Abstract

Acacia auriculiformis x Acacia mangium hybrid (Aa x Am) is a promising Acacia hybrid for pulp. Wood properties of the hybrid have been reported for their physical and chemical characteristics, but the fiber characteristics have not been investigated. This study was aimed to investigate the fiber characteristics of the hybrid. Wood samples were collected from three years old of Aa x Am hybrid trees planted in a hybrid seed orchard. For comparison, wood sample from other three species: A. mangium x A. auriculiformis hybrid (Am x Aa), A. mangium and A. auriculformis on the same age, planted in the orchard were also collected. The wood sample was prepared from a slice which was put into a bottle containing a combination of acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide (perhidrol) in 1:20 (v/v) for observing fiber characteristics. The results showed that in general the fiber characteristics of Aa x Am hybrid were comparable to those of three comparison species. The average fiber dimensions were intermediate between the two parents: 0.85 mm, 16.09 μm, 12.56 μm and 1.7 μm for fiber length, fiber diameter, fiber lumen width and fiber wall thickness, respectively. The derived values were variable to three comparison species, with the Muhlstep ratio and flexibility coefficient were slightly lower than those observed in Am x Aa hybrid. Based on the level of fiber quality for pulp, the Aa x Am hybrid was classified as level II, the same level as A. mangium and hybrid Am x Aa.

Abstract

Development of Acacia hybrid is important to be done due to their superiority such as high productivity, good wood quality, more tolerance to pest/disease and adaptive to marginal sites, although its wood durability to wood-destroyer organism attacks is still unknown yet. This study aimed to observe the wood natural durability of Acacia hybrid to drywood termites (Cryptotermes cynocephalus Light.) attack. The wood samples used were taken from 6 years old trees of Acacia hybrid in Wonogiri, Central Java. The experimental design used is completely randomized design using two factors, axial and radial of wood section with the number of trees as replication. Parameters measured were extractive content, termite mortality and wood mass loss. The results showed that the axial section of wood significantly affected the wood extractive content at the level of 0.01, while termite mortality and the mass loss of wood were not significantly affected by the wood section. The largest average percentages of termite mortality and mass loss of wood found on the middle of wood section (96.67%) and near the bark (1.14%) respectively. Based on this result, the Acacia hybrid wood is categorized as very durable wood and potential to be developed as raw material for solid wood-based industries.

Abstract

Research for developing Acacia hybrid (Acacia mangium x Acacia auriculiformis) breeding strategy through establishing hybrid seed orchard (HSO) has been started by BBPPBPTH. Two hectares of HSO was established in Wonogiri, Central Java to produce the Acacia hybrid seed. The orchard was laid out using an alternating rows design among the two pure parent species with spacing of 1 m x 3 m: 1 m within the species and 3 m between the species. The purpose of this study is to evaluate flowering synchronization and seed production in first year flowering session of four years age mother trees in the HSO. The unit area of observation was set up in 0.2 ha within the HSO. During the first flowering session, 100 mother trees (31%) were observed showing synchronized flowering time among the two parents species: 50 mother trees for Acacia mangium and 50 mother trees for A. auriculiformis. Seed production was still low in which only 38 out of 50 trees of A. mangium mother trees produced seed, whereas selected A. auriculiformis mother trees did not produce seed. The average viability of the collected seed was moderately low at 59.2%. Subsequent verification through DNA marker using SCAR and SSR revealed less than 1% of the collected seed were identified as true Acacia hybrid.

Abstract

One of the purposes of seedling seed orchard (SSO) establishment is to produce genetically improved seeds. The amount of genetic gain in the SSO is determined from a series of selection involving within and between family selection in which the gain is generally achieved from the accumulated increases of gain in successive advanced generation breeding cycles. In present study, the amount of genetic gain was predicted in third-generation SSO of Acacia mangium after first within-plot selection using a retrospective selection index’s method. The SSO was established in  Wonogiri, Central Java which was laid out in a randomized complete block design, 65 families, six replications, four trees-line plot and spacing of 2 m x 4 m. Actual within-plot selection was subjectively practiced in 40 months after planting. The observed traits for genetic gain prediction was height, diameter at breast height (dbh), and stem straightness  using data collected at 24 months after planting. For calculating genetic gain based on multiple trait selection index, coefficient weight for each trait was then derived from the selection differential. The results of study showed that the first within plot selection was practiced mostly for imposing dbh rather than height or stem straightness with the relative gain was 6% for dbh, and 3% for both height and stem straightness. Using the derived coefficient weight, the expected genetic gain by family selection was found to be slightly lower than those predicted by within-plot selection at 3% for dbh, and 2% for both height and stem straightness.
