Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mencari kompleksitas perbendaharaan kata-kata yang ada di dalam artikel opini surat kabar. Dengan menggunakan dua buah artikel opini yang mengangkat topik yang sama mengenai President Donald Trump yang terbit di koran The Jakarta Post dan ditulis oleh seorang penutur asli bahasa Inggris dan seorang yang bukan penutur asli bahasa Inggris, penelitian ini membandingkan tingkat kompleksitas perbendaharaan kata antara kedua penulis. Kedua buah artikel tersebut adalah Trump’s muslim travel ban will spark radicalization yang ditulis oleh Moh. Zaki Arrobi dari Indonesia dan Trump is attacking religious liberty yang ditulis oleh Noah Feldman dari United Kingdom. Penelitian ini menggunakan sebuah program bahasa berbasis web melalui situs www.lextutor.ca yang bisa diakses secara bebas, bernama Lexical Frequency Profile yang digagas oleh Laufer and Nation (1995). Hasil penelitian ini membuktikan pendapat Laufer and Nation (1995) yang menyatakan bahwa penulis yang bukan penutur asli bahasa Inggris mempunyai perbendaharaan kata yang lebih sedikit dibanding dengan penulis yang merupakan penutur asli bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini menunjukkan adanya perbedaan yang cukup penting.

Abstract

This paper tries to investigate the use of directive speech acts in different social class. Using the six types of directive speech acts proposed by Ervin-Tripp (1976), which are need statement, imperative, imbedded imperative, permission directive, question directive and hint, this paper focuses on the main male characters’ utterances from two novels; Crazy Rich Asians written by Kevin Kwan which represents upper class society and I am the Messenger written by Markus Zusak which represents lower class society. The results show that both upper and lower social classes mostly use imperative directive (42 utterances or 80%). Lower class male character uses more ‘need statement directive’ than upper class male character. Meanwhile, upper class character uses more ‘question directive’ than lower class character. Generally, upper class people use the directive as commands to their employees while the lower class character uses directive in his work as a cab driver which required him to be more direct in asking and offering the customers

Abstract

Stand-up comedy is a popular phenomenon entertainment featuring a solo performer, called as Comic who narrates a comical story in front of live audiences. Since it was first developed in the United States, stand-up comedy has been flourishing all over the world. Stand-up comedy programs have become the most interesting television shows in Indonesia. It could be seen by the number of programs in some local television channels. One of them is SUCI (Indonesian Stand-up Comedy) broadcasted by Kompas TV. SUCI is a stand-up comedy competition purposes to seek the best Indonesian Comic. This paper aims to analyze the sequential organization of three Indonesian Comics who performed in Grand Final SUCI season five. Using the serial sequential organization proposed by Scarpetta and Spagnolli (2009) as the theoretical framework, this study outlines the narrative of the stand-up comedy’s texts and seeks whether there is a difference between the three finalists of SUCI 5 in delivering their narratives.

Abstract

The present study compares the lexical richness of 30 essays taken from the same class of University of Bina Sarana Informatika (henceforth mentioned as UBSI)’s students.  The 30 essays were written by female and male of English Department students during their first, second, and third semester. This paper uses Web-based Second Language (L2) Lexical Frequency Profile (LFP), a batch mode of the web-based interface to the lexical richness proposed by Laufer and Nation (1995) which allows the users to calculate and to analyze the lexical richness of a corpus of text files at one time.  The focus of this study is merely on the score of tokens, types and type-token ratio (TTR). The results show that the average of tokens produced by male students is higher than female students. In term of types, the average types of female students are lower than male students. Meanwhile, the highest TTR score was gained by female students (0.60) and the lowest TTR score was produced by male students (0.55), both in the second semester. A big TTR Score indicates a high lexical richness, while a small TTR shows a low lexical richness. By comparing the lexical richness of students’ writings, this study is expected to show the students’ writing skill improvement or impairment during first three semesters of studying English.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the differences of language use between two short-stories published in two teen magazines which represent gender. According to the content, context, and segment readers, HAI magazine is considered as teen male magazine while KAWANKU is considered as teen female magazine. The results of this study confirm the theory of gender in writing production proposed by Coates (1993) who stated that men tend to use a report style aiming to communicate factual information, whereas women more often use a rapport style which is more concerned with building and maintaining relationships.  The two short-stories in HAI and Kawanku reflect the issue of gender construction in society through written discourse. Gendered language that occurs in the literary works such as short-story declare that the differences between male and female way of speak can be found in written texts.

