their lower comprehend ability and score are not caused of their lower interest, but it caused of their former skill is not good enough.

Abstract

Abstract        The purposes of this study were (1) to know the structures of procedure text written by the third semester students of Culinary Department in the State Polytechnic of Balikpapan, (2) to know the students’ development in writing the procedure text assessed through portfolio. The design of this study was a descriptive of qualitative design. The researcher involved 15 students from 28 Diploma Students of the third semester of Culinary Department of the State Polytechnic of Balikpapan in order to get their data or documents of procedure text writing results. The source data were taken from the writing results based on four topics given. The findings of this study showed that (1) there were four structures of procedure text written by the students, they were goal, ingredients/ materials, steps/ procedures, and evaluation, (2) there were any changes of the students’ writing product after assessing through portfolio assessment developmentally. It can be compared from the students’ writing between the first draft and the final draft for each topic given in which the aspects of writing process, organizational features, language features and clarity of writing found in the final draft have been stated and described effectively and meaningfully than the first draft written by the students. From the findings above, it can be implied that using portfolio assessment gave better result on the students’ ability in writing the procedure text.Keywords: Writing, Procedure Text, PortfolioAbstrak       Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah (1) untuk mengetahui struktur prosedur teks yang ditulis oleh mahasiswa semester ketiga Departemen Kuliner di Politeknik Negeri Balikpapan, (2) untuk mengetahui perkembangan mahasiswa dalam menulis teks prosedur yang dinilai melalui portofolio. Desain penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Peneliti melibatkan 15 mahasiswa dari 28 mahasiswa Diploma semester ketiga Program Studi Tata Boga di Politeknik Negeri Balikpapan untuk mendapatkan data atau dokumen dari hasil menulis teks prosedur mereka. Sumber data diambil dari hasil tulisan berdasarkan empat topik yang diberikan. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa (1) ada empat struktur prosedur teks yang ditulis oleh para mahasiswa, yaitu tujuan, bahan / material, langkah / prosedur, dan evaluasi, (2) ada perubahan dari produk menulis mahasiswa setelah menilai melalui penilaian portofolio perkembangan. Hal ini dapat dibandingkan dari menulis mahasiswa antara draft pertama dan draft akhir untuk setiap topik yang diberikan di mana aspek proses penulisan, fitur organisasi, fitur bahasa dan kejelasan tulisan yang ditemukan dalam draft akhir ini telah dinyatakan dan diuraikan secara efektif dan bermakna dari draft pertama ditulis oleh mahasiswa. Dari temuan di atas, dapat tersirat bahwa menggunakan penilaian portofolio memberi hasil yang lebih baik pada kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks prosedur. Abstract

Abstract This research is aimed at finding out whether: (1) Buzz Groups Method is more effective than Direct Instruction Method to teach reading comprehension at mechanical engineering department students of Balikpapan State Polytechnic; (2) the students who have high motivation have better reading comprehension than those who have low motivation at mechanical engineering department of Balikpapan State Polytechnic; and (3) there is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ learning motivation for teaching reading comprehension at mechanical engineering department of Balikpapan State Polytechnic. The method which was applied in this research was experimental study. It was conducted at Balikpapan State Polytechnic. The population of the research is the mechanical engineering department student in Balikpapan State Polytechnic. The samples were two classes. Each class was divided into two groups (the students who have high and low motivation). The data analysis shows the following findings: (1) Buzz Groups Method is more effective than Direct Instruction Method to teach reading comprehension to the mechanical engineering department students; (2) The students having high motivation have better reading comprehension than those having low–one; and (3) There is an interaction between the teaching methods and students’ learning motivation for teaching reading comprehension. It means that the effectiveness of the teaching methods depends on the degree of the students’ learning motivation to the mechanical engineering department students. Abstract

