Abstract

This research was aimed to investigate what kind of politeness principle and most dominant type applied in the utterances of the main characters’ Akeelah and the Bee movie and strategies applied in their utterances of the main characters’ Akeelah and the Bee movie. A descriptive qualitative was employed in this research. It concerned with the description of the data in the form of utterances produced by the characters in which politeness principles and strategies exist. There were two sources in this research. The primary source was the script of the movie. The secondary sources were books. The results of this research were: first, the main characters applied agreement maxim, approbation maxim, tact maxim, modesty maxim, and sympathy maxim in their utterances and the most dominant type used is agreement maxim. Second, in the application of politeness strategies, the main characters applied Bald-on-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record in their utterances. Keywords: Akeelah and the Bee, politeness principles, politeness strategies.

Abstract

ABSTRAKArtikel ini menganalisis 18 nilai-nilai pendidikan karakter yang ada dalam penilaian alternatif. Penilaian alternatif adalah jenis penilaian otentik. Salah satu kelebihan dari penilaian ini adalah penilian ini memfokuskan pencapaian belajar siswa pada prosesnya. Diharapkan dengan melakukan jenis penilaian ini karakter siswa bisa dibentuk dan ditingkatkan. Jenis dari penilaian yang didiskusikan di dalam artikel ini adalah portofolio, jurnal, dan self dan peer-assessment. Dari hasil analisis ditemukan bahwa ada nilai-nilai pendidikan karakter bangsa Indonesia dalam penilaian alternatif di atas. Dalam portofolio ditemukan karakter jujur, terbuka, berani, demokratis, tanggung jawab, komunikatif, menghargai. Dalam jurnal ditemukan karakter adalah jujur, toleransi, kreatif, demokratis, menghargai prestasi, disiplin, bersahabat/komunikatif dan peduli sosial. Dan dalam self dan peer assessment ditemukan karakter jujur, mandiri, demokratis, komunikatif, peduli sosial, dan tanggung jawab.Kata kunci: Penilaian alternatif, nilai, pendidikan karakter,

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to find out the categories and students’ perceptions of teacher’s talks that were applied by the English teacher in the teaching and learning process at Bani Adung Islamic Boarding School based on the framework Flander’s Interaction Analysis Categories (FIAC), and to know the students’ perceptions about the teacher’s talks. The participants of this research were the English teacher and the eighth grade students of the setting. The method of this research was qualitative descriptive method, and observation sheet, audio recording and questionnaire were used for data collection. The data taken from the teacher’s talks applied by the teacher in classroom activities were analyzed qualitatively. The result showed that the most dominant category was giving directions (29%), followed by asking the questions (27.5%), and the last category was accepting or using ideas of students (2.9%). The indirect talks were lower than direct talks. As a result, the teacher-centered method was found to be the most prevalent during classroom interaction. Students also preferred to be praised or encouraged, and effective language in the classroom was required. It is recommended that the teacher use all types of teacher talks in the classroom. They should, however, be based on the needs of the students.

Abstract

There are two objectives of this research were first, to find the most difficult question category that students faced in reading test, and last, to investigate the causes of students' difficulties. This research used a qualitative method and it was conducted at the first semester students of c class English Department of UNTIRTA year 2019. The descriptive method was used to expose the result of this research. The data were collected through documents of reading comprehension final test first semester and an interview with the students. The document was used to find out the most difficult question category, and the result after analyzing the document is the students got difficulties in answering the question about vocabulary mastery. It is also supported by the result of interviewing the students. There were 17 students from 20 students or 85% felt that the vocabulary question category in part B was difficult. Then, the interview was also used to investigate the causes of the student's difficulties in reading test. The result got after analysis, the causes of the students got difficulties and confused to answer vocabulary question because they were lack of vocabulary mastery, and their reading habit was poor. So, it indicates that students’ capability of guessing meaning some unfamiliar vocabulary or words in the current context needs to be improved.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out whether the Cloze Passage Technique has effect on students’ reading comprehension in narrative text. This research was conducted at the eighth grade of SMPN 8 Kota Serang in academic year 2019/2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research used quantitative method and true experimental design. The populations of this research were all classes in class VIII. The sample of this research were class VIII B which consisted 0f 20 students as the experimental class and class VIII F which consisted of 20 students as the control class. The experimental class was taught by using Cloze Passage Technique and control class without using Cloze Passage Technique. The research instrument was a test which consisted pre-test and post-test. The pre-test was given to students before treatment and the post-test was given to students after treatment. After collected and calculated the data, it was found that there was any effect of using Cloze Passage Technique. This was indicated by the value of tcount was higher than ttable (5,131 ≥ 2,024) at the level of significance of α 0,05 and degree of freedom is 38. It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. For those findings, this research showed that there is any effect of using Cloze Passage Technique on students’ reading comprehension in narrative text.

