Abstract

Background: The six-minute walk test (6MWT) is a useful test for measuring functional capacity and predicting morbidity and mortality. The 6MWT is not widely used in children because the exact reference data are often not known, and the test requires concentration and co-operation from the participants, which is harder to manage in children. The anthropometry characteristic influences the 6MWT distance. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the correlation between anthropometry characteristic and 6MWT distance in children aged 7-9 years old. Methods: This research was an observational analytic study using cross-sectional design that was conducted on August 2013. Weight, height and body mass index were measured according to the Decree of Ministry of Health Republic of Indonesia. The 6MWT was performed according to American Thoracic Society (ATS) in a 15m indoor walkway. The data were analyzed using several tests, including Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for data normality test and Pearson’s correlation test. Results: The average 6 MWT distance in all subjects was 390.45±50.05 meters, with the average 6 MWT distance in subjects aged 7 and 8 were 370.15±45.64 and 410.75±46.47 meters, respectively. Pearson’s correlation test showed a positive correlation between height and 6 MWT in allsubjects, but there was no correlation between height, weight and body mass index with 6 MWT distance in each age group. Conclusion: The anthropometry characteristic was not correlated with the 6MWT distance in children aged 7 and 8 years old.

Abstract

Background: Physical activity (PA) has been associated with multiple health benefits. However, the global population does not meet the PA recommendations. Virtual reality exergaming (VR EXG) can become an option to increase PA because it is fun, relatively easy to access and affordable through popular commercial devices.Aim: To investigate the immediate cardiovascular responses(blood pressure, heart rate), quantification of PA intensity(percentage of maximum heart rate (%HRmax), Borg’s rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and the level of enjoyment using visual analog scale (VAS) while playing VR EXG.Material and Methods: Fifteen healthy men (aged 31.87±3.14 years old, body mass index 23.77±2.47 kg/m2) undergone three“Fitness Boxing” Nintendo Switch™ playing modes in the same order: (1) single player-normal tempo, (2) single player-fast tempo and (3) versus. During playing, participant’s HR was monitored using Polar H10 heart rate sensor. Blood pressure was measured before and after playing. Borg’s RPE and VAS were collected after playing.Results: Our results showed significant heart rate and systolic blood pressure increase (p = 0.001) in all three playing conditions, whereas diastolic blood pressure was relatively constant (p > 0.05). The Borg’s RPE were in 12-13 range (moderate) and %HRmax range between 72- 81% (vigorous). The enjoyment level was found greatest in versus mode compared to other playing modes.Conclusion: VR EXG Nintendo Switch™ “Fitness Boxing” can elicit immediate cardiovascular responses and provides an enjoyable moderate to vigorous PA intensity in healthy male adults, and can be used to meet the weekly PA recommendations.

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Dyslipidemia is a lipid metabolism abnormality marked by increase or decrease of lipid fraction in the plasma. Statin or 3-Hydroxy-3-Methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitor is an important dyslipidemia medication that may induce apoptosis of the skeletal muscle.Decrease of Bcl-2 and Bax ratio causing caspase-9 activation followed by caspase-3 activation occur in apoptosis. Moderate intensity physical exercise (MIPE) decreases DNA fragmentation, increases Bcl-2 protein level and decreases Bax transcript level.Methods: Thirty healthy BALB/C strain Mus musculus divided into 3 groups: first intervention group with statin only treatment (S), second intervention group with statin treatment plus MIPE using motorized treadmill (ST), and control (C) group with no statin and nor exercise. The duration of treatmentwas 28 days. Statin treatment dose was 2.06mg/kg bodyweight. Measurement caspase-3 was done by immunohistochemistry evaluation and the expression of capase-3 was calculated by cells count which expressing caspase-3.Results: There were more muscle cells expressing caspase-3 in the S group (47.00±12.92cells) than the C group (2.70±1.94 cells); p=0.000, the ST group (21.44±10.13 cells) than the C group (p=0.001), as well as S group and the ST group (p=0.000).Conclusion: Moderate intensity physical exercise can decrease caspase-3 expression in statin treated subject.Keywords: apoptosis, caspase-3, dyslipidemia, moderate intensity physical exercise, statin.

