Remembering God and Da’wa through English Islamic Song Lyrics of Indonesian Nasyid Maria Ulfa

This paper examines English Islamic song lyrics from an Indonesian nasyid group named Snada. The group is known as the icon of Indonesian nasyid group. The English lyrics are their efforts to get wider audience not only from Indonesia but also from international audience. This research analyses two English song lyrics sung by Snada namely “My Pray” and “Where Are You Going” from Snada’s song albums to understand and explain more on their contents and meanings including the Islamic values, teachings, and messages as well as the functions and purposes of the Islamic lyrics related to Islamic da’wa. Both of the lyrics have similar theme in general namely remembering Allah. This qualitative-descriptive research tries to examine the lyrics by using poetry theory through some elements of poetry, da’wa concept, and by using both content analysis and comparative analysis. The analysis shows that there are some similarities and differences between the two for their literary poetical elements and also their Islamic values, teachings, messages, and functions or purposes. The Islamic da’wa is done through English song lyrics sung by Snada to get wider audience. The analysis also shows that the lyrics are about the invitation, reminder, suggestion, and persuasion to remember, love, pray to, and believe in Allah as the source for guidance in life. The da’wa messages are addressed for both Muslims and other people in general. Lastly, through English song lyrics, they have done their Islamic da’wa movement in song music to wider audience as well as for entertainment and Islamic education.DOI: 10.15408/insaniyat.v2i2.7851

This article discusses the implementation of the Indonesian government's public policies in handling Covid-19 through a religious approach, especially through Islamic councelors. The purpose of this study is to explain the implementation of government policies in handling Covid-19 from the religious aspect carried out by Islamic councelors in Indonesia. This descriptive-analytical qualitative research uses videos published by Islamic councelors related to the handling of Covid-19 on Youtube media in April 2020 - March 2021 as the main source. Data analysis uses inductive method with the perspective of public policy implementation. The results of this study show that the implementation of the Indonesian government's policies regarding the handling of Covid-19, especially with a religious approach through Islamic councelors, has so far been carried out with various activities and socialization offline and online including through Youtube videos from various regions in Indonesia. The implementations of the Covid-19 handling policy carried out by Islamic councelors have covered basic matters based on several existing policies. The works of Islamic councelors have greatly contributed to the handling of Covid-19 in the field of religious matters, however Islamic councelors still need encouragement from the government to enhance the capacity to use social media, digital technology, media literacy, and digital literacy to reach wider benefits particularly during the pandemic.

Tulisan ini menjelaskan tindakan sosial keterlibatan perempuan dalam jaringan dan aksi terorisme di Indonesia. Tulisan ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif analitik dengan sumber utama data dari tiga perempuan yang terlibat dalam jaringan dan aksi terorisme yaitu surat dakwaan di pengadilan dan beberapa penelitian terdahulu dari jurnal dan media online dengan analisis perspektif tindakan sosial dari Marx Weber. Berdasarkan penelitian terhadap tiga perempuan pendukung ISIS dalam artikel ini menunjukan bahwa para perempuan yang terlibat terorisme memiliki beragam faktor dan motivasi untuk terlibat terorisme dan beragam peran dan fungsi dalam jaringan dan aksi terorisme mulai dari pendukung secara tidak langsung, pendukung secara langsung sampai pelaku bom bunuh diri. Dalam tindakan sosial keterlibatan perempuan dalam terorisme dipengaruhi oleh agensi dan stuktur yang melingkupinya. Dilihat dari agensinya, keterlibatan mereka bersifat aktif, sukarela, dan langsung berdasarkan kehendak pribadi untuk mencapai tujuannya. Sedangkan struktur sosial utama yang mempengaruhi keterlibatan mereka secara langsung pada jaringan dan aksi terorisme adalah komitmen baiat mereka terhadap ISIS yang sejalan dengan pemahaman keagamaan dan tujuan mereka.

This article discusses the masculinity of the female characters, Sally Alexander and Jo Robinson, in the film Misbehaviour. Thus, this article aims to analyze the masculinity within women by focusing on the characters’ analysis of Sally Alexander and Jo Robinson. The article uses a descriptive qualitative method and takes the data from the film in the form of captured scenes and dialogues. The article uses the theory of character and characterization from Boggs and Petrie to find out the masculine characteristics of Sally and Jo and also the concept of masculinity by Peter Lehman to support the argument. Based on the findings, this research shows that Sally and Jo live in a patriarchal society and establish characteristics that can be considered masculine. Sally’s ambitious, forward-thinking, well-organized, activeness, and negligence, and Jo’s daring, indiscipline, nonchalance, aggressiveness, and independence, establish their masculinity in the form of courage, heroism, and leadership, appearance, and other behaviors, for instance, smoking. Moreover, their characteristics have both merits and shortcomings. Indeed, their experience, environment, and societal factors influence their masculine characteristics

Abstract. This article discusses migration experiences of a young migrant Arab Muslim woman in a western country portrayed in a contemporary electronic (digital literature) English young adult novel entitled Alina Kanaan written by Rhonda Boldt published in 2021 by Wattpad, a social storytelling application. This research aims to explain migration experiences of a young migrant Arab Muslim woman from Palestine in America through the analysis of the main migrant character with her problems related to hybridity, ambivalence & adjustment, and abandonment & return. The result shows that the novel has many diaspora issues especially through the experiences of migration of the main female character, Alina Kaanan as a young migrant Arab Muslim migrant woman in America. She struggles to face problems and to integrate to the new society through her hybrid identity, ambivalence & adjustment mainly through three issues namely language adjustment, food & drink selection, and avoding “free sex culture,” as well as through the aspects of abandonment and return. Eventhough she receives bad threatments namely discrimination and racism toward Muslims in America from a number of Americans, she decides not to return to her homeland but to continue to live in the hostland America and pursuing her dream to be a successful singer as the winner of American Idol by maintaining her identiy as a migrant Arab Muslim woman and an American resident at the same time.
