Abstract

This report  deals with the  laboratory  tests  on  the  properties of  particle board made  from  coconut  wood  and from  coconut wood with  hardwood bonded by urea formaldehyde. The  tests include board density, moisture  content, water absorption, thickness swelling and bending  strength. The  result  reveals that physical and  mechanical  properties of  particle boards  made  from  coconut wood  conform with FAO Standard.  The  properties  of  particle boards  made  from   coconut  wood mixture  with  hardwood in  the proportion of  1 : 1 which conform the  FAO  Standard are limited to density and water absorption.

Abstract

The  experiment  result  of  using  sago  waste  for particleboard   is reported  in this paper.   The experiment  covers  the process   of   making   particleboard    with   several  raw  material  compositions    and   testing   their  physical   and  mechanical properties.   The  particleboard   is bonded   with  urea formaldehyde    resin with  the dimension   of  30 cm x  30 cm  x  1,5 cm,The  results  indicate  that  most  of  the physical  properties  of particleboard   meet  Indonesian  or FAO standards,  while many   of  mechanical  properties   do  not  meet  those  standards.  Veneer   lamination   improves  the  bending  strength  and  the addition   of  sago  bark  do  not  improve  physical   and  mechanical  properties   of  particleboard.

Abstract

The results of laboratory test of ioood-wool  board properties made /Tont nine wood species obtained from West Ka• limantan province are reported  in  this paper.  The properties tested were board density,  moisture eontent.. thickness reduction due to  compreuion  and bending strength. The study revealed that the averageyield of uiood-taoo!  was 365.4 kg per cubic meter of  log input. The wood-wool of Shorea smithiana Sym. must be soaked in cold water for 24 hours prior to manufacturing of uood-uoo;  board, whereaathe other apecieadid .not  require soaking. The  physical and mechanical properties of  uiood-wool boards made from  Bix wood apecies catalyzed either with CaCl2 solution or Ca(OH)2 BUBpenaion meet the DIN 1101 standard.

Abstract

The result of determination of formaldehyde emission from particleboard samples glued  with urea formaldehyde and mixture  of UF and MF resin is reported in this paper. The particleboard  samples were selected from two different factories  in addition  to  those prepared  in the laboratory  at the center. The  values of formaldehyde emission  of particleboard  prepared  in the laboratory  are between 6.154 ppm (Jeungjing)  and  18.720 ppm (meranti kuning), from  factory  A between  0.295  ppm-7.710 ppm;  while from  factory  B between  13.246 ppm-23.691 ppm.  Board samples from factory A glued with mixture of  UF and MF  resins.  on the other  hand,  show an average emission  value of  0.295 ppm.

Abstract

The results of laboratory test on the properties  of wood-wood  boards manufactured  from  19 individual  wood species obtained from  Central Sulawesi province  are reported in this paper.  The tests comprised board density,  moisture  content, thickness  reduction  due to compression  and bending strength. The results show an average yield  of  wood-wool  is 238 kg per cubic  meter  of  log  input.   Four wood  species  required presoaking  for wood-wool  making.  The physical  and mechanical properties  of  the wood-woo/  board  made from  seven wood species mineralized  with CaCl2 solution or Ca(OH2) suspension  meet DIN 1101 standard.

Abstract

The  result of  a study  on  the properties   of particle  board made  from  pine  wood  is reported  in this paper.  The pine as raw material  was classified  into  three groups  i.e.  tapped,  untapped, and combination of  them. The particle  board was manufactured by using urea formaldehyde   resin with  four  levels i.e.   6%,   8%,   10%,  and 12% by weight of wood  dry  basis. The  result  reveals  that  the  average density of  particle board  made of  tapped,   untapped,   and  combination  of  them is 0.61  g/cm3,  so that  it  can be classified as medium  density  particle  board.  The properties of particle  board were affected by both  tapping  and glue proportion.   However, density  and internal bond were affected by glue proportion  but  not  by the raw material.Except for water absorption, overall properties of particle  board made  from tapped pine  appeared to have superior properties  than that from  untapped  one.

Abstract

The results  of  laboratory  test  of  wood-wood board properties  made from  12 individual  wood species obtained  from West Java, Lampung  and East Nusa Tenggara province are reported  in this paper.  The properties tested  were board density, moisture  content,   thickness  reduction   due  to compression  and bending strength. The study  has revealed  that  Eucalyptus  urophylla  and  Eucalyptus platiphylla F.V.M.  obtained  from  natural forests are impossible  to plane  because  they  are very  hard.  The average yield  of  wood-wool   from  the  rest is 454.43 kg percubic meter  of  log input. These  wood-wool   can  be processed   to  become wood-wool boards without first  immersing  them  in cold  water.   The physical  and  mechanical  properties   of  wood-wool   boards made  from  seven  wood species  (meranti  merah I, pinus  I,  mahoni  uganda,  meranti  tembaga,  leda,  akasia and  meranti  merah II) catalyzed  with  CaCl2 solution  are in conformity with  the DIN 1101Standard.   However, only  four  wood  species  (meranti  merah  I,  meranti  tembaga, leda and meranti  merah II)  catalyzed with  Ca(OH)2 suspention meet  the standard  requirement.

Abstract

This  work  investigates  the use of acacia  (Acacia decurrens Willds.)  bark  powder   mixed   with  paraformaldehyde as an adhesive for particleboard. The treatments included powder  contents  of 10, 12, and 14% of the oven dry  weight basis.  The paraformaldehyde   employed  has also 3 levels i.e. 20, 30, and 40%. Material used for this study  was the jeungjing (Albizia falcataria  (L.) Fosberg.) flakes.   The boards were made in the Forest Products  Research  Centre laboratory  to determine  their physical  and mechanical properties. The effect  of paraformaldehyde  content  alone on the overall particleboards  properties  was not significant.  On the other hand,  the effect  of acacia bark powder  contents  on the particle board properties were significant on water absorption, MOR  and MOE after soaking.  Those qualities were better  with higher powder  content.

Abstract

The  laboratory   test  of  strength  properties   of pine  particleboard subtituted  with 0,  20, 40 and 60 percent of pine bark, glued  with  8, 10, and  12 percent   liquid  urea formaldehvde    (by particle  dry  weight  basis) is reported   in  this paper.  Pine  wood  and  its  bark  were obtained   from West Java.                                                                                                                                                    The result  shows  that  the substitution with  bark of  20,  40,  and  60 percent   of pine   wood  particle  improved   water absorption   and  thickness- swelling  properties;   however,  it decreased  mechanical properties of particleboard.  Particleboard with  high  bark  content   has lower  mechanical  properties   than  that  with  low  bark content.   The physical   and  mechanical properties   of  particleboard   that  is subtiuuted  with  20 and  40%  bark and  10 and  12%  urea-formaldehyde resin meet the FAO   standard   for   medium   density   particleboard,  except for,  modulus of rupture. If   we  compared  with  Indonesian standard,  the properties  that do not  meet  the standard  are the modulus  of rupture  and the internal  bond strength