Tujuan Penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui gambaran umum pengembangan kurikulum Politeknik Negeri Balikpapan yang disesuaikan dengan tantangan industri 4.0. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif yang disajikan dalam bentuk deskriptif. Pengumpulan daa dilakukan melalui observasi, wawancara, dan FGD. Data yang diperoleh selanjutnya diolah menjadi kalimat-kalimat yang bermakna dan dianalisa secara kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan, revitalisasi kurikulum perlu dilakukan meningkatkan kemampuan kebekerjaan dalam upaya menjawab ragam tantangan industry 4.0, penyelarasan kurikulum sangat penting dilakukan dalam upaya mengiramakan kompetensi yang diajarkan di POLTEKBA dengan kompetensi yang dibutuhkan pengguna lulusan, orientasi pengembangan kurikulum POLTEKBA memuat konsep literasi baru (digital, teknologi, manusia). Kesimpulan, keterlibatan industry merupakan kunci keberhasilan dalam mengembangkan kurikulum dengan harapan kelak pada gilirannya dapat menghasilkan lulusan yang sesuai standar pengguna lulusan yang mampu bergerak lincah, adaptif, dan sensitif terhadap perubahan lingkungan industri dan ekonomi.

Abstract

Bagian reading comprehension menjadi bagian tersulit pada TOEFL berdasarkan hasil pengamatan peneliti . Meskipun sudah diberikan strategi – strategi pada reading comprehension, namun masih banyak mahasiswa yang merasa kesulitan ketika menyelesaikan soal tersebut. Salah satu penyebab faktor eksternal rendahnya keterampilan reading comprehension mahasiswa yakni dapat dipengaruhi oleh model pembelajaran di kelas dan  motivasi belajar siswa sebagai faktor internal.Penelitian ini menggunaan penelitian eksperimental semu untuk mengetahui perbedaan dan efek dari model pembelajaran langsung (Direct Instruction) dan model pembelajaran kooperatif Roundtable. Data dalam penelitian ini dianalisis menggunakan uji statistik ANOVA dua jalur dan uji Tukey sebagai uji lanjutan. Hasil analisa menunjukan bahwa  model pembelajaran Kooperatif Roundtable signifikan berbeda dengan model pembelajaran langsung . Kemampuan reading comprehension mahasiswa yang memiliki motivasi belajar tinggi signifikan berbeda dengan yang memiliki motivasi belajar rendah. Model pembelajaran kooperatif Roundtable  lebih efektif diterapkan bagi mahasiswa yang memiliki motivasi belajar tinggi  sedangkan model pembelajaran langsung ( Direct Instruction )  lebih efektif diterapkan bagi mahasiswa yang memiliki motivasi belajar rendah. Oleh karena itu, dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat  interaksi antara model pembelajaran dan motivasi belajar siswa untuk mengajar reading comprehension pada TOEFL.  Keefektifan model pembelajaran tergantung pada tingkat motivasi belajar siswa. Kata kunci : model pembelajaran , pemahaman mambaca, motivasi belajar

