Abstract

Speaking adalah salah satu dari empat keterampilan berbahasa Inggris yang penting untuk dikuasai utamanya di abad 21. Untuk memiliki keterampilan speaking yang baik, diperlukan strategi belajar yang sesuai. SMA Negeri 2 Situbondo, bekerja sama dengan Fakultas Sastra Universitas Abdurachman Saleh Situbond, membentuk program Kampung Bahasa (KABAS) yang ditujukan untuk membantu siswa-siswa SMA di Situbondo meningkatkan keterampilan berbahasa Inggris khususnya keterampilan speaking. Metode yang dipilih untuk kegiatan ini adalah pendampingan rutin dengan menerapkan strategi kelompok diskusi kecil. Strategi ini diharapkan mampu membantu siswa-siswa peserta KABAS meningkatkan keterampilan speaking mereka. Setelah proses pendampingan selama kurang lebih 3 (tiga) bulan, terdapat peningkatan keterampilan speaking siswa. Peningkatan ini mencakup aspek isi, pengucapan, tata bahasa, intonasi, kosakata, dan kelancaran dalam berbicara. Peningkatan yang ada dihasilkan dari proses diskusi antar anggota kelompok. Strategi diskusi kelompok kecil terbukti efektif membantu siswa memberi masukan untuk memeprbaiki kualitas penampilan siswa saat praktik berbicara. Selain itu, strategi kelompok diskusi kecil juga melatih siswa berani berbicara dengan percaya diri, bertukar pendapat, dan menghargai orang lain. Namun, hasil ini akan lebih maksimal jika saat pemberian materi tutor memberikan contoh yang cukup dan sesuai dengan kemampuan siswa sehingga siswa memiliki pemahaman yang cukup tentang materi terkait sebelum praktik speaking.

Abstract

There were so many connotative meaning could be found in Maher Zain’s song lyrics. This research gained the data through identifying the words or phrases on the lyrics in six Maher Zain’s songs and were analyzed based on Leech’s theory. The data were analyzed qualitatively, while the techniques of data collection are done by downloading the song and the lyrics, listening the song, reading the lyrics and watching the videos. Then, reducing the data, displaying the data, verifying the data and making the conclusion were done in analyzing the data. The result of the study described words/phrases containing types of connotative meaning. There were twenty-four data found in this research; sixteen data contained positive connotations, four data contained neutral connotations, and four data contained negative connotations. The researchers expected the next researchers to study the types of connotative meaning in other songs from Maher Zain in this album. The researchers also expected the next researchers to identify the types of connotations by using different relevant theory.

Abstract

It is essential to pay attention to the use of politeness strategies in communication, especially if the speaker and listener come from different cultures. People and cultures have been successfully visualized by Disney Pixar in their films that often expose their audiences to different cultural backgrounds of their characters. This research aimed at analyzing the politeness strategies used by the main character in a Disney Pixar animated adventure film Onward. The data in this descriptive qualitative research were analyzed by using the theories of politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987). The results indicate that Ian Lightfoot, the main character, uses a lot of bald-on-record strategies in communicating. This is closely related to the theme of the film in which there are many scenes showing emergencies that require quick action and orders for the safety of the main characters. In addition to that, the most-frequent-used politeness strategies done does not necessarily imply emotional closeness between speakers. The linguistic choices made by the main character were affected by the socio-cultural aspects formed in his society.

Abstract

Training in Developing Instructional Videos for teachers at MTs Nurul Huda Paowan. During the pandemic, the learning process at MTS Nurul Huda experienced a decline in the quality of learning. This is because the learning system has changed from conventional to online. The limited online learning facilities owned by students make teachers at MTs Nurul Huda not optimal in carrying out learning. The use of learning media for online learning has never been carried out because teachers did not have a good understanding of teaching media and lack the skills to make instructional videos as appropriate teaching media during the pandemic. Therefore, we tried to offer solutions to overcome these problems by providing training on making learning videos using smartphones for MTS teachers Nurul Huda. The implementation of this activity was carried out for approximately a month with the following details: counseling, two training activities, and evaluation. This training utilized the Kinemaster application as an instructional video maker tool for teachers. The evaluation was carried out in two ways, with participants and with team members of the activity. The result of this activity is an increase in teachers' understanding of the importance of teaching media which is marked by their high interest and enthusiasm during the training. In addition, this activity also resulted in an increase in the quality and professionalism of teachers which was marked by the instructional videos they produced.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the types and the functions of illocutionary acts performed by Jenna Ortega in several of her interviews. The data sources used in this descriptive qualitative research are several videos of Jenna Ortega's interviews in 2022 on YouTube. This study uses the theory of Searle (1969) to determine the types of illocutionary act and Yule's theory (1996) to determine the functions of the illocutionary act performed. The results of this study indicate that there are three types of illocutionary acts performed by Jenna Ortega in some of her interviews, they are: assertive, commissive, and expressive. In this study, it was found that assertive was the most frequently used type of illocutionary act and conveying information as the most frequently appeared function of illocutionary act in some of Jenna Ortega's interviews in 2022.
