Abstract

Vitamin D as an immunomodulator play an important role in controlling glycemic levels and reducing the risk of diabetes. HbA1c as a substance formed from glucose binding with hemoglobin which has a good relationship with average blood sugar levels of fasting, daily and 3 months. This research was conducted to determine the relationship between vitamin D levels and HbA1c in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This research used descriptive methods and the research samples were all patients who suffer from type 2 diabetes mellitus in the clinical laboratory of Thamrin Medan. Data were obtained by checking vitamin D and HbA1c levels in patients blood serum. The number of samples in this research were 47 people. The results of this research indicate that there is a very weak relationship between vitamin D levels and HbA1c, with r = 0,225 and R = 5,1%, therefore, it was clearly presented that effect of vitamin D on HbA1c is 5,1%.

Abstract

The research was conducted to investigate the existeme of borax in food producte which were made from meat. The research was carried descriptively by collecting 60 samples consists of 20 meatball samples, 20 sausage samples and 20 nugget samples from food seller in 20 elementary school in Percut Sei Tuan. The result showed that none of samples contained borax.

Abstract

Worm disease is still one of the health problems in Indonesia. Personal hygiene such as playing in the school ditch, on the ground, playing dirty and some children do not use footwear, long nails and the habit of not washing their hands with soap before and after playing, thereby increasing the risk of intestinal worms in children. This study aims to determine the percentage and types of intestinal nematode worm eggs that infect elementary school children grades 1 and 2 Raudathul Jannah Foundation, Penraujan Private Elementary School, Sunggal District, Deli Serdang Regency. The method used in this study was direct stool examination. Based on the results of the examination of 48 samples of elementary school students in grades 1 and 2, it was found that 3 samples were positively infected with intestinal nematode worm eggs with a percentage of 6.25% and there were 2 types of worm eggs that infect, namely Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura. Where sample (S 12) was infected with Trichuris trichiura worm eggs, sample (S 37) was infected with Ascaris lumbricoides worm eggs and sample (S 46) was infected with both types of worm eggs, namely Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui aktivitas antibakteri enam sabun antibakteri berlabel A, B, C, D, E, dan F terhadap Staphylococcus aureus. Penelitian dilakukan secara eksperimental dengan menggunakan metode difusi. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis dengan menggunakan rancangan acak lengkap. Zona hambat maksimum sabun yang paling efektif (32,17 mm) ditunjukkan oleh sabun cair "A", yang ditemukan paling mungkin menghambat pertumbuhan Staphylococcus aureus. Aktivitas antibakteri kuat lainnya juga ditunjukkan oleh sabun cair "B" dengan zona supresi 20,83 mm. Aktivitas antibakteri juga ditunjukkan oleh sabun "C" dengan daya hambat 14,67 mm dan sabun "D" dengan zona hambat 9,5 mm, namun dua sabun cair lainnya tidak menunjukkan aktivitas antibakteri.

Abstract

Salmonella sp. is a pathogenic microbe that causes digestive disorders that can cause death. One way to treat diseases caused by the bacteria Salmonella sp. is the use of antibiotic therapy. Salmonella sp. susceptible to antibiotic resistance due to improper use. The purpose of this study was to determine the susceptibility of Salmonella sp. Erythromycin and Chloramphenicol antibiotics. In this study, antibiotic sensitivity was tested using the Kirby-Bauer method (diffusion test) with a concentration of Erythromycin 250 mg/mL and antibiotics 500 mg/mL, Chloramphenicol antibiotics at concentrations of 250 mg/mL and 500 mg/mL. mL with 3 repetitions. The sample used in this study was a strain of Salmonella sp. suspended using Brain Heart Infusion Broth (BHIB) media and the antibiotic test was carried out using Mueller Hinton Agar (MHA) media. The greatest inhibition was seen in treatment with Chloramphenicol 500 mg/mL with an inhibition zone of 38.6 mm, followed by Chloramphenicol 250 mg/mL with an inhibition zone of 33.3 mm. The antibiotic Erythromycin 500 mg/ml had moderate inhibition against Salmonella sp. with an inhibition zone of 17.3 mm, while the antibiotic dose of Erythromycin 250 mg/ml produced a weak inhibitory effect on Salmonella sp. with a zone of inhibition of 12.5 mm.