Abstract

The higher vocational education must be oriented with bussines world and insdustry’s need. The aim of this research is to identify the relevance of Balikpapan State Polytechnic graduates to the main competence of bussines world and insdustry. This study focussed with the relevance beetwen the result of tracer study and user survey  to stakeholder. The subject of this research is Balikpapan State Polytechnic graduates. The sampling methode use snowball sampling. The technique of collecting data used questionare and dokumentation, however techniques for analizing data used descriptive analisyst. Based on the result of tracer study , it can be concluded that the graduates comptenece profile  have close horizontal relevance ( the relevance between graduate competence and field work) and for vertical relevance ( the relevance beetwen level education and the qualification eduactaion of the job) is high enough. However, based on the result of user survey, it was found mismatch between Balikpapan State Polytechnic graduates that was not suitable with the stakeholder’s need in both aspect either hard skill that consist of : the field of scince, foerign language ability,and the ability of  information technology, while for soft skill comptenece that consists of communication skill, team work, dan self development.Therefore, Balikpapan State Polytecnich institusion need to improve the conptenece of gradutaes either hard skill or soft skill based on the staholders’ need.Keywords:  Relevance, Competence, Graduates, Tracer Study, User Survey, Business World and IndustryAbstrakPendidikan tinggi vokasi harus berorientasi pada kompetensi yang dibutuhkan oleh dunia usaha dan industri (DUDI). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji tingkat relevansi (kesesuaian) lulusan Poltekba terhadap model kompetensi yang dibutuhkan oleh DUDI. Kajian diarahkan pada keselarasan antara hasil tracer study dan user survey terhadap DUDI pengguna lulusan Poltekba. Penelitian ini mengambil subjek alumni Poltekba. Teknik sampling yang digunakan adalah snowball sampling. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan kuesioner dan dokumentasi sedangkan teknik analisis data menggunakan analisis deskriptif. Berdasarkan hasil tracer study dapat disimpulkan bahwa profil kompetensi lulusan memiliki   tingkat keselarasan horizontal (keselarasaan bidang pekerjaan alumni dengan bidang ilmu) yang erat dan tingkat keselarasan vertikal (keselarasan antara jenjang pendidikan dengan jenjang kualifikasi pekerjaan) yang cukup tinggi. Akan tetapi berdasarkan hasil user survey ditemukan mismatch antara kompetensi lulusan Poltekba yang belum sesuai dengan model kompetensi utama yang dibutuhkan DUDI yakni dalam aspek   hardskill yang meliputi keahlian pada bidang ilmu, kemampuan berbahasa asing, dan penggunaan teknologi informasi, sedangkan kemampuan soft skill yang meliputi kemampuan berkomunikasi, kerjasama, dan pengembangan diri. Oleha karena itu institusi Poltekba perlu melakukan peningkatan kualitas kompetensi lulusan baik hard skill maupun soft skill seusai dengan kebutuhan DUDI.Kata kunci: Relevansi, Kompetensi, Lulusan, Tracer Study, User Survey, DUDI.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to know whether there is any significant difference in students’ writing achievement in Balikpapan State Polytechnic between the students who taught using inductive method and those taught using deductive method and to know which group has higher achievement, the group taught using inductive method or the one taught using deductive method. The research methodology used experimental method. The population of this research is the third semester students of mechanical engineering in Balikpapan State Polytechnic. The sampling technique used cluster random sampling and in collecting the data used a test. In analyzing the data used t-test formula. The result of the research shows that there is a significant difference in the achievement of students’ writing skill between the students taught using inductive method and those taught using deductive method. The mean of the experimental group taught using inductive method is 83 while the mean of the control group taught using deductive method is 70. It shows that the mean score of experimental group is higher than the control group. Therefore, it can be concluded that the students taught using inductive method have higher achievement than those taught using deductive. Key word: comparative, deductive method , inductive method, teaching writing

