Abstract

This research studies the types of feedbacks made by EFL students in a writing class. A number of 25 students essays were collected and analysed. The results revealed that a number of 61 responding feedbacks were found in the types of support, sharing knowledge, negotiation, appreciation and criticism. Meanwhile, 142 correcting feedbacks were found in the types of coded, uncoded, a combination of coded and uncoded and direct answer. The type most used in responding feedback was support, which indicates that it is an important pursuit in these students learning to drive each other into improving their writing skills with confidence. Whilst the least used was criticism, and this indicates that it was not considerably favoured to be given in the peer correction feedbacks since they restrain encouragement and cause social anxiety. The type most used in correcting feedbacks was a combination of coded and uncoded. This signifies that to provide both mark and symbol on an error can avoid confusion between the student corrector and the student writer. The least used was direct answer, which signified that it was only done by students who had high English proficiency and confidence to provide the correct answer directly on the errors.

Abstract

This research investigated EFL Indonesian students' perception of using e-dictionaries in learning English. The subjects were 50 students still studying at a university in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. They completed a questionnaire, and ten were selected to be further interviewed. The questionnaire and interview questions were developed from several theories proposed by experts. The results of the study showed that the students had a positive attitude toward the use of e-dictionaries. Although e-dictionaries provided some benefits for students’ language learning, especially in vocabulary, such as ease of use, time, and place, the students also faced some difficulties using them. These included incomplete information on the definitions offered for words searched, uncomfortable and constant pop-up advertisements on the apps, cost and internet quota, and finally, eye health issues where students could not read their smartphone screen for some time duration. It is hoped that as the dominance of digital technology increases, more applications in the future can resolve these problems to better assist students in language learning.

Abstract

This study investigated students’ interest in using YouTube movie videos in practicing their listening ability either inside or outside of class. This study used a mix of open and closed questionnaires adopted from Kelsen (2009) on the motivation of using YouTube for listening. 45 students enrolled in a Listening III class were taken as the sample. The findings showed that the highest motive for students to use it was because ‘using YouTube has been beneficial to their English, followed by ‘using YouTube is interesting’, then, ‘using YouTube motivated them to study English’ and ‘the YouTube material was relevant to what was studied in class”. The lowest motive included ‘using YouTube in class motivated them to use it to themselves to study English outside of classes. Furthermore, some students’ open responses to YouTube were: they can practice their English by watching native speakers; it has pictures so it is easy for students to understand the topic, and the materials were relevant since they were practicing listening. Yet, negative responses were also found such as they did not have internet connection at home, were not motivated to do it alone and were not assigned homework to use it. Thus, YouTube can be considered to be used as a material in listening class because it is found to provide many benefits for students.

Abstract

This study is aimed at discovering the benefits of the Reciprocal Teaching Method (RTM) in the reading classroom, finding out the achievements of students after four comprehension training sessions of using RTM, and exploring the perceptions of students on the use of RTM. This method uses four comprehension strategies: predicting, questioning, clarifying, and summarizing, to help learners monitor their development of reading comprehension by themselves. Students work in groups of four or five and the members are divided into five roles which are the leader, predictor, clarifier, questioner, and summarizer. The subjects were 24 students from the twelfth grade at a high school in Banda Aceh. Observations, tests, documents and interviews were collected to get the data. The results showed that the students were more active and productive in the reading classroom after RTM sessions and their reading proficiency improved. They learnt how to apply several of the strategies from RTM while reading. The results also showed that they preferred this method for teaching-learning reading compared to the conventional one. Therefore, teachers are suggested to consider using this method for teaching reading that instils the students on how to apply the four comprehension strategies used in reading.