Abstract

The research investigated the syntactic complexity of opinion articles published in online newspapers from English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) countries in South-East Asia (SEA). The aims of the research were, first, to analyze the types of Syntactic Complexity (SC) of opinion articles in online news media. The second was to seek the difference in syntactic complexity in online opinion articles between ESL and EFL countries. The third was to seek whether there was a significant difference in terms of types of syntactic measurements between ESL and EFL countries. To answer the questions, the research applied both quantitative and qualitative methods. Twelve opinion articles from online news media in SEA countries were derived from Malaysia and Singapore, which represented ESL countries, and Indonesia and Thailand, which represented EFL countries. The data were analyzed by using an L2 syntactic complexity analyzer. The Second Language Syntactic Complexity Analyzer (L2SCA) program displayed fourteen syntactic complexity measures divided into five types of measurements such as the length of production, sentence complexity, subordination, coordination, and particular structures. From comparing overall ESL and EFL countries and each of the opinion articles topics, the research results reveal that opinion articles of ESL countries show a higher score on the lengthof production, sentence complexity, subordination, and particular structures than EFL countries. Meanwhile, in coordination type, EFL countries display a higher number of a score than ESL ones. The research indicates there is no significant difference between ESL and EFL countries since the p-value of each type of syntactic complexity is higher than 0,05.

Abstract

Background: Teaching languages has different ways from teaching another subjects. Purpose: The objective of this research is to know the effectiveness of Active Learning Method in Teaching Simple Future. Design and methods: This research is using an evaluation method. The research was conducted at the seventh grade of SMP Tunas Harapan, Pasar Kemis, Tangerang. The data were collected through observation, teaching learning process, pre-test and post-test, questionnaires. This program contains the planning, how to implement and improve the students’ English Grammar Simple Future through Active Learning Method. The exercise was a mean to evaluate the action conducted in research. Results: The result of this research indicated that: (1) Using Active Learning Method in teaching simple future is one of a good solution to improve the students’ grammar skill, (2) it makes students are more easily in  understanding and using simple future tense in daily activities, and (3) students become more active in responding the lessons or questions given by the teacher.

Abstract

Background: Translators often deal with various types of texts, such as academic texts, journalistic texts, subtitle texts, legal texts, speech texts, literary texts, and manual texts. Manual text could be one of many interesting subjects of research in translation field. Translating manual text should follow the principles, such as communicative, short, concise, easy to read, reader-oriented, and natural in target language. Purpose: This study examines the translation technique of 12 excerpt of Cosmos oven manual text in the form of phrases, clauses, and sentences translated from English into Indonesia. Design and Method: This study uses 18 translation techniques to analyze the data that was taken from Cosmos oven manual text. Results: The results of the study showed that there are five translation techniques found in Cosmos oven manual texts: amplification (30%), modulation (27%), reduction (27%), borrowing (8%), and literal translation (8%). Cosmos oven manual text mostly used amplification technique. There are some additional words or information, paraphrasing, making the text explicit to make the translation clear and help target readers understand the text

Abstract

Rhetorical moves purposes to examine the basic structures of research articles, while meta discourse markers are elements to construct and to establish ideas and arguments. This study compares rhetorical moves and the function of meta discourse markers in research articles abstracts of different academic disciplines published in reputable indexed journals. This study employs (Pho, 2008)’s five-move analysis and the classification of meta discourse marker proposed by (Dafouz-Milne, 2008) as the research framework. The writer took five Indonesian Scopus Q1 and Q2 indexed journals from different academic disciplines. Those are Indonesian Journal Science and Technology (IJoST), Indonesian Journal of Applied Linguistics (IJAL), Journal on Mathematics and Education (JME), Studia Islamika and Forest and Society.  The results show that in terms of rhetorical move of abstracts, M2 and M4 became the moves which occur in all journal abstracts. In terms of meta discourse markers, all journal abstracts employ logical markers and code glosses. Sequencers, topicalisers, and illocutionary markers are used in small numbers, while reminders and announcements are not be found in any abstracts. The findings could help students and writers to produce abstracts that fulfill the requirements to be published in Scopus indexed journals.

Abstract

Opinion articles are part of a professional discourse genre that can be found in newspapers. These articles are separated from news pages and written for the public, so they contain a variety of cultural backgrounds. This study looked at 151 opinion articles published in The Jakarta Post of the March 2016 editions. Shi and Kubota’s (2007)four pattern of rhetorical organization was adapted as the theoretical framework for the present study. The results of this study showed that the overall rhetorical pattern of The Jakarta Post opinion articles is a three-part structure of introduction, body and conclusion paragraphs. In term of the placing of the thesis statement, 47% of non-native writers and 38% of native writers put the thesis statement in the introduction part with a single sentence paragraph or two short single-sentence paragraphs, and 38% of non-native writers and 40% of native writers wrote the introduction part with two or more multi-sentence paragraphs, and put the thesis statement at the end of them. Only 8% of non-native writers and 5% of native writers put the thesis statement in the body part, while 7% of non-native writers and 17% of native writers put the thesis statement in the conclusion. Generally, there was a slight difference between native and non-native writers in terms of the placement of thesis statement, where the non-native writers tended to use a single sentence paragraph as the thesis statement as well as to begin the essays, while native writers preferred to use two or more multi sentence paragraphs. This study proves that professional writings such as newspaper opinion articles follow the English rhetorical conventions; deductive, logical, and direct style as represented in the three-part structure.
