Abstract

Humor adalah fenomena aneh dan penuh paradoks: sesuatu yang sebenarnya tidak serius -bahkan pernah dianggap jahat – namun di sisi lain ternyata juga dianggap sangat penting. Plato sempat menganggap humor dan tertawa sebagai kejahatan, sejajar dengan penghinaan. Kaum Stoa, biarawan-biarawan Kristiani purba, hingga beberapa filsuf abad 17, melihat tertawa sebagai kekurangan pengendalian diri. Psikoanalisis Freudian menganggap humor sebagai bentuk terselubung kedengkian dan naluri liar libido. Namun kini orang cenderung melihat sebaliknya: kini humor dilihat justru sebagai kecerdasan kritis, secara psikologis mencerminkan fleksibilitas mental, secara fisik menurunkan tegangan dan memacu imunitas, secara sosial merupakan lubrikan yang memperlancar hubungan interpersonal.  Sempat pula ada anggapan bahwa humor merupakan indikator adanya ketertekanan masif. Sementara di sisi lain konon humor juga menunjukkan kematangan psikologis dan religius.   Extension Course Filsafat kali ini bermaksud hendak memahami kompleksitas dari gejala yang disebut ‘humor’ itu, dengan mencoba melihatnya dari bermacam perspektif, antara lain : dari sudut filsafat, neuroscience, psikologi, bahasa, budaya, agama, dll.

Abstract

The sustained rise of religious populism across the globe has influenced Indonesian political situation. In Indonesia, the last ten years have witnessed the increasingly widespread emergence of religious populism. Populists express strong moral judgments in decrying corruption, moral decadence and corrupted elite in power. They define society in Manichean terms as divided into a good ‘us’ and an evil ‘them’. In defining both of these categories, they put forward the important role of religious identities in order to classify who fits into the category of ‘us’ and who belongs to ‘them’. Hannah Arendt offers sharp analyses allowing to uncover religious populism mechanism. Her main analysis was based on the pathology of tribal nationalism. The result of her analysis helps us to  explore the similarities of tribal nationalism pathology and religious populism phenomena. The use of comparative and critical approaches helps to conclude that the pathology of tribal nationalism gives lessons on how such a movement cannot accept differences and tends to be totalitarian. Such a comparison opens new perspectives on helping to examine the phenomena of propaganda, slandering, intimidation, mass mobilization, persecution, violence, and formations of paramilitary forces as  instruments for totalitary movements used by religious populism. Such phenomena are loaded with manipulations and lies which have fragmented social groups and weakened political culture so that ideological consensus is impossible. Ordinary citizens, even the intellectual, are not able to oppose well-organized lies and manipulations. The danger is that such religious populism maneuvres risk jeopardizing the foundation of the Indonesian nation, which is formulated under the motto “unity in diversity”.

The purpose of this exposition is to understand the quality of people participation as an indicator to measure the effectiveness of democracy. The article emphasizes strongly that effectiveness of democracy can be realized if democracy is oriented to solve the problem of injustice in society. People have real alternatives in both politics and economy in order to avoid being exploited and manipulated by political authorities and economic agents.

Abstract

Does Christian ethics propose an original moral which is different from other ethics? The golden rule could be the starting point of the search for the uniqueness of the christian ethics. Treat others as you would like them to treat you. So treat others as a goal and not as a means. This golden rule still supposes a reciprocal relationship. So it must be viewed in a new perspective which is of generosity. So the categorical imperative must be completed by love your enemies and do good, and lend without any hope of return (Luke 6:35). This completion characterizes the logic of generosity which can be claimed is the uniqueness of christian ethics because it transcends the mere logic of eciprocity of the golden rule. The logic of generosity purifies the christian ethics rom all kinds of interests and expectations. This radicality of following Jesus hrist answers the perplexity of Derrida putting into question of the existence of a sincere gift and pardon. Derridas deconstruction confirms mediately the niqueness of christian ethics. Christianism places ethics in a concrete community with all its organizations, traditions, rites, institutions, theologies and the individuals of its members.

