Abstract

AbstractMigration is not only migrating to another land but most importantly, to the different social and cultural surrounding. This does affect not only identity development but also parenting style. The problem of identity development and parenting in the migrant family is shown in the German movie titled Solino. This movie shows the story of an Italian family who migrated to Germany and faced many identity problems. This research questioned the depiction of how the identity development of migrant children affected by the style of fatherhood. The question will be answered using the qualitative method and literary analysis. Identity development, parenting, and cinematography theories are used to illuminate the scenes in the movie. The result shows that the authoritarian parenting style used by father figure to his children who rise in the egalitarian German society will force the children to rebel. This movie delivers an essential message that migrant parent should open and adopts the right parenting style to raise their children in different social and cultural society.  Keywords: Fatherhood, migrant, parenting style, identity.

Abstract

This study discusses trauma healing through the film "The Zookeeper's Wife" which was adapted from a novel by Dianne Ackerman and directed by Niki Caro as a way to normalize the relations between Germans and Jews. The purpose of this study was to identify the signs  in the film which can be used as a healing from historical trauma due to the holocaust. This study uses qualitative method with data in the form of data extraction that has been taken from the film "The Zookeeper's Wife." Using Charles Sanders Pierce’s semiotic theory and Trauma theory by some experts, the outcome of this research shows that there are two elements for healing historical trauma, namely the trauma healing of Urszula, a Jewish girl and the trauma healing of German that leads to German-Jewish normalization.

Abstract

National identity in Great Britain is always interesting to discuss, as it dealt with England, Scotland, Walles, and Northern-Ireland identity, yet it is English identity that overshadowed British Identity. The problematic concept of English identity also brought up by Billy Bragg, a remarkable British musician, in his England, Half English-song in early 2000. This paper scrutinizes the question of “what does half English mean and what should be meant by full English?” using critical views on multiculturalism. The result shows that the basic idea of Bragg's works important in showing how the most changeable and essential signs of national culture and the clearer voices of its immigrant are perfect expressions of the "ultimate" Half-ness of England.

Abstract

A Coffee in Berlin, Kafkaesque Modern, Kopi            AbstractSince Chlöe Swarbrick, a politician from New Zealand stated the phrase ‘OK Boomer’ in her speech about the climate change, the phrase is now widely used in social media in response to the issue of differences of opinion and views between generations. To understand this issue, we need to understand the phenomenon of generation gap. This phenomenon is reflected in the film A Coffee in Berlin (2014) by Jan-Ole Gerster, which becomes a corpus of this research. This research aims to explain the aspects behind the generation gap phenomenon and its relation to kafkaesque elements with coffee as the media to symbolize both. This research will focus on the generation gap phenomenon between the silent generation, baby boomers, and millennials, as well as the impact felt by Niko Fischer, the main character in the film, as a millennial. Theory of Generations by Karl Mannheim, qualitative methods, literature review and semiotics approach are used to find the meaning from conversation and scences in the film. The results show that the generation gap phenomenon contains two different power relations in the form of dissapointment and new hope for millennials. The generation gap and kafkaesque situations are displayed through coffee symbolism in the film. In the context of the generation gap, coffee symbolizes new hope for younger generation. In the context of kafkaesque, it symbolizes irony and the frustation of obtaining something that is desired.  Keywords: Generation Gap, A Coffee in Berlin, Modern Kafkaesque, Coffee

Abstract

Abstract - The purpose of this research was to find out how the portrayal of women (concerning international women's day/Weltfrauentag) depicted in two German online illustrations.  This research methodology is a qualitative method that is written by descriptive analysis with the approach of the study of literature. This research used Sara Mills's critical discourse analysis and semantic triangle theory by Charles Sanders Peirce. The research found that the portrayal of women in the new media (in the form of illustrated online) open the discussion on the domestication of woman. This discussion is presented differently in the two illustrations: while the first shows hope and positive attitude, the latter is seen pessimistic. The first illustration depicts the domestication of a woman using the word-play by two monks that are denied by using bright color and symbol of woman empowerment. The second illustration describes the power-relation between a male director and a woman employee. The male director argues the "International Woman Day" by referring only to woman domestic skills. The dark color and symbols support pessimistic attitude in the illustration. Keywords – International Woman’s Day, Domestication of Woman, online illustration, Weltfrauentag.

