Abstract

Online discussion forum is well-known in educational technology development especially in blended learning because it supports the traditional face to face (f2f) classroom. Moreover, online discussion forum is familiar as the leading of critical thinking process. Therefore, this present study is intended to analyze the influence of critical thinking to help improving speaking skill of the first semester students in Universitas Bandar Lampung. To achieve the goal, online discussion forum is provided to promote critical thinking through Schoology platform. A qualitative approach is employed to analyze the data. Observation, interview, and questionnaire are conducted to see the influence of critical thinking process during online discussion forum, and the influence of critical thinking to improve students? speaking skill. The finding indicates that the use of online discussion forum can promote students? critical thinking, and the students can perform better in the f2f classroom

Abstract

This research aimed at implementing flipped classroom method by using Schoology in speaking class. The participants of this research are the second semester of English Education Study Program in UBL who took speaking II class. The instruments are the observation and questionnaire. So the data of the research are gathered by doing the observation and giving questionnaire about opinion about both session (online and offline) which are made based on the observation data to the students. Result of the research showed that the students became more active, and also their achievement is better after experiencing in both sessions.

Abstract

This study aims to make instructional materials for blended learning suitable for implementation in Speaking class. The blended learning will combine face to face method with LMS-Schoology as the media for web-based learning. The participants of this research are the second semester of English Education Study Program in UBL who took speaking 2 subjects. The result of the research showed that the instructional materials for blended learning method in speaking 2 classes are able to facilitate students learning process and increase their activeness in learning.

Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the important skills must be mastered to acquire the English. Therefore the purpose of this research is to observe the use of the combination of anagram and keywords in improving students vocabulary mastery at tenth grade of Science 1 of SMA Al-Azhar 3 Bandar Lampung. The researcher conducted the students at tenth grade of science 1 of SMA Al-Azhar 3 Bandar Lampung that consist of 43 students.The researcher used the qualitative and quantitative design. The researcher did the research in six meetings consisted of two meetings of the preliminary study, four meetings of the implementation of the combination of anagram and keywords. In the preliminary study, it was found that many students are poor of the English vocabulary. They were difficult to catch the teachers instruction when the teacher spoke in English. The researcher used the instruments; observation checklist, video recorder and students’ vocabulary test to gather the data. Then, in the final mean score got the result was 81.74 of 43 students. There were 84 % of 43 students who could pass the minimum score 80. So, based on the result, it explained after the implementation of the combination of anagram and keywords, the students got the good improvement in the vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This research is based on the researcher’s pre-survey on the implementation of reading stories towards children. Young children have an extraordinary ability to record what they have heard. The purpose is also to increase their intelligence and to prepare the children for language learning before they are ready to study at school. During the reading activity, the mothers do not force the children to do any activity. They just observed the children’s development while reading activities and help them increase their language acquisition. The aims of this research are to see the children’s language acquisition process, to identify how storybook is being read by the parents, and also to know the advantages of reading story to young children. Language development is one of the indicators of overall development for children's cognitive ability related to their success in their study. The result showed that reading stories to children can help parents to prepare their children before they are ready to study at school. Reading story to children with bilingual books also increases children’s language acquisition because during the reading activity they got some new vocabularies related to the story. The result showed that the children have different methods and strategies in learning from the story. During the reading process, the mother gives some definition related to the story and read with clear intonation and gestures.

Abstract

This research is based on the researcher’s survey. Most of the students are lack of motivation to write narrative text in their class. It happened because the teachers did not use fun method. Some journals also mentioned that senior high school students have difficulties in writing narrative text because the teachers’ method is not impressive. The researcher chose a method called ‘estafet’ method to overcome the problem. This research is aimed how does the ‘estafet’ method improve students’ narrative writing skill, and to know How is the students’ achievement in writing class through ‘estafet’ method. The sample of this research is SMA Persada students. The data were collected through three stages: observation, questionnaire, and test. The test was performed in the group as a complementary component.  The result showed that, ‘estafet’ method can improve the students’ achievement in writing narrative text and the ‘estafet’ method can improve students’ narrative writing skill but the teacher must monitor the students in the class because some students feel confuse about the generic structure of narrative text, so that the teacher must explain again about the generic structure of the narrative text.

Abstract

This research aimed to know how role play in improving the students’ vocabulary mastery at SMA Persada Bandar Lampung. Role play is applied in order to persuade the students to create connection between vocabularies, understanding and the content that is studied by them. This research will use qualitative research. The researcher would understand that world from the perspective of the people in that place; add the perspective from the student opinion. The researcher would be done at grade eleven of Persada Senior High School Bandar Lampung. The data would be gathered by observing the students in the class, providing them questionnaire in the end of the researcher study. The result from combination between two instruments above was in the form of table and it was explained by some sentence that interpreted the table. The result indicated that the role play technique gave the improvement for the students especially in improving their vocabulary mastery. And their pronunciation better than before, therefore it is recommended that the students are required to improve their vocabulary as well as understanding through using role play technique. The result showed that role play technique was effective to improve the students’ vocabulary. Besides, the technique  could also enhance  their interest and confidence in their English study.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to know how flipped classroom can give an effect to students’ activeness in the class, and to see students’ achievement in experiencing flipped classroom method. In this research, I used the descriptive qualitative method. The kind of method was used to feel the experience the real world, and also to know people’s point of view of a certain phenomenon. It was also used to obtain the truthful, precise, and well-organized explanation about students’ activeness and students’ achievement in experiencing flipped writing class. The research was done at Writing III class of English Education Study Program of Teaching and Training Education of Universitas Bandar Lampung that consisted of twenty-four students. The data were gathered by observation and questionnaire, and those were also analysed by combining the result of observation and questionnaire in several paragraphs. The result of this research showed that when this method firstly implemented, students felt confused of what they should do in the class, but the class in the end ran successfully. From the questionnaire result also showed mostly positive feedbacks in experiencing flipped method, but there are also some negative feedbacks are given in it. The combination of those two instruments is that flipped classroom method is able to facilitate them in writing class. They mostly agreed this method could make them more interested in this class, and it could help them in improving their skills, also it could awake them that they need to be more responsible of their own learning in the class.

Abstract

Computer has been widely use in all over the world. The functions of computer and modern technologies have influenced many educational institutions in developing networking language teaching learning processes that link participants from any places to join such learning processes. This situation of language learning is called distance language learning. It leads the participants or learners to be independence and responsible to their learning process, their self-assessment, self-actualization, and self-evaluation that bring them to the practices of promoting the autonomy. Thus, this paper tries to dig out how distance language learning influences language learning processes in promoting learners’ autonomy.

Abstract

In this modern era, people can easily get information from anywhere and anytime. People can also express their opinions and thoughts about a topic, for example about jokes. There are so many genres or types of jokes, one of them is dark jokes. Dark joke is a form of humor involving a twist or joke making the joke seen as offensive, harsh, horrid. Because of that, some people argue that dark jokes should not be used in daily life. The aim of this research is to analyze the students’ perception about using dark jokes in daily conversation English Department of Universitas Bandar Lampung and analyze some aspects of perception that affect students’ perception about using dark jokes in daily conversation. This research used case study method. The research was done at English Education Study Program Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Universitas Bandar Lampung in all semester. Data gathering was done by doing questionnaire and interview to nine students. The data was analyzed by combining the result from the questionnaire and interview. The results of this research elucidated that they have mix perception towards dark joke and using it in daily conversation. Some of them concur and some of them disagree that dark joke can be used in daily conversation.
