Abstract

Abstract Background: Stroke may disrupt a patient's motor function, consequently affecting the quality of life. A stroke surviving brain has the ability to repair itself through neuroplasticity mechanism. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive device which can be used to stimulate the lesioned part of the brain in hope of triggering neuroplasticity.Aims: To find prove of the repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) effect on extensor digitorum communis muscle strength improvement in ischemic stroke patients. Methods: Subjects suitable with the inclusion criteria (N=18) were divided into two groups,  control group and intervention group. The control group underwent conventional therapy exclusively every day for 5 days in a row, while the intervention group underwent rTMS therapy and conventional therapy every day for 5 days in a row. Extensor digitorum communis muscle strength was measured using surface electromyography (sEMG) before and after treatment.Result: Significant increase of sEMG numbers were found on control group (p=0,003) and intervention group (p=0,001). The increase from the intervention group was not different when compared to the control group (p=0,067).Conclusion: TMS can increase extensor digitorum communis muscle strength but with no difference with a conventional therapy.

Abstract

Background: The effect of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) stretching, in addition to standard stretching, improves anticipatory balance in athletes with Cerebral Palsy (CP). We aimed to analyze the effects of PNF stretching to standard training over 4 weeks on anticipatory balance in Cerebral Palsy athletes at 6-month post-intervention evaluation. Methods: The subjects of this study are 24 athletes with Cerebral Palsy at the Indonesian National Paralympic Committee (NPC) training facility. Subjects divided into the treatment group (n = 12) received standard stretching exercises along with PNF stretching, and the control group (n = 12) performed only standard stretching exercises. Both groups received intervention 3 times per week for 4 weeks and evaluation 6 months post-intervention. Y balance tests (YBT) were measured in three directions: anterior (A), posterolateral (PL), and posteromedial (PM), pre- and post-intervention.Results: There was significant improvement of YBT in the treatment group after 4 weeks of intervention. For the right and left limbs, marked increases were observed in all directions (p < 0.05). No significant improvements in YBT were observed at 6 months post-intervention in all directions (p > 0.05).Conclusions: Significant improvements in the Y Balance Test were observed after 4 weeks, but no differences between the two groups at the 6-month evaluation. These findings suggest that while short-term gains in dynamic stability are achievable with PNF, sustained benefits require ongoing reinforcement to maintain neuromuscular adaptations over time.

Abstract

Falling is a major health problem and is also a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the elderly. The more serious consequences of falling on the elderly are the increased risk of injury and fear of falling. Activities-Specific Balance Confidence (ABC) scale is one of the assessment instruments for fear of falling. This instrument is used to assess balance confidence in various ambulation activities. The purpose of this study was to carry out the process of adaptation of the cross cultural ABC English questionnaire to ABC Indonesian. This study was a cross sectional study with participants of five elderly members of the Posyandu Lansia who were in accordance with the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The output is the correlation between the score of ABC English with ABC Indonesian and the score of ABC Indonesian with ABC English Back Translation which are tested at different times. All the question score in the ABC English questionnaire correlated with ABC Indonesian, as well as the Indonesian Language ABC correlated with ABC English back translation, have a significant correlation (r> 0.3). The conclusion of this study is that the ABC English has a close meaning with the ABC Indonesian and the ABC Indonesian has a close meaning with the ABC English back translation. The validity and reliability of the Indonesian version of ABC questionnaire is needed to obtain a valid and reliable questionnaire.
