Abstract

Background: Physical fitness is a degree of health status as a basic physical condition of someone to perform daily activity. Elementary school students should have a good physical fitness to obtain satisfactory academic achievement. The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between physical fitness and academic achievement. Methods: This study used an observational analytical method with cross-sectional design, conducted from September−October 2013, using total sampling method. There were 82 students of the 4th−6th- grade from Cikeruh 2 elementary school at Jatinangor. The school was chosen by random selection. The physical fitness assessment in this study consisted of step test to measure cardiorespiratory endurance, body mass index (BMI) for body composition, push-up for muscular strength and sit-up for muscular flexibility. Academic achievement was collected from the last examination result. Each component of physical fitness test results were converted to a score and then categorized. Results: Most students (74.4%) had fair physical fitness, boys 68.3%, and girls 80.5%. No correlation was found between physical fitness and academic achievement (p=0.432 and r=0.162).Conclusions: There is no significant correlation between physical fitness and academic achievement.

Abstract

Physical fitness is a measure of health status as a basic physical condition of someone to perform daily activity. In this study, measurement pf physical fitness component consisted of cardiorespiratory endurance, body composition, muscular flexibility, and muscular strength. The purpose of this study is to know whether there is correlation between physical fitness and academic achievement. This study used observational analytical method with cross-sectional design. Data were collected by total sampling method, and there were eighty-two students from Cikeruh 2 Elementary School in Jatinangor from 4th, 5th, and 6th grade. Physical fitness assessment in this study consisted of step test, body mass index (BMI), push-up, and sit-up. Academic achievement data was collected from final examination result. Most students (74,49%) has enough physical fitness. There is no significant correlation between physical fitness and academic achievement. Thus, based on this study, it was expected to conduct further study about other factors which affects the academic achievement.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out which gave better performance between using the Numbered Heads Together model assisted by number cards and picture media and Numbered Heads Together without media. The type of research used was quasi-experimental research, where respondents were grouped into two groups, namely the Numbered Heads Together group with media and the Numbered Heads Together group without media. The population in this study were all elementary school students in SDN Inpres Pela. The sampling technique was carried out by means of stratified cluster random sampling. The independent variable in this study is the learning media assisted learning model, while the dependent variable is mathematics learning achievement. The data collection methods used in this study were: 1) the documentation method, in the form of midterm exam scores, 2) the test, in the form of 25 multiple choice questions. Data analysis techniques in this study were: 1) balance test: using the t-test with the prerequisite test for normality test with the Lilliefors method and homogeneity test with the Bartllet test, 2) hypothesis testing: using the t-test. All analyzes of this study used a significance level of 5%. The conclusion of this study is that learning achievement in mathematics using the Numbered Heads Together model assisted by number cards and picture media is better than using the Numbered Heads Together model without media.
