Abstract

Indonesia is a tropical country with high sun exposure. High sun exposure can cause several problems with the skin, ranging from reddish skin, pigmentation, and even for a long time can cause cancer risk. One way to reduce the negative impact of sun exposure by using sunscreen. Telang flowers are rich in bioactive compounds such as phenolic compounds, especially flavonoids, which have the potential to be used as sunscreens. This study aims to determine the optimal concentration of telang flower extract on sunscreen cream based on physical properties and SPF values.Telang flowers are extracted macerated using 70% ethanol, then the obtained Telang flower extract (EBT) is formulated into a sunscreen cream with various concentrations. Various EBT concentrations on sunscreen creams were tested for physical stability and their effectiveness based on SPF values. The data obtained were analyzed statistically by ANOVA using the T-test with a confidence level of 95%. From this study, the optimum concentration of telang flower extract was found to be 5% contained in Formula III sunscreen cream.

Abstract

Young coconut coir contains flavonoid compounds, phenols, tannins and saponins. The ethanol extract of young coconut coir was studied to have good antibacterial activity. This study aimed to see the inhibitory activity of ethanol extract compared fractions of young coconut coir ethanol extract in inhibiting Escherichia coli ESBL (Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamase) bacteria. Young coconut coir of extracted using 95% ethanol solvent of maceration method and patition using n-hexane and ethyl acetate solvent. Antibacterial activities using the diffusion method with concentrations of 25%, 50% and 75%. The negative control used DMSO 10%, while positve control used was chloramphenikol. Ethanol extract and fractions of ethanol extract of young coconut coir inhibited Escherichia coli ESBL bacteria. The largest radical inhibition zone was found in the ethyl acetate fraction with a concentration of 75% at 10.9 mm.

Abstract

The ethanol extract of beetroot leaves contains high levels of phenolic and flavonoid compounds, making it potentially beneficial as an antioxidant. However, the ethanol extract of beetroot leaves has a disadvantage as it is still mixed with other components that are not necessary, limiting its formulation development. In relation to this, the purpose of this research is to eliminate unwanted compounds as antioxidants and to observe the impact of purification on the antioxidant activity and total flavonoid content of the extract. The production of purified extract involves fractionating the suspension of beetroot leaf extract using solvents with different polarities, namely n-hexane and ethyl acetate, in sequence. Antioxidant activity tests are conducted on Ethanol Extract of Beetroot Leaves (EEDUB), Purified Extract of Beetroot Leaves (ETDUB), and quercetin as a positive control. Antioxidant activity is assessed using 2,2-Diphenyl-1-Picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). The total flavonoid content of EEDUB and ETDUB is determined with a spectrophotometer using AlCl3. The antioxidant activity of EEDUB is indicated by an IC50 value of 157.87 µg/mL, while ETDUB has an IC50 value of 129.60 µg/mL. The total flavonoid content of EEDUB is 2.82% ± 0.85 QE, and for ETDUB, it is 2.90% ± 1.16 QE. The research results show that ETDUB has a higher flavonoid content and antioxidant activity compared to EEDUB. This also indicates that the purification process of the beetroot leaf extract has not reached its maximum effectiveness.

Abstract

One of the most developed pharmaceutical preparations for paracetamol is a syrup. An important additional substance required in the formulation of the syrup is a coloring agent. Telang flower (Clitoria ternatea) is one of the plants that has been proved to contain anthocyanins. Anthocyanin is a compound which can be used as a coloring agent. Thus, it is important to further explore telang flower’s potential as a natural coloring agent in paracetamol syrup preparation. This research was started with the extraction of the dye or anthocyanin content in the telang flower. The extraction was performed by ethanol with maceration method. Paracetamol syrups were prepared in four different formulations (F1, F2, F3, and F4). F1, F2, and F3 contained three increased concentrations of telang extract of 0.25%, 0.5% and 1.0%, respectively, while F4 was added with the synthetic food coloring agent, as a control. Each formula was evaluated based on its physical properties parameters including organoleptic observation, pH, density viscosity, and color stability test using spectrophotometry. The results of organoleptic, pH, density viscosity, and color stability parameters showed that telang extract with the concentration of 0.25% and 1% possessed more stable result than 0,5% concentration in the paracetamol syrup preparations.