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: To determine the effect of adding elastic taping to conventional rehabilitation therapy onthe improvement of shoulder pain and motor function of the upper limbs in patients with subacute strokewith shoulder subluxation.Methods: Research subjects who met the inclusion criteria were recruited from medical rehabilitationclinic in RSUD Dr, Soetomo. The total research subjects were 20 people (10 in treatment group and 10 incontrol group). The parameters were Visual Analoque Scale (VAS) for assessing shoulder pain and FuglMeyer Assessment (FMA) for assessing motor function in the upper limb s.Results: There were significant differences before and after therapy for 3 weeks for VAS (p value = 0.00)in the treatment and control groups, there were significant differences in FMA in the treatment group (pvalue = 0.04), there were no significant difference in FMA in the control group (p value = 0.06). Therewas no significant difference in changes of VAS (p value = 0.23) and FMA (p value = 0.32) between thetreatment and control groups before and after therapy for 3 wee ks.Conclusion: The treatment group and the control group gave the same results on improvement ofshoulder pain and motor function of the upper limbs before and after therapy for 3 weeks. There was animprovement in motor function of the upper limbs in the treatment group and there was no improvementin motor function of the upper limbs in the control group befor e and after therapy for 3 weeks.Keywords: conventional rehabilitation therapy, elastic taping, Fugl Meyer Assessment (FMA),Glenohumeral subluxation (GHS), Hemiplegic shoulder pain (HSP), Visual Analoque Scale (VAS).

Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN) is one of the type 2 Diabetes Melitus (T2DM) complication, which may lead to diabetic foot ulcer and lower extremity amputation. Inflammation plays a role in the pathogenesis of this type 2 DM complication. Recent studies showed neutrophyl-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a potential inflammation marker. Early screening for neuropathy is an important part of the medical rehabilitation management of this condition. Material and methods: This study uses data analysis independent sample T-2 test with a significant (p<0.05). This study is a analytic observation cross-sectional study with type 2 diabetic male subjects, screened with Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument then divided into 2 groups, with DPN group (11 subjects) and without DPN group (7 subjects). This was followed with complete blood count laboratory testing (neutrophyl and lymphocyte level) and NCS to measure distal latency, amplitudo, and NCV of the tibial, peroneal, and suralnerve on both lower extremities. Result: There were 18 subjects in this study. Independent T-2 test showed that there was no significant difference in neutrophils (p=0.679), lymphocytes (p=0.127), and NLR (p=0.190) in the DM group without or with neuropathy. NCS showed that there were significant differences on the amplitude of the three nerves peroneal (p=0.003), tibial (p=0.017), sural (p=0.033), also in NCV of peroneal (p=0.001) and tibial (p=0.008). There were no significant differences found on the three distal latency of peroneal (p=0.074), tibial (p=0.151), sural(p=0.294), and NCV of sural (p=0.262). Conclusions: This study shows that there is no significant difference in NLR on both groups. There were significant differences in the amplitude of the three peroneal, tibial, and sural nerves and the conduction velocity of the peroneal and tibial nerves. However, there was no significant difference in the distal latency of the threeperoneal, tibial, sural, and the NCV of the sural nerves.Keywords: diabetes melitus, diabetic peripheral neuropathy, nerve conduction studies, neutrophyl-lymphocyte ratio, rehabilitation management.

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: The aim of this study was to explore the effect of adding oral curcumin to resistance exerciseafter immobilization on the diameter of skeletal muscle fiber in Rattus Norvegicus.Methods: This was a post-test only study design on animal model. Subjects of the study were male Rattusnorvegicus strain Wistar, age 10-12 weeks old, weigh between 150-300 g, were immobilized at soleusmuscle for 2 weeks, then randomly allocated to 3 groups: (i) control group, (ii) resistance exercise, (iii)oral curcumin + resistance exercise. After 4 weeks of intervention, the diameter of the muscle fibers wasmeasured.Result: The results of this study showed a significant difference on the diameter of skeletal muscle fiberbetween control group and resistance exercise, as well as control group and resistance exercise + oralcurcumin (p<0.05). There was no significant difference between resistance exercise only and resistanceexercise + oral curcumin (p>0.05).Conclusion: Administration of oral curcumin to resistance exercise after immobilization does not affectskeletal muscle fiber diameter in Rattus Norvegicus.Keywords : curcumin, good health and well-being, immobilization, resist ance exercise, skeletal muscle.