Abstract

By examining Banten's local wisdom, this paper intends to investigate the evolution of English for Tourism teaching materials. This article examines the concept of material development, material development principles, material development requirements analysis, and local wisdom as a point in the construction of teaching materials. The following section covers the material development process and analyzes the development of English Tourism course materials based on local knowledge. This article also offers advice on how to incorporate local knowledge into material development and how to create useful materials for an English for Tourism course.

Abstract

Classroom Management is a multifaceted concept and views about classroom and its styles can be categorized in various ways. This study focused on the classroom itself. Therefore, this study was intended to describe the classroom management and the use of teaching learning strategy at the eight grade students in SMPN 05 Kota Serang. This study was also aimed to give some contributions concerning the Classroom Management Strategy and the students’ participation on the use of the strategy in teaching learning process in the class. This study is qualitative research. The writer had chosen two english teachers who taught the eighth grade students of SMPN 05 Kota Serang in the academic year of 2017/2018 as the subject. The writers describe the process of organizing teaching and learning process in SMPN 05 Kota Serang by applying interview and observation to the teachers. The writers could conclude that T1 applied 72% and T2 applied 70% classroom management strategy in their classroom. They applied the classroom strategies from opening to closing activities, used seating arrangement during the teaching learning process, explained the material well, gave motivation, had positive attitude and built the relationship with students.

Abstract

The objective of this research to find out the influence of using Wattpad application on students’ reading comprehension of narrative text. In this research, the researcher used a quantitative method with quasi-experimental design as a method of this research. This research was conducted in two classes ; experimental class and control class. The experimental class was thaught by using Wattpad application and the control class without using it. The sample of this research were X MIA 2 as experimental classs and X MIA 1 as control class, each class consisted 30 students. The data was collected by using test which consisted of try out, pre-test, and post-test. The result of the research showed that using Wattpad application had significant influence toward students’ reading compreheansion in narrative text. It was indicated the value of t-test was higher than value of t-table (9.185 > 2.00) at the level of significant of a 0.05 and degree of freedom is 58. It means that the alternative hypothesis was accepted and null hypothesis was rejected. From those findings, it could be conclude that there was significant influence of using Wattpad application on students’ reading comprehension in narrative text.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the improvement of reading motivation and skill by using literature circles. The researcher used classroom action research. The sample of this research were the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Cinangka students. The researcher found that there is a significant improvement in reading motivation and skill by using literature circles. In the first cycle, students reading skill improved 42,9%, and the students reading motivation improved 41,%. In the second cycle gradually students reading skill improved 68,6%, and the students reading motivation improved 80,%. In the third cycle, students reading skill improved 91,4%, and the students reading motivation improved 91,4,%. It means that there is a significant improvement of reading motivation and skill which focused on discerning the main idea, specific information, understanding the sequence, and inference. All these suggest that improving reading motivation and skill by using literature circles is highly encouraged.

Abstract

This study aims at explaining the use of virtual tours in learning English for tourism in the English for Tourism course at the Department of English Education, Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University. Technology is an alternative that is used as a human response. In the field of education, innovation was born through technological developments, namely virtual tour services which became a learning platform equipped with visual, audiovisual and interactive learning resources. Studying at home can be boring for both students and teachers due to the confined environment in the room. It is hoped that the visual service organized by the virtual tour application in Indonesia can provide educational, inspirational and recreational value as well as in learning English for tourism which is carried out online