Abstract

This study analised the theme of the myth contained in three lyrics of Lorelei from three different times. Lorelei is a mythical woman whose name is taken from a cliff on the Rhine. This research will refer to the relationship between women (Lorelei) and male figures and the relation will be analyzed through the perspective of existentialist feminism using two main concepts, Men as Subjects and Women as Other Figures. The author chose the Lorelei-lyrics from three different time, Heinrich Heine's Lorelei (1823), Dschinghis Khan's Loreley (1981), and Faun's Lore Lay (2013) to show the Lorelei myth displayed in different era. Through the study of existentialism feminism, it can be seen that Lorelei is still described as the object which is marginalized by the strong myth of the fame fatale. Although the depictions of Lorelei's subjectivity can be found in some parts of the lyrics by Dchingis Khan (1981) and Faun (2013), but those depictions are still very vague. Keywords: Myth, Lorelei, Existentialism Feminism, Men, Women

Abstract

The involvement of a child in a case which put them in the position of victim or perpetrator needs to be reviewed through their identity development. One of the cases that discussed the issue about victim and perpetrator was the postwar situation when the Nazi regime collapsed on the end of World War II. Lore (2012) by Cate Shortland became one of the movies that took time on postwar situation and bringing up the issue of victim or perpetrator through the perspective of adolescent. The subject of this study is the identification of the Nazi supporter adolescent’s position as victim or perpetrator that is depicted in the movie Lore. The method used in this study is qualitative method with the main theory of Alterität und Identität by Wolfgang Raible and the adolescent identity status theory by James Marcia. The theory of Alterität und Identität is used to analyze how the main character interacts with foreign things she encounters in the postwar period and its influence on her identity awareness. The identification of the character’s position as victim or perpetrator on postwar context in the movie Lore was carried out using the status of adolescent identity theory. The result of this analysis shows that there is a development of identity experienced by the character Lore, so that the movie depicts her as a victim based on the adolescent identity development.

Abstract

Attitude to the Nazi past turns to its new phase in the 1980s, after the time of repressing, silent and mourning brings the new discourse in talking about the Holocaust. It was a tendency of "denying" the Holocaust and new anti semitism movement. In the 90s, Jewish authors confirm their position as „self determined agents' in the literary and political area. One of them is Doron Rabinovici, an Austrian Jewish author who wrote the novel Suche Nach M in engaging on the project of constructing a contemporary Jewish identity. In this article, the question of how Robinovici proposes the construction of contemporary Jewish identity will be answered through critical reading on Jewish myth and identity formation theory. The result shows two major strategies that he proposes in his novel: “deconstructs” the Jewish myth (by playing other possibilities to interpret them and unveil the truth) and suggests the self referential concept (find oneself based on 'the self' instead of immersing self in 'the Other‟). These two strategies can be seen as an active engagement with one own traumatic past. It is a historical and self awareness approach to construct a problematic contemporary Jewish identity.

Abstract

Germany nowadays is known as one of the most robust economies in Europe. Yet, at the beginning of 20th Century Germany, poverty became a severe problem that caused a social and cultural impact on the children. Positive self-esteem and resiliency in children were needed to cope with the situation. The roman titled Pünktchen und Anton, written in 1931 by Erich Kästner, describes the children’s life in Berlin dealt with the poverty problem.  This research aims to see how self-esteem and resiliency in children described as a life tool for the first figure (Anton) who classified as an adversity child in the novel. This question is answered by using descriptive qualitative method and self-esteem theory by Nathaniel Branden.  The result shows there is advocacy in describing a marginalized Anton to become a hero thank to his positive self-esteem (self-efficacy and self-respect). His positive self-esteem builts him to be resilient.

Abstract

Ethnic persecution often happens in several countries in the world. This has also been a part of german history in the second world war era which is renowned with the holocaust era during the Nazi regime. This article discusses one of the most famous autobiography in the world  written by a jewish girl, named Anneliese Marie Frank. She is one of the victims of Nazi persecution. She wrote a diary entitled “The Diary of Anne Frank.” I am interested in researching the otherness concept of Anne’s hiding room and its effect on the development of Anne’s identity as a teenager. I use the qualitative research method focusing on the content analysis. The theories applied in this article are Alterity and identity, identity development of a teenager and also space theory (Ort und Nicht-Orte) theory by Marc Augé to analyze how Anne Frank interacted with several  foreign matters she met in her hiding room and how the otherness within her space affects her identity development as a teenager. The results showed that Annex room was included in the category between “Orte” and “Nicht-Ort” which made Anne struggle with the existing alienation and could not reach her identity as a teenager well.
