Abstract

Merbau (Intsia bijuga O. Ktze) is an important species to supply wood in Indonesia. Mating system on natural population of merbau can influence genetic diversity of merbau. The objectives of this study were to investigate mating system on natural forest of merbau in Papua. The research used 200 samples of merbau from 10 mother trees in Gunung Meja Forest Research Manokwari-Papua. Isoenzyme analysis was done using four enzyme systems i. e. Peroxidase (POD), Esterase (EST), Glutamate Oxaloacetate Transaminase (GOT) dan Diaphorase (DIA). Data were analysed using MLTR program. The result showed that average genetic diversity (He) 0.463 and total heterozygosity (HT) 0.496. The multilocus population outcrossing rate (tm) and singlelocus population outcrossing rate (ts) were tm = 1.00 and ts = 0.992. Probability of inbreeding rate (tm  - ts) = 0.008.

Abstract

Plants that have mycorrhizal symbiosis tend to be more resistant to the drought because external hyphae of mycorrhizal will expand the surface of water uptake and it can infiltrate into capillary pores so that water uptake for the host plant need will increase. This study aimed to know the response and adaptation mechanisms of mangium in facing drought stress, to investigate mycorrhizal roles in overcoming drought stress on mangium, and to select the origin of mangium seed source that is tolerant to drought stress. The study used mangium seedlings from four different seed sources and was arranged in split plot pattern of randomized block design, with three factors. The result showed that mangium root infected by mycorrhizal decreased along with increasing level of watering intervals. Mycorrhiza increased height-diameter growth and total biomass of mangium for the entire seed source. Total biomass growth of seven month mangium was significantly influenced by the origin of seed source. The highest total biomass was derived from F-1 Wonogiri (7.14 grams) and followed by Group B (6.82 grams), Group C (6.21 g) and Group A (5.84 g). Adaptation mechanisms of mangium seedlings during drought stress were keeping the water status of the plant, improving plant roots system, and thickening the leaf blades.

Abstract

. Community smallholder forests in various places in Indonesia have different characteristics that depend on many factors that cause the development of community smallholder forests. This study aims to determine the characteristics of community smallholder forest management, the components and the interrelationships between the components that constructed the community smallholder forest system. The study was conducted at Semoyo Village, Gunungkidul Regency. Data were collected by interviewing seventy-two respondents who were purposively chosen, then tabulated and analyzed in a descriptive qualitative manner. Diameter of tree measurements on the respondent's forest land are carried out by census. In the next stage, the construction of the community smallholder forest system is carried out in a causal loop diagram based on the management characteristics found. The results show that the community smallholder forest system is composed of the main components of cultivated land, plant resources, human resources, management activities, and the purpose of managing forests. The component of land resources and human resources determines the agroforestry planting patterns chosen. The activity components, which are planting, maintaining, and cutting, have a positive loop and form different stand structures in different agroforestry planting patterns