Abstract

ABSTRAKHadirnya revolusi industri 4.0 telah menggeser beberapa aktifitas manusia, otomasi teknologi hampir di semua bidang pekerjaan berdampak pada keterampilan yang dibutuhkan industri. Politeknik sebagai pendidikan vokasi perlu menyiapkan langkah strategis untuk menyiapkan lulusannya agar mampu menghadapi tantangan pada era tersebut. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengkaji revitalisasi Politeknik Negeri Balikpapan di era industri 4.0.  Metode pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini melalui observasi, wawancara, dan fokus grup diskusi (FGD). Data yang diperoleh dianalisis secara deskriptif kualitatif. Berdasarkan analisis yang dilakukan dapat simpulkan terdapat 7 indikator revitalisasi Politeknik untuk menjawab tantangan revolusi industri 4.0 yaitu (1) Relevansi kurikulum, (2)  Dual system 3-2-1, (3) Penyiapan dosen industry, (4) Teaching factory, (5) Sertifikasi dosen dan retooling, (5) TUK dan LSP, dan (7) Sertifikasi lulusan.  Revitalisasi Politeknik Negeri Balikpapan perlu dilakukan dengan harapan kelak pada gilirannya dapat menghasilkan lulusan yang siap menghadapi dan memiliki peluang memenangkan tantangan kehidupan yang semakin kompleks di abad 21 hususnya untuk menghadapi gempuran revolusi industry 4.0.                                                                                                                 Kata Kunci: dual system, industri 4.0, pendidikan vokasi,revitalisasi politeknik, teaching factory. ABSTRACTThe industrial revolution 4.0 has shifted some human activities, technology automation in almost of all work fields that has impacts with the skills which are needed by industry. Polytechnic as higher vocational education needs to prepare strategic steps  in creating creditabel graduates in order to  face the challenges in that era. The aims of this study is to examine the revitalization of Balikpapan State Polytechnic in industrial era 4.0. The collecting the data  were done through observation, interviews, and focus group discussions (FGD). The data obtained were analyzed with descriptively qualitative. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that there are 7 indicators of Polytechnic revitalization to answer the challenges of the industrial revolution 4.0, such as : (1) Relevance of  curriculum, (2) Dual system 3-2-1, (3) Preparation of industrial lecturers, (4) Teaching factory, (5) Lecturer certification and retooling, (6) TUK and LSP, and (7) Graduate certification. The revitalization of Balikpapan State Polytechnic  needs to be done and hopefully it will  create graduates who are ready to face and have the opportunity to win  the complex life challenges in the 21st century  especially in industrial revolution 4.0.                                                                                                 Keywords: Dual System, Higher Vocational Education, Industry 4.0, Revitalization of Polytechnic, Teaching factory.

Abstract

Abstract The problem that occurs with the partners of this service activity is the lack of confidence from the Balikpapan Environmental Ambassadors. This is based on the limited knowledge about the concept of the environment in the city of Balikpapan. The need for personal branding training activities that are supported by qualified public speaking skills for the Balikpapan Environmental Ambassador forum as a debriefing before they enter the community to socialize the concept of the environment in Balikpapan City. Based on these problems, the solution offered in the implementation of this service activity is to provide personal branding training for the Balikpapan Environmental Ambassador Forum in disseminating environmental concepts in the city of Balikpapan. Materials that will be presented to the Balikpapan Environmental Ambassador Forum include strengthening personal branding supported by qualified public speaking skills and materials on Health, Safety, Work and Environment (K3LH). With the training, it is hoped that it can help the Balikpapan Environmental Ambassador Forum in strengthening personal branding which is supported by qualified public speaking skills in disseminating environmental concepts to the public Abstrak Masalah yang terjadi pada mitra kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah kurangnya kepercayaan diri dari para Duta Lingkungan Hidup Balikpapan. Hal ini didasari oleh keterbatasan pengetahuan tentang konsep lingkungan hidup yang ada di Kota Balikpapan. Perlunya kegiatan pelatihan personal branding yang didukung dengan kemampuan public speaking yang mumpuni bagi forum Duta Lingkungan Hidup Balikpapan sebagai pembekalan sebelum mereka terjun ke masyarakat untuk melakukan sosialisasi mengenai konsep lingkungan hidup di Kota Balikpapan. Berdasarkan permasalahan tersebut maka solusi yang ditawarkan pada pelaksanaan kegiatan Pengabdian ini yaitu dengan memberikan pelatihan personal branding bagi Forum Duta Lingkungan Hidup Balikpapan dalam mensosialisasikan konsep lingkungan hidup di Kota Balikpapan. Materi yang akan disampaikan kepada Forum Duta Lingkungan Hidup Balikpapan meliputi penguatan personal branding yang didukung dengan kemampuan public speaking yang mumpuni dan materi tentang Kesehatan, Keselamatan, Kerja dan Lingkungan Hidup (K3LH). Dengan adanya pelatihan diharapkan dapat membantu para Forum Duta Lingkungan Hidup Balikpapan dalam penguatan personal branding yang didukung dengan kemampuan public speaking yang mumpuni dalam mensosialisasi konsep lingkungan hidup kepada masyarakat
