Abstract

This study aims to determine the correlation among  students’ learning styles, learning motivation, and the eleventh grade students’ speaking ability at MAN 1 Musi Banyuasin Sekayu. The research was conducted correlation research design. This study’s population comprised eleventh grade students of MAN 1 Musi Banyusin Sekayu, sampling through a purposive sampling of 30 students. Data collection techniques used include questionnaire and test. Based on the study results the data showed that (1) there is not any significant correlation between learning styles and speaking ability with a correlation value of 0,590; (2) there is not any significant correlation between learning motivation and speaking ability with a  correlation value of 0.706; (3) there is not any significant  correlation between learning styles and learning motivation with a correlation value of 0,233; (4) there is not any significant correlation among learning styles, learning motivation and speaking ability with correlation value 0,838.

Abstract

This thesis was concerned with the inquiry on the correlations among learning motivation, self-confidence, and writing ability of the seventh grade students at State Junior High School of Lubai Ulu Sub-District of Muaraenim Regency. The problem of the study was to investigate the correlation among students’ learning motivation, self-confidence, and writing ability. The total number of the population were 474 students. The sample for this study was 83 students taken through a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected by adopting a questionnaire for learning motivation, self-confidence, and test for writing ability. Data were analyzed by using r-Product Moment and Multiple Regression. Finding showed that: (1) there was significant correlation between learning motivation and writing ability; (2) there was not any significant correlation between self-confidence and writing ability; (3) there was not any significant correlation between learning motivation and self-confidence; (4) there were significant correlations among learning motivation, self-confidence, and writing ability of seventh grade-students at state Junior High School of Lubai Ulu Muaraenim.

Abstract

This study is limited to the investigation of the correlation between students’ learning strategy, and reading comprehensionof the ninth grade students at State Junior High School 01 Buay Rawan, OKU Selatan. There were 85 students who has been selected as the sample of the research. The writer used correlational study and formula to see the correlation between two variable stated. Correlation about Students’ Learning Strategies (X2) and Reading Comprehension (Y) for 0.028. Sig. Value 0.797 was higher than Alpha value 0.05 (0.797 >0,2146), Ho was accepted and Ha was rejected. In other words, there was no a positive correlation between Students’ Learning Strategies (X2) and Reading Comprehension(Y). It can be stated that Students Learning Strategies (X) simultaneously have no significant correlated the reading comprehension(Y).

Abstract

This thesis is concerned with the inquiry on the correlations among self-confidence, learning motivation, and speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of State Vocational High School 1 of Talang Ubi PALI. The problem of this study is to investigate the correlations among self-confidence, learning motivation, and speaking ability. The total number of the population was 226 students. The sample for this study was 34 students taken through purposive sampling technique. Data were collected by adopting questionnaire for self-confidence and learning motivation, and a test for speaking ability. Data were analyzed by using r-Product Moment and Multiple Regression. The data analysis shows that r_yx1x2 = 0.516 with r^2= 0,267 and p-value is 0.008. This value is lower than  0.05. This is significant. So, Ha was accepted while Ho was rejected. Conclusions suggest that there are significant correlations among self-confidence, learning motivation, and speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of State Vocational High School 1 of Talang Ubi PALI.

Abstract

This study investigated the correlation among personality types, learning styles and writing ability to  the eleventh grade students at Senior High School Number 1 Sekayu. The aims of this study were to measure the correlation between personality types and writing ability, the correlation between learning styles and writing ability, the correlation between personality types and learning styles, and the correlation among personality types, learning styles, and writing ability. In this study, the writer used purposive technique sampling. The data were collected by using questionnaire and test. The data were analyzed by using r-product moment and multiple regressions. The findings of this study are: 1. There was not any significant correlation between personality types and writing ability of the eleventh grade students at Senior High at Senior High School 1 Sekayu. 2. There was not any significant correlation between learning styles and writing ability of the eleventh grade students at Senior High School 1 Sekayu. 3. There was significant correlation between learning styles and writing ability of the eleventh grade students at at Senior High School 1 Sekayu. 4. There were not any significant correlations among personality types, learning styles, and writing ability of the eleventh grade students at Senior High School Number 1 Sekayu. It could be concluded that personality types and learning styles were not correlated significantly with students’ writing ability.

