Abstract

During new order period, priority was given to the hi-tech industry sector and less favorable to the agricultural sector. Many researchers pointed out that.the previous policy as the main cause of the current big numbers of peasant farmers.Poor farmers responsed to the innovation differently, Tbe response was affected by several factors. To find out the response, deeper assessment was carried out from August to October 2004 in Ternanggung District. Peasant farmers, coming from the medium and high land, were interviewed using structural questionnaire. Aside of primary data, secondary data was gathered from related institutions. Research showed that high land peasant farmers were more passive than medium land farmers, High land farmers had less ability on capital improvement, risk-averse to the new program, discouraged to change fanning practices, and their expertise improvement effortwas less than those of medium land farmers. Factors affecting were low education attainment and less infrastructure supports (i.e. transportation.informauon, formal banking institution). Up to the end of the new order period, KUT!Kredit Usahatani (Farming Credit) was the only source of formal.credit for farmers, Along with the Banking regulation, KUT was changed to KKP/Kredit Ketahanan Pangan (Food Security Credit). However, the new scheme credit was not fully responded either.

Tobacco showed the highest revenue (Rp. 2,505 millions/household), even though also needed the highest production cost (Rp. 1,586 millions/household). In medium land, estate crops were in the fourth placed (5%) after livestock (9%), forestry (8%), and horticulture crops (6%). Dominant commodities were coffee, coconut, and clove. Abstract

Prices transmission study between paddy grain and rice aimed to find out whether the rice price formation due to the price shock in paddy grain was symetric or asymetric. Weekly data of paddy grain and rice prices from Grobogan, Pati, and Wonogiri Districts, as paddy production center and Semarang as rice demand area, were analyzed. Data were taken from Central Java Food Crops Services and covering a period from January 2000 to April 2003. Results showed that paddy grain and rice prices had the same fluctuation pattern. Paddy grain price shock tend to be transmited smoothly to rice price in paddy production center, but markets respond increasing shock faster than decreasing shock. Asymetric information was mostly found in Semarang City, in which rice price moved diverse from paddy grain price shock in Grobogan, Pati, and Wonogiri Districts

Abstract

In the beef cattle business, feed is the second largest cost component after feeder purchases. To increase the efficiency of feed use and business efficiency, the complete fermented feed was introduced at the beef cattle production center in Sumberejo Village, Ngablak District, Magelang Regency. The complete feed consists of forage, rice bran, minerals, molasses, and salt, fermented with local microorganisms (MOL) made from the beef rumen. Feed was given to 5 beef cattle breeders and compared with the breeders' feed. The financial feasibility of the two feeding modes was compared. The results of the analysis show that complete fermented feed can increase daily body weight gain (PBBH) from 0.48 to 1.16 kg, shorten the fattening period from 13.5 months to 11 months, reduce the amount and cost of feed needed, reduce labor requirements. . , as well as increasing farmers' income. If all costs are taken into account, the fattening of livestock using the farmer's feed system which previously lost (R / C = 0.994) becomes profitable with complete fermented feed (R / C = 1.374).