Abstract

The focus of this paper is the convergence of Paul Ricouer’s and Emmanuel Levinas’ thoughts concerning the moral responsibility. The role of the mediation between subject and self-understanding would be an appropriate starting point to elaborate such an inquiry. The self-understanding which is one of the hermeneutical categories, according to Ricoeur, represents a decisive moment of the moral awareness. While in the Levinas’ perspective, the appearance of the face constitutes the birth of the moral awareness. Despite this convergence, there is a different approach between both philosophers. Ricoeur’s starting point is text and ego, while Levinas’ thought is based on the ‘other’. So there is a radical difference in the status of alterity which has an implication in the cognition and activity. Levinas refutes the ontology and emphasizes on ethics as experience. While Ricoeur aims at the conditions of possibility of an adequate interpretation which enables to better understand himself/ herself. The concept ‘better self-understanding’ integrates the epistemological and ontological dimensions.

Abstract

Media sosial sebagai bentuk platform web 2.0 mengalihkan penekanan konsumsi layanan internet menjadi berbasis interaktif dan kolaboratif, menciptakan bentuk interaksi antar individu, kelompok masyarakat, organisasi dan publik. Tidak hanya tokoh dan politisi dunia, selebriti juga ambil bagian dalam interaktifitas dalam media sosial. Media sosial telah menjadi arena sosial global yang menjadi tempat reproduksi budaya yang dilakukan terus menerus yang melibatkan individu dalam kelas-kelas sosial. Sebagai wahana kontestasi dibutuhkan keahlian, dan modal tertentu yang disebut oleh Bourdieu dengan istilah kapital. Makalah dengan metode studi pustaka ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana mobilisasi kapital yang dimiliki selebriti dalam media sosial sebagai ruang sosial yang dikenal dengan arena. Pentingnya kapital dalam sebuah arena menunjukkan bahwa media sosial bukanlah sekedar bentuk platform yang partisapatif, melainkan sebuah arena kontestasi sosial bagi individu didalamnya. Selebriti hadir ditengah publik lewat sosial media dengan kekuatan kapitalnya khususnya kapital simbolis yang didapatkan akibat akumulasi visibilitas media yang dihasilkan dari representasi media berulang kerap dikonversi menjadi kapital yang lain dalam banyak hal seperti marketing dan periklanan. Media sosial sebagai arena yang muncul dalam bentuk digital sebenarnya tidak berbeda dengan arena dalam bentuk fisik. Dalam arena terdapat usaha melakukan dominasi kelas sosial tertentu dengan memanfaatkan kapital yang dimiliki, termasuk oleh selebriti melalui distinction untuk memperlihatkan perbedaan kelas. Selain selebriti yang mendapatkan visibilitas dari media, di media sosial juga muncul fenomena micro celebrity. Komodifikasi selebriti menjadi produk pemasaran telah meningkatkan kemampuan kapital lainnya, khususnya kapital ekonomi melalui kehadiran follower. Dominasi kelas sosial selebriti terkadang tidak disadari oleh follower, dan hanya menguntungkan pada selebriti. Ketidaksadaran follower yang dibuktikan dengan tindakan mengkonsumsi produk milik selebriti agar merasa sejajar. Penciptaan selera yang sama hanyalah bentuk distinction lain yang dilakukan untuk melanggengkan kelas dominan selebriti melalui akumulasi kapital ekonomi.

Abstract

This research focuses on how to comprehend cultural study scientifically.  In elaborating cultural studies, the main problem lies on digesting reality, which will not be simple. In addition, a certain construct of cultural studies emerges as well as its models of elaboration.  By using Gilles-Gaston Granger framework, on the relationship between the object of the study and human comprehension three models of explanation are explained. Those models are energetics, cybernetics, and semantics. The first two models are closer to natural science. These models also tend to be reductive and deterministic. The last model tends to be closer to cultural studies because it touches the actions of human, which needs to be interpreted.
