Abstract

Mental illness in the world today is something that needs to be addressed seriously in order to support the lives of many people. In Germany, Turkish immigrant children live through an identity crisis because they feel far from "home". The process of searching for self-identity due to the huge cultural differences between west and east give rise to feelings of stress and depression as a characteristic of mental illness in adolescents. Therefore, Zoë Jenny through her novel Ein Schnelles Leben (2002) carries the theme of the diary as a representation of the search for self-identity. Ein schnelles Leben (2002) by Zoë Jenny also conveys that feeling far from "home" is something that must be resisted in a way that can keep the sufferer alive, such as by writing. In this study, the author uses a descriptive research method by presenting a complete picture of the state or social phenomena presented in the novel Ein Schnelles Leben and supported by theories about diaries and personas to find out the importance of identity and the various personalities (public masks). There are three sections in the analisis: a) Das Blaue Buch as Story Telling Media. b) Persona and Intertextuality in Ein schnelles Leben, and c) Das Blaue Buch’s Role in Identity’s Formation. The result is that diary in the process of searching for self-identity proven to be able to provide happiness because it is often chosen as an "escape" by the main character.

Abstract

AbstractSocial criticism is often showed in various forms, one of it is through an illustration. Thus, many people ultimately poured their aspirations, criticism and even innuendo into a drawing. The easy access to the internet today also makes the illustrators take part in doing literary works that are published online. Through the semiotic theory of Ferdinand de Saussure, this paper analyses three online illustrations made by German cartoonists and illustrators; Schwarwel, Harm Bengen, and Freimut Woessner. These three corpuses are published online through their website. The result of this research indicates that the illustrations by Schwarwel, Harm Bengen, and Freimut Woessner represent a rejection of German refugees and immigrant in the political, educational and social sphere. Keywords: Internet, Illustration, Immigrants, Refugees, Representation, Rejection

Abstract

The relationship between Germany and Asia is characterized by its complexity and uniqueness. Unlike other European nations, Germany established close connections with Asia by drawing inspiration from its rich cultural heritage. Germany’s historical background, being overpowered and defeated by France at the beginning of its formation to nationhood, led German thinkers and philosophers to seek sources of national self-identity other than those imbued with antiquity and Western culture. Germany's perception of itself about the East (as well as other regions) can be understood through the lens of German colonial fantasies, which depict Germany as a benevolent colonizer capable of establishing harmonious colonies. This concept of colonial fantasy is dynamic and evolves in line with German historical stages. In this study, we will examine Rudolf Utsch's three-part series of German adolescent adventure texts set in Indonesia by employing a textual analysis approach and focusing on the concept of colonial fantasy by Susanne Zantop. The research outcomes suggest that both German characters were depicted as benevolent colonizers, yet their efforts to establish a harmonious colony proved unsuccessful. Several biases stemming from colonial fantasies are discovered, including gender bias, the marginalization of local characters, and an imbalance in the portrayal of space and location.
