Abstract

This research was done to analyze how the students’ writing styles are in their descriptive paragraph in terms of sentence structure, word choice, degree of details and descriptions, and degree of formality. This is a descriptive qualitative approach with content analysis method. The sample of this study was 26 of fifth semester students of English Education Program UIN TS Jambi academic year 2018/2019. Technique of collecting the data was by documenting students’ descriptive paragraph writing and doing semi structure interview.  The result finding showed that the students have different style of writing. In terms of sentence structure, some students used many simple sentences in their writing that make their paragraphs are monotonous and boring to read; while a few students used a mixture of these sentence types that make their paragraphs are interested to read and seemed attractive. In terms of word choice, the students’ paragraphs mostly used sensory details and a figurative language of simile in describing the object. While in degree of details and description, in general all of students’ paragraphs are specific and descriptive by using prepositional phrases and adding many adjectives to describe the characteristics of the object. In addition, related to degree of formality, in general students’ descriptive paragraphs are casual.

Abstract

Scientific paper writing training program through Community Service (PKM) activities aim to train students of the Islamic Banking study program, Islamic Economics Law study program, and Islamic Economics study program STIE Syari'ah Al-Mujaddid Tanjung Jabung Timur to write their scientific papers in accordance with the ethics of writing scientific papers. Before executing the PKM, the PKM team announced the planned activities via social media and contacted STIE Syari'ah Al-Mujaddid directly. From the results of the community service implementation team's discussions with STIE Syari'ah Al-Mujaddid, it was determined that the fundamental problems faced by STIE Syari'ah Al-Mujaddid students were as follows: Students' inability to complete the Final Project on time resulted from a variety of deficiencies and motivations in their thesis writing methods, as well as a lack of motivation to write and knowledge of the technical aspects of writing correctly (Thesis). Students do not understand the Technique and Preparation of Thesis Proposals, the distinction between a thesis and an article, nor how to locate reference sources.This service involves all students of semester VII (Seven) who are required to make scientific work as a final project to hold a bachelor's degree. This activity is carried out using the method of observation, lectures, and practice, as well as evaluation. The results of this activity are that participants gain knowledge about how to write their scientific paper in accordance with the ethics of writing scientific papers and avoid plagiarism.

Abstract

Since studies about integrating Islamic values and local wisdom, especially in the Jambi context, have been scarcely found in the literature, this research is aimed to investigate the integration of such values in the English module that is suitable and practical for high school students. This developmental research used ADDIE approach which consists of five stages: analyze, design, develop, implement and evaluate. The sample for this study was an English teacher and 38 students of class IX of at one of the Islamic junior high school in Jambi by using instrument interviews, observation, and questionnaires. Based on the result of the validity questionnaire by two expert validators, a mean percentage of 82.07% is obtained and categorized as very valid. The result of students’ practicality questionnaire shows a percentage of 83.86% and categorized as very practical. Meanwhile, the result of teachers’ practicality is 87.50%, and also categorized as very practical. It could be concluded that the integrated Islamic values and Jambi local wisdom on the English module is suitable, practical and beneficial for both students and teacher. The researcher further recommends using this module for teaching English, especially for the procedure text type as discussed in the paper.
