Abstract

This study explores slang words found in the top 100 most-liked comments on the Youtube music video of IVE’s “ATTITUDE”. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the data were analyzed based on Allan and Burridge’s (2006) theory of slang classification and functions. The analysis found a total of 15 slang words and categorized it into five types: Fresh and Creative, Flippant, Imitative, Acronym, and Clipping. The findings show that Acronym is the most dominant slang type, while the most common function is to express impression. The results highlight how the original meanings of these slang words shift in digital fandom contexts and how slang is used by K-pop fans not only to convey enthusiasm and emotional responses but also to strengthen social bonds and shared identity in digital spaces. This study contributes to the understanding of language variation in online fan discourse and the role of slang as a tool for expression and solidarity.

Abstract

Indonesia is an archipelagic country rich in languages. This study discusses one of the regional languages in Indonesia, which is Sundanese. This research investigates the role of affixation in the formation of meaning on the base word two in Sundanese, contributing to the field of morphology within linguistics. The study is motivated by the limited exploration of affixation involving numerical bases in Sundanese, particularly among younger speakers who often exhibit inconsistent usage due to lack of systematic understanding. Using a qualitative content analysis method, data were collected from three Sundanese novels: Baruang Kanu Ngarora by D.K. Ardiwinata, Si Bedog Panjang by Ki Umbara, and Kabungbulengan by Hanna Djumhana Bastaman. The research identifies various forms of affixation such as prefixes (e.g., ka-, mi-, nga-), suffixes (e.g., -an, -na), and confixes (e.g., pa-…-an, mang-…-keun) that attached to the base word two. These affixes generate diverse semantic and pragmatic meanings, ranging from sequence and togetherness to actions involving two parties, as well as culturally spesific connotations like polygamy or disloyalty. The findings demonstrate that affixation in Sundanese does not merely serve morphological functions but also enriches the language’s capacity to express nuanced social and cultural interactions. This study contributes new insights to the understanding of Sundanese morphology and supports the preservation of regional languages amid rapid digital and intercultural development.

Abstract

This study explores the semantic fields of love and loss in Lord Huron’s song "The Night We Met," using a lexical semantics framework. Song lyrics, known for their emotional depth, serve as a rich source for analyzing affective meaning, particularly through word selection and repetition. The primary research question addresses how semantic fields are constructed within minimalist lyrical compositions to convey complex emotional states. In this analysis, a qualitative descriptive method is applied to examine the song's lexical items and group them into thematic semantic fields. The study finds that the song uses a concise set of lexemes connected to themes of memory, temporal disorientation, grief, and love. These thematic fields intertwine, interacting to depict a narrative that encapsulates unresolved emotional pain. Love and loss are not presented in isolation but are embedded in a broader emotional context, where words evoke both the sweetness of past affection and the sorrow of its absence. The overlap of these semantic fields reflects the internal conflict experienced by the narrator, torn between cherished memories and the painful realization of loss. The study concludes that despite the song’s brevity, the lyrics effectively evoke profound emotional responses through a meticulous choice of words and thematic consistency. The semantic fields constructed within the song illustrate how even minimal language can convey intense emotional content, providing valuable linguistic insight into the function of lyricism in popular music. The research demonstrates the ability of short, poignant lyrics to engage listeners emotionally, revealing how lyricists use limited language to encapsulate complex feelings of love and loss.

Abstract

This study examines the types and meanings of slang words used in Rick Famuyiwa's "Dope" movie (2015), and the research addresses the gap in understanding community-specific communication patterns by analysing authentic teenage dialogue through the theoretical framework for slang classification proposed by Allan and Burridge (2006). This study used qualitative descriptive methodology to identify and categorise slang expressions from the film's dialogue and transcript. The analysis identified 91 slang words, which were classified into five types: flippant, fresh and creative, imitative, clipping, and acronym. Flippant, fresh and creative slang indicates that characters use language that is innovative and different from standard meanings, reflecting the dynamic nature of urban youth communication. Slang is employed to establish interpersonal relationships, create group identities and express emotions. The findings contribute to an understanding of how slang is used in media representations, enriching the knowledge of youth culture and its application in film.

Abstract

This study explores the stylistic features found in the dialogue of the character Joker in The Dark Knight, directed by Christopher Nolan. As one of the most iconic villains in modern cinema, Joker is distinguished by his unconventional, provocative, and psychologically charged use of language. Through a stylistic approach, this research analyzes linguistic elements such as diction, sentence structure, figurative language, and repetition aiming to uncover how these features contribute to the construction of Joker’s identity as a villain. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method, with data drawn from selected excerpts of Joker’s dialogue. The analysis is guided by the stylistic framework of Geoffrey Leech and Mick Short. Ultimately, this research seeks to offer a deeper understanding of how language is used not only to shape character and ideology but also to evoke psychological impact within popular media narratives. Abstract

This study investigates the metaphorical expressions in the song Golden Hour by JVKE using Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) by Lakoff and Johnson (1980). The research aims to identify and analyze metaphors that represent emotional experiences, particularly romantic feelings, through the use of concrete and sensory imagery. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the lyrics of Golden Hour were analyzed to uncover how metaphorical language shapes the expression of love and emotional transitions. The findings reveal several dominant metaphor categories such as LOVE IS LIGHT, LOVE IS A JOURNEY, and EMOTION IS ELEVATION. These metaphors transform abstract emotions into vivid, relatable experiences by linking them to concepts like time, nature, and movement. The study concludes that metaphor in song lyrics functions as a cognitive and poetic device that enhances meaning and emotional resonance. The implications of this research highlight the relevance of metaphor analysis in understanding language, thought, and culture, especially in modern musical texts.
