Abstract

This research aims to find out whether there is any significant interaction between motivation and learning style on students’ English achievement in Bandar Lampung. This research is a non-experimental study with variant analysis study. The research is implemented at junior high schools in Bandar Lampung involving 430 students from schools categorized as public schoosl with high rating, private schools with high rating, public schools with lower rating, and private schools with lower rating. The variables consisting of one dependent variable, that is the students’ English Achievement (Y), two independent variables: motivation (X1) and learning styles (X2), and one intervention variable:  types of school (Z1)Data for students’ English achievement were taken by giving a set of test in which validity and reliability are tested. Data for motivation and learning styles were taken from students’ reponses to multiple choice questionnaire each consisting of 40 questions.The results of the analysis show: a) there is no significant interaction between motivation and learning styles on students’ English Achievement. This means that the combination of motivation and learning styles cannot distinguish between high achieving students and the lower ones. b). Learning styles have significant influence on students’ English achievement. Students with different learning styles have different English achievement. c). Motivation does not have significant influence on students’ English achievement. Students with different motivation did not have different result of English achievement.d) Types of school have a significant effect on the students’ English achievement

Abstract

The objective of this research were to know how discussion meeting technique can give an effect to students’ motivation, and confidence in the class, and to see student improvement of speaking in experiencing discussion meeting technique. This technique used as an effort to help the students to improve their speaking ability. Discussion meeting technique made the students have motivation and more confidence to improve the students’ speaking ability. In this research, the researcher used the descriptive qualitative method. This kind of method was used to feel the experience the real world, and also to know people’s point of view of a certain phenomenon. It was also used to obtain the truthful, precise, and well-organized explanation about students’ speaking in experiencing discussion meeting of speaking class. The research was done at SMAN 1 Bangkunat Belimbing that consisted of twenty students. To gather the data, the researcher did the observation and distributed the questionnaire at the end of her observation. The data was analyzed by combining the result of observation and questionnaire in several paragraphs. The result of this research showed that when firstly the researcher implemented this technique, student felt confused of what they should do in the class, but finally they are able to follow the instruction from the researcher. So, the class in the end ran successfully. From the questionnaire result also showed mostly positive feedback in experiencing discussion meeting technique. So, the improvement of students’ speaking ability was better than before. The combination of those two instruments is that discussion meeting technique is able to facilitate them in speaking class. They mostly agreed this technique could make them have motivation and more confidence in this class and could help them in improving their skill; also it could awake them that they need to be more responsible of their own learning in the class.

Abstract

There were problems that the researcher found in the teaching and learning process of English Structure class of Bandar Lampung University related to the learners’ assumption, method, and medium used. Based on the problems found in English Structure class of Bandar Lampung University, the writer chose the media using Kahoot! as a solution.  Kahoot! is one of techniques that can can be applied to the learners which is expected to affect the classroom dynamics and facilitate the learning process. The objectives of this research are to know how aplication of kahoot! Affect classroom dynamics and facilitating learning prices. The research method used in this research was classroom action research. One of the functions of classroom action research is to find the learners’ main problem and give solution for the problem. The research was carried out in two cycles. Every cycle include plan, action, observation, and reflection. The data of the research were qualitative. The qualitative data obtained by observing the teaching and learning process and interviewing the learners of Structure I class. The data were also obtained by giving questionnaire to support the data. Based on the observation in the classroom and interview the learners, they showed a great enthusiasm even though some problems appeared because of the capacity of internet connection. When observation was carried out, the learners enjoyed their activities using Kahoot! in the classroom. The atmosphere in the classroom was positive where they felt comfortable and relaxed to communicate with other learners and also with the researcher. It also can be seen from the result of the questionnaire.  The result of the research showed that the application of Kahoot! affected the classroom dynamics and facilitated the learning process in the teaching and learning activity. The researcher also expects that Kahoot! can assist English teacher in preparing interesting learning material and making it as alternative in creative learning.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to know what is the most difficult aspect that the students encounter in speaking, and to see what are the causes in students’ difficulties that face the students while they are speaking English.In this research, I used the descriptive qualitative method. The kind of method was used the feel the experience the real world, and also to know people’s points of view of a certain phenomena. It was also used to obtain the truthful, presice, and well-organized explanation about students’ dificulties in speaking English. This reserach was done at grade X.1 of SMA Persada Bandar Lampung that consisted of 22 students. To gather the data, I did observation, gave questionnaire, and interview. The data was analyzed by combining the results of observation, questionnaire, and interview in some table, graphic, and also pharagraph.The results of this research showed that there ase some difficulties that the students faced when spoke English in the class, from the questionnaire result also showed mostly positif and negatif feedbacks that were so hard for them to speak English. The combination of those three instruments is able to be the way to know what are the students’ problems that were so hard for them to speak English.

Abstract

In this modern era, people can easily get information from anywhere and anytime. People can also express their opinions and thoughts about a topic, for example about jokes. There are so many genres or types of jokes, one of them is dark jokes. Dark joke is a form of humor involving a twist or joke making the joke seen as offensive, harsh, horrid. Because of that, some people argue that dark jokes should not be used in daily life. The aim of this research is to analyze the students’ perception about using dark jokes in daily conversation English Department of Universitas Bandar Lampung and analyze some aspects of perception that affect students’ perception about using dark jokes in daily conversation. This research used case study method. The research was done at English Education Study Program Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Universitas Bandar Lampung in all semester. Data gathering was done by doing questionnaire and interview to nine students. The data was analyzed by combining the result from the questionnaire and interview. The results of this research elucidated that they have mix perception towards dark joke and using it in daily conversation. Some of them concur and some of them disagree that dark joke can be used in daily conversation.

Abstract

Figurative language is a non-literal meaning of sentences or words in order to make attractive languages in written text based on the theory of Aristotle Therefore, this research aims to analyze what kinds of figurative language in Halsey’s selected song which are Colors, The Feeling, Without Me, Haunting, Ghost, Walls Could Talk, and Nightmare. Moreover, the contextual meaning of the selected song’s lyrics is analyzed based on the theory of Halliday. Contextual meaning has three types which are field, tenor, and mode by observing through reading the lyrics from genius.com. The Field and Mode of the songs refer to the culture of the composer lived in, and Tenor is symbol of participation of life objects. The result is in classified and percentage the data. Thus, it concluded and calculated that the seven selected songs of Halsey have 2 items or 13% of allegory, 1 or 6% of conceit, 5 or 31% of hyperbole, 4 or 25% of irony, 2 or 13% of litotes, 8 or 20% of metaphor, 2 or 13% of onomatopoeia, 4 or 25% of personification, 6 or 38% of rhetorical question, 11 or 69% of simile, and 3 or 9% of symbol. The result of this study will be able to give contribution to the readers who are interested in learning and understanding or interpreting those lyrics.

Abstract

In the development of technology, reading can be obtained both from books and other media like handysmartphones. One application that can be used as a reading source, social and entertainment medium atonce is Wattpad application since Wattpad is not only as simple as reading platform but it also facilitatesthe readers to directly connect with other readers and their favorite writers. Wattpad may encourage thetaste of reading especially extensive reading or reading for pleasure. Therefore, Wattpad ismultifunctional medium that may enhance educational performance, social engagement, and personaldevelopment. This research aimed to explore the students’ perception on Wattpad in reading. The sampleof this research was all students of English Department of Universitas Bandar Lampung who usedWattpad as the reading platform. They are from first until thirteenth semester. This research appliedqualitative design with descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected through two instruments:questionnaire and interview. The result indicated that most students have positive perceptions on Wattpadin reading especially in enhancing their vocabulary.