Abstract

Fish is a kind of easily-damaged raw food which mostly caused by microorganism i.e bacteria, mold and yeast. Fish salting is one of common applied preservation method to avoid bacterial contamination as decay prevention. Another common method is by adding borax in fish preservation process which can inhibit the growth of microorganism but it caused a negative effect for consummer’s health. The objective of this study is to examine the presence of borax in the salted fish that is marketed at the Tanjung Balai Traditional Market, North Sumatra Province. This study used a qualitative test method by testing the sample in the laboratory in accordance with the standards of the Regional Health Laboratory. The results of the qualitative test of borax on 30 samples of salted fish from the market revealed that none of samples altered the color of tumeric paper after being dipped in the sample solution. This finding indicated that all samples of salted fish contain no borax.

Abstract

Gout is a disease caused by the buildup of purines that form purine crystals in the joints which causes pain in the joints. This study aims to determine the relationship between age and uric acid levels in employees at the Thamrin Medan Clinical Laboratory. This study uses a descriptive method with correlation analysis test, using a total sampling technique with a total of 56 respondent, with a male gender group of 14 people and a female gender group of 42 people. The result of the correlation test with a significance level 1 = negative correlation and ≥ 1 = positive correlation and the results obtained from n = 56 people with a value of r = 0,389602 with information (0.20-0.399= low correlation), meaning that there is no significant relationship between age and uric acid levels in Thamrin Medan Clinical Laboratory Employees.

Abstract

Denai Lama Village is one of 19 villages in Pantai Labu District, Deli Serdang Regency, which is known as a tourist village with a diversity of biodiversity, including garden ornamental plants that can be used to make handicrafts with economic value. To further develop the potential of yard ornamental plants, through the Medan Area University Community Service Program, the team offered the idea of making oshibana crafts, which is the art of flower arrangement using unused leaves or flowers. Partners in the activity are young women and local PKK mothers. The purpose of the activity is to provide information on the potential of yard ornamental plants to become creative products that have economic value. Implementation of activities with the method of presentation of material and information related to the potential of ornamental plants and the practice of making oshibana directly. It is hoped that this training will increase insight into the utilization of yard ornamental plants into products of economic value. This craft art can be used as decoration for various souvenir products such as bags, frames, key chains and bookmarks.

Abstract

Pandan Wangi (Pandanus amaryllifolius) is a plant that grows in the tropics and is known to contain antioxidants. Pandan Wangi can be a garden plant or deliberately planted in the yard. The preparations made in this study were pandan extract peel-off gel masks with varying concentrations of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). PVA is a water-soluble eco-friendly polymer. This study aims to determine the effect of PVA concentration on the physical quality of peel off gel mask preparations of fragrant pandan leaf extract. The research was conducted using laboratory experimental methods. Three gel peel off mask preparation formulas were used in the study, namely FI (5% PVA), FII (10% PVA) and FIII (15% PVA). Parameters for observing the quality of the peel off gel mask preparations included organoleptic tests, namely changes in aroma, color and shape as well as viscosity. The results showed that after a storage period of 28 days, the physical quality of the pandan leaf extract peel-off gel mask was still good. The mask preparation is characterized by a pale yellow color, smells of fragrant pandan extract and has a soft texture. Variation of PVA concentration affected the viscosity of the pandan leaf extract gel mask preparation.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether there is contamination of intestinal Nematode parasites found in fresh vegetables sold in Traditional Markets and Modern Markets in Medan City. This research method uses a descriptive method with a total sampling technique to be studied. Where the data that has been obtained and obtained is described or described as it is without intending to make conclusions that apply to the public or generalizations. Then the data can be made in tabular form in accordance with the Laboratory Standards. The results showed that from examining samples from the Brayan market, Sambu market, MMTC Pancing market, Sukaramai Denai market and Simpang Limun market, it was found that 5 samples of cabbage vegetables were contaminated with eggs and larvae of intestinal Nematode parasites and 5 samples of lettuce were contaminated with eggs and larvae of Nematode parasites. intestines. The types of parasites found were Ascaris lumbricoides eggs and Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus larvae. Meanwhile, the samples from Brastagi Plaza, Carefour, Irian Supermarket, Maju Bersama Supermarket, and Cemara Fruit and Vegetable Market showed that 2 samples of lettuce were contaminated with Ascaris lumbricoides worm eggs, and the samples of cabbage and basil vegetables did not find larvae or basil.