Abstract

This study is entitled “Moral Values and Intrinsic Elements Depicted in Novel Entitled The Land of Five Towers By Ahmad Fuadi”.Data were collected by using the novel. Data were analyzed by detailing intrinsic elements, moral values, and the theoretical implications for English Language Teaching. The findings of this research explained some interesting things about this novel. First, it was about how Alif’s life at present, his life in Bukittinggi and Pondok Madani (PM) boarding school, Alif met with his friends at PM, and they were together to make their dreams come true. This information made this novel more interesting. Second, there were four moral values found in this novel, 1) responsibility, 2) sincerity, 3) patience, and 4) yearning. Abstract

This research was aimed at finding whether the use of Think Pair Share improved the second-semester students’ reading ability at Politeknik Sekayu.Related to the purposes of the study, the research design used in this study was classroom action research. The subject of the study was the students of accounting class 2A of Politeknik Sekayu in the academic year of 2019/2020. Data collection included the application of the Think pair Share technique in three cycles. Data were analyzed using quantitatively and qualitatively. The research findings showed that the Think pair Share technique improved students’ reading comprehension. The technique enabled students to practice some reading strategies in the form of individual, pair, and team. The improvement of students’ reading ability can be seen from the result of the reading test which has the percentage score test 1 is 45%, test 2 is 64% and test 3 is 86%. This research also showed that the activities in the Think Pair Share technique enhanced students’ ability in comprehending reading. The conclusion suggested that the application of the Think Pair share technique effectively improved the second-semester students’ reading ability of Politeknik Sekayu.

Abstract

The research was based on a preliminary study on the problems related to student reading comprehension. The problems of the study were (1) students have little understanding to convey the meaning of words in the descriptive text, (2) long sentences in the descriptive text make students confused in understanding the meaning of the text, (3) students have a little interest in learning and understanding the meaning of the text, (4) teachers have difficulties to find the suitable method to stimulate students in learning reading text. This study was a classroom action research for the seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 2 TelukGelam of OKI and its inquiry to improve student's reading comprehension on the descriptive text through jigsaw teaching strategy. This research was conducted in two cycles, each cycle has four steps these are (1) plan, (2) action, (3) observation, and (4) reflection. To collect the data, the researcher used the instrument of observations and tests. The data obtained were presented in two ways, qualitatively and quantitatively. The findings showed that there was an increasing average score from cycle 1 (61.60) to cycle 2 (83.75). It means that was 22.15% of students improving their reading ability to cycle 2. Based on the result, it is concluded that the jigsaw teaching strategy can improve students’ reading comprehension of the descriptive text in cycle 1 to cycle 2.

Abstract

This research aimed at exploring the challenges faced by Ms. Gruwell, teaching strategies found in the Freedom Writers movie by Richard LaGravenese and the implication of this movie in relation to English Language Teaching. This research used content analysis method. The source of the data is the movie entitled “Freedom Writers” by Richard LaGravenese. Method of collecting the data is through watching the movie. Then, the data were analyzed through triangulation: movie, interview and book review. The finding of this research showed that there are some challenges faced by Ms. Gruwell in the movie entitled The Freedom Writers such as Racial and social discrimination, Mockery and insults actions, unfriendly behavior or negative stereotyping inside the class, History of gang, and Loyalty that had an effect inside the class. Next, it is also found that the teacher applied various strategies such as cultures differences strategies, the fish bowl, free writing, independent study, information-driven and thought-provoking as well as ethnic additives strategies to create a conducive classroom climate that is useful for the teaching learning process and also encouraged her students to get better achievements. In addition, the implication of teaching are using games, tape recorder or song, switching or changing students’ seating position, journal writing, reading motivation, and class discussion or debate.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui bagaimana pendekatan Content Based Instruction Approach dapat meningkatkan Kemampuan Membaca Siswa Kelas VIII di SMP N 1 Indralaya Selatan Ogan Ilir. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian tindakan kelas yang dilaksanakan dalam 3 siklus, setiap siklus terdiri dari tiga kali pertemuan. Data tentang kemampuan membaca siswa dikumpulkan melalui latihan membaca, membaca teks dan observasi. Berdasarkan hasil observasi pada siklus I sebesar 67,50, siklus II sebesar 73,78, dan siklus III meningkat menjadi 82,71 siswa yang menunjukkan sikap positif dalam proses belajar mengajar dengan pendekatan Content Based Instruction (CBI) pada siklus terakhir. Setelah dilakukan perhitungan ditemukan bahwa pemahaman membaca siswa meningkat secara signifikan setelah menggunakan pendekatan Content Based Instruction (CBI). Kesimpulan menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan pendekatan Content Based Instruction (CBI) efektif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan membaca dan partisipasi siswa dalam proses belajar mengajar.
