Abstract

Tuberculosis remains a major global health problem and ranks as the second leading cause of death from infectious disease worldwide. Countries devote their budgets to overcome the tuberculosis problem. An efficient use of these budgets will arguably reduce the number of tuberculosis cases and eventually give a positive impact to the economy. This paper aims it aims to estimate the technical efficiency scores of tuberculosis funds on high-burden countries by using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method. Further, this study analyzes other environmental factors that are crucial to increase the efficiency scores by using Tobit method. DEA shows that some countries exhibit high efficiency scores while others exhibit low efficiency scores. It also informs how countries use funds to maximize their results. Meanwhile, the Tobit estimation shows that taxing cigarettes and committing budgets to control tobaccos have positive marginal effects on technical efficiency scores.

Abstract

With 194,109 cases on 6th September 2020, Indonesia is one of the most infected countries of COVID-19. The daily total number of new confirmed COVID-19 cases passed the 3,000 mark for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, with 3,003 and 3,308 new cases reported on 28 and 29 August, respectively. Jakarta and East Java mainly contributed to the surge, while several provinces like West Java, North Sumatera, and East Kalimantan emerged as new hotspots. With the high growing case number, this research seeks to analyze the linkages between the regional economic situations and each COVID 19 cases in Indonesia. This research analyzes the effect of regional economic through the number of poverties in urban and rural areas, the hotel room occupancy rate, the Gini Ratio in both urban and rural areas. The cross section data variables are selected from the data in 2020 within 34 provinces in Indonesia from Badan Pusat Statistika Indonesia and Gugus Tugas Percepatan Penanganan COVID-19 Indonesia. This paper also plot and analyze some province level data in 2019. The analysis indicates that poverty in rural and urban areas, hotel room occupancy rate, and Gini Ratio in Urban Area have positive and significant impact on the total COVID-19 cases. The plot analysis show that population density, percentage of households in urban slum, percentage of household frequency of using used water for other purposes have positive relation with transmission of COVID-19 in Indonesia. Until 6th September 2020, the transmission of COVID-19 in Indonesia is increasing rapidly. In regards of this situation, the government should have imposed stricter regulations in the mandatory mask in public spaces, social distancing, and other preventive measures in all provinces in Indonesia.

Abstract

Kasus Covid-19 menimbulkan dampak negatif terhadap berbagai aspek kehidupan. World Health Organization (WHO) menghimbau masyarakat untuk melakukan jaga jarak fisik.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) and poverty using panel data of five ASEAN upper and lower middle-income countries for 28 years. The time series data period selected in this study is from 1990 until 2018. The five countries selected to be investigated in this research are presumed as the Tiger Cub Economies, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines. This study conducted the Feasible Generalized least Square (FGLS) methods to analyze the statistical panel data. The result from this analysis indicates that foreign direct investment has a negative and significant impact on poverty in five ASEAN countries. Other important results from this study showed that the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), credit provided by the financial sector as the proxy of financial development, and education variables contribute significantly to lower poverty incidence. Policies that focus on attracting foreign direct investment, improving financial development, and support a higher level of education have the potential to reduce poverty in the selected five ASEAN countries.

Abstract

The world economy is increasingly more globalized and Global Value Chains (GVCs) played a greater role in international trade and production which provides opportunities for economic growth and development. This paper examines the linkages between economic freedom and Global Value Chains. The developing nations in Asia need to have the ability to integrate themselves in GVCs in order to gain access to higher-value activities in GVCs. The objective of this study is to see the impact of the Economic Freedom Index, Female Labor Force Participation Rate and the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) in Asian countries considered as developing economies by the IMF on the countries’ position in GVCs measured using value-added indicators. The presence of the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) variable can indicate the role of government, consistency of policies, infrastructure and institutional formation, which is correlated in the level of Economic Freedom of developing nations.  This paper uses the Data Panel regression model consisting of multiple indicators of all the variables used from 25 developing countries in Asia from 2009 to 2017. Analysis indicates that the variables have an overall positive relationship with the level of integration of the countries into GVCs.

Abstract

Tobacco use remains one of Indonesia’s significant public health burdens, and the rapid growth of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) introduces new regulatory challenges. Data from the 2018 Basic Health Research Survey (Riset Kesehatan Dasar; RISKESDAS) show that adolescent e-cigarette use increased sharply from 1.2% in 2016 to 10.9% in 2018. Drawing on consumer behaviour theory and the diffusion of innovations framework, this study examines how household consumption, income inequality, poverty, unemployment, and demographic factors influence e-cigarette uptake in Indonesia. Using nationally representative data from the 2023 National Socio-Economic Survey (Survei Sosial Ekonomi Nasional; SUSENAS), this study applies logistic regression and accounts for clustering at the provincial level. The results indicate that higher household consumption significantly increases the likelihood of e-cigarette use. Income inequality exhibits a strong positive association, suggesting diffusion driven by more affluent adopters, whereas unemployment and poverty show negative but statistically insignificant effects. E-cigarette adoption remains concentrated among men and urban residents. Overall, the findings indicate that the diffusion of e-cigarettes in Indonesia reflects underlying socioeconomic disparities. These results underscore the importance of policies addressing affordability and marketing practices—such as excise taxation, price floors, and integrated regulatory frameworks—to mitigate the expansion of nicotine-related inequalities and Indonesia’s existing tobacco burden.
