Abstract

As the home of many ethnic groups, Indonesia is a showcase of diversity. On the one hand Indonesiais benefited in many crucial sectors such as economy and tourism from the rich diversity of its natural and human resources but on the other hand the country is facing a high risk of intergroup friction. The goverment of Indonesia attempted to end social conflict and disintegration in many ways, from interfaith dialogue to military occupation. Despite of all progress, little has been done to find a fundamental resolution. This study examines the importance of paradigm change in understanding conflict. The New Order approach in conflict resolution suggests that conflict is destructive and therefore needs to be avoided. However, conflict can also be constructive and in order to deal with conflict in a constructive way, institutions or organizations must be aware of this two-fold concerns and citizens must be educated in the skill to face conflict. Going deeper in the plea that education constructs a nation, using the same analogy, peace education should also construct a peaceful nation. Finally, this study proposes the use of multicultural literature to reconstruct the notion of conflict through the practice of multicultural education in early childhood education.

Abstract

This paper observes theological shift towards a personalized spirituality of Muslim religiosity in America. In the face of global resurgence of Islamic movement and its ambitious call towards purification, personalized form of Islam is strongly criticized to be deviant and a mere practice of heresy. Islamic mysticism or commonly known as Sufism gained more popularity in modern America for its stress on God’s mercy over exclusive legalism in understanding cosmic law and the divine consequences. Over the year, it has proven its catalytic role for a more peaceful interreligious understanding on account to reflexivity and cosmopolitan consciousness. Drawing from a recent scholarship by Ulrich Beck on individualized religion, this paper explores; process of individualization of religion in forming modern American religious experience and the socio-cultural relevance of Sufism in shaping contemporary religious relation of Islam in America. Data utilized in this research draws upon interviews and observational fieldworks in the East Coast America.

Abstract

This study aims to examine religious literacy practices of traditional Islamic boarding school known as Pesantren in addressing the social-religious polarization issue in Indonesia. This study employs phenomenology method with a sociology of religion approach emphasizing the religious literacy outlook. Religious literacy entails a comprehensive approach to understanding the various concept of religiosity in a plural society and adds to it the ability to critically reflect on the fundamental intersections of religion and social, political, and cultural life through multiple lenses (Moore, 2007). Data is collected through library research, field observations, structured interviews involving pesantren’s leaders, teachers and students in Pesantren Al-Muayyad, Windan, Surakarta. Discussion result shows that: 1) through a dynamic power and network mobilization, Kyai plays the role of a strategic religious actor who translates religious pluralism to the public — facilitating pesantren as community development center where authentic and meaningful socio-religious interactions among students takes place; and 2) to build a resilient faith community member, Al-Muayyad Windan designed three integrative stages of religious literacy enhancement i.e., religious literacy at the personal level, religious literacy at the intrareligious level, and religious literacy at the interreligious level.

Abstract

Teenage popularity is often portrayed negatively in American pop culture, frequently associated with bullying, beauty privilege, and social exclusion. This study offers an alternative perspective by applying Mitch Prinstein’s theory of likeability, which frames popularity as an indicator of strong interpersonal relationships and high social acceptance. This perspective is captured in Amy Heckerling’s Clueless (1995), particularly its depiction of the "popular girl" trope as shaped by fashion, social status, and influence among affluent Beverly Hills teens. Focusing on the film’s leading character, Cher Horowitz, this study examines how likability is represented as a positive form of popularity. This study employed a descriptive method to analyze how Cher’s character embodies likeability as a form of social acceptance. The primary data consisted of the film script, including dialogue, narration, and monologue, while secondary sources included books, journals, and scholarly articles. Data collection involved watching the film, reading the script, and systematically identifying relevant elements. Data were analyzed using an interpretive approach to unpack and discover the underlying themes, patterns, and messages conveyed in the narrative. Findings reveal that Cher’s popularity aligns with the likability type, characterized by her ability to make others feel happy, appreciated, and included. The portrayal of such key traits offers a contrast to more negative portrayals of popularity found in other American teen movies, such as Cruel Intentions (1999) and Mean Girls (2004).
