Abstract

Oyster  mushroom (Pleuroius ostreatus) has been cultivated on five sawdust  media  of  five wood  species, i.e. durian (Durio  zibethinus Murr.),  jeungjing  (Albizia  falcataria  (L.)  Fosb.).  manii (Maesopsis eminii Engl.),  rubber  (Hevea brasiliensis Muell.  Arg.)  and  coconut   (Cocos  nucifera  L.). The  composition  of  the  media  was 100  % saw dust, 80 % sawdust + 20 % rice  bran,  99.5 % sawdust  +  0.5 % lime,  99 % sawdust + 0.5 % lime + 0.5 % trisuperphosphate    (TSP),  and 97.5 % sawdust + 0.5 % lime  +  0.5 %  TSP + 1.5 % gypsum.  Each  media was mixed  with sufficient distilled water. The  media  was allowed to cool after  autoclave  sterilization   before  being  inoculated   with  pure  culture  of  the  mushroom.   The  mature  mushroom was harvested  daily  after  the growth  of  fruiting  body. The highest  yield  was obtained  from Rubber wood  (129.8 g per 600  g media).  The  beat composition was obtained from  sawdust  80  % mixed  with  rice bran 20  % (103.17 g per  600  g media). The  higher  Biological  efficiency  during  the four  month observation were  obtained  from  media  containing  sawdu1t 80  % mixed  with  rice bran  20 %, i.e. rubber (66.73 %),   durian  148.15  %), coconut (28.12 %),  and  manii  (22.38 %).

Abstract

One  hundred   fifty   pieces  of  wood  consisting  of  15 species  were randomly   arranged in form  of  a raft and  floated at Rambut and Puntung  Java Islands seashore. The size of the wood  specimens  is 2,5 cm x 5 cm x 30 cm.                      The  samples  were  tested  against  two  principal  family of  marine  borers,   i.e.   teredinids  and pholads  and  evaluated after three  months. The  results  reveal that  most  of  the  tested  woods  were severely  attacked  by  teredinids,  except   Heritiera  littoralis, Heritiera javanica, Diospyros celebica, and  Eucalyptus platyphylla, but  these  species  were severely  attacked by pholads.  The infestation has two distinct  types,  characterited by its structure  and pattern  of  wood  boring

Abstract

Wood plastic  composite   samples  made,  from  rubber  wood  (Hevea brasilliensis  Muell.  Arg.)  were tested  for durability againts  Shizophyllum commune Fr,  Pycnoporus sanguineus (Fr.) Karst  and  Dacryopinax  spathularia   (Schw.)  Mart,  fungi. The  results  shows  that   rubber  wood  plastic  composite   is not  resistance  againts  the above  three  wood  destroying   fungus.

Abstract

Survey on wood-destroying organisms attacking people's houses was carried out at Padalarang (Bandung district), Cibadak (Sukabumi districtj, and Pacet (Cianjur district). Data collection were done by interviewing and filling-out questionaire forms. Result of the investigation indicated that local timber and bamboo are used largely for house components. Wood destroying organisms found attacking the components are rotting fungi, subterranean termites, dry-wood termites, and powder post-beetles.

Abstract

Ear mushroom (Auricularia  polytrica)  was cultivated on logs of eight wood species i.e.  hamerang (Ficus grossularoides  Burn. f.), jeungjing (Albizia falcataria  (L.)  Fosb.), kihuut (Vernonia arborea  Ham.),  kipiit  (Maesa ramentacea  Wall.), manii (Maesopsis eminii Engl.),  sehang (Ficus padana Burn. f.), seuseureuhan  (Piper aduncum  L.)  and teureup (Artocarpus  elastica Reinw. ). The logs were kept slanted on an angle of  ± 60° with bamboo  supports  in shady site under trees at Gunung  Bunder,  Bogor. The mature mushroom  was harvested  every day after  the growth  of  the fruiting body.   The logs start producing fungus two months after inoculation. The highest harvested  was obtained  at fourth   month  of observation.  The higher total yield of ear mushroom  during  the six months observation  was obtained from  seuseureuhan  log (59.537 kg), sehang (28.08 kg), manii (16.056 kg) and hamerang log (14.838 kg) per m3 of log. The lower total yield  was obtained from  kipiit  log (11.2 kg), kihuut  (9.813 kg), jeungjing  (4.526 kg) and teureup (2.441 kg) per  m3 of log.

Abstract

One hundred  and  twenty   five pieces  of  wood  from  five  species had been exposed  to Marine Borers in five different locations.  The test sites chosen  were around  Gulf of Jakarta,  i.e.  about  3 km  off  shore in Mauk, Mauk estuary,  Tanjung Pasir shore,  Rambut  Island  and Puntung  Java Island. The  result shows  that  at  the sea site  where the salinity  is relatively stable around  29‰  -   30‰  and at the Rambut  and Puntung Java Islands  30‰  -   34‰, all of  the  wood  tested  are badly  attacked by Marine Borers.  The result also shows  that  at  the  Mauk  estuary  and  Tanjung  Pasir shore  where  the salinity  5°/oo  -  30°/oo, damage  is only  small

Abstract

In  Indonesia  Heterobostrychus  aequalis  Wat is  a large size powder  post  beetle.  This species very commonly attacks highly  stachy  wood,  the  main  reason  why   they  are  used  in  this  experiment. In  this research pulai wood  (Alstonia  scholaris R.Br)  has been used for sample,  dried at temperature levels for 40°C, 60oC, 90oC, 100oC, 120oC, 150oC, 200oC and ambien air temperature.  On each side  of  wood  samples  ten  holes  were made  with  dimension  of 1,5 cm x 5 cm x 7 cm. Into  the hole larvaes of 1,5  month  old were placed.  The observations  were made  after  six  week  period. The result showed  that wood  dried on temperature  40°C could  reduce  the starch of about  9,08% so that  intensity of insect's  attack  were lower (score 44,2). High starch  content   was found  in the  wood  dried  at  temperature 200°C, that is 17,94%. In  this  sample  the  intensity   of  the  attack was higher,  that  scale  at  scoring.

Abstract

This paper is  dealing with  the  influence  of drying  methods  to feeding  activity  and survival of Cryptotermes  cynoce- phalus   drywood  termite.  The  result  shows   that   drying   methods  have  an  effect on  feeding activity  and  survival of C.  cynocephalus.   Besides  the  drying   methods,  wood  species  has also  an  effect   on  such  both  factor. The  oven method is  more  advantageorus than  desicator  method   which  is  more  selective  and more practice.
