Abstract

Abstract

The potential of merchantable timber and firewood of Sengon (Paraserienthes falcataria) in Desa Bateh community forest were estimated by developing allometric equations method. To establish the allometric equations 400 sample trees were measured to determine the relationships between tree heightt (H) and diameter at breast height (D). Twenty trees of various sizes were cut to measure the merchantable timber and firewood volume. The raw merchantable timber volume of sengon (Paraserienthess falcataria) in the community forest was defined as the ligneous material contained in the bole and branches which both a diameters of at least 10 cm. The results showed that D (taken at about 1.3 m above the ground) was a good predictor of H with r2 value over 0.9141. When D was combined with H, r2 was improved somewhat for the merchantable timber and firewood volume, suggesting the growth pattern of tree dimensiions were closely interdependent. A standing stock of the merchantable timber and timber and firewood volume of sengon in the community forest was then estimated based on allometric relations. Proportions of the merchantable timber and firewood volume were 70,84% and 29,16% of total wood volume per tree, respectively, with a basal area of 13.620 m2/ha. Based on th basal area, Desa Bateh community forest could be classified into dense stands category.

Abstract

The degradation of teak forest plantations in Java that are managed by Perum Perhutani (PP) continues to happen, and this is caused by some risk factors such as illegal logging, grazing, forest fire, and encroachment. However, these risk factors have not been considered by PP notably in annual allowable cut (AAC) determination of yield regulation. Therefore, the AAC value could be overestimated. The research was aimed at evaluating the method of AAC determination and proposing an alternative method that considers the risk factors. This research was conducted with a series of data analysis approach from the data on five planning periods. The research result showed that forest damage occurs in varied situations. On average, the rate of deforestation accounted for 0.8% per annum. The calculation of AAC by considering the rate of damage risk in normal condition approximately made up 70.8%. Thus, compared to another method without considering damage risk rate, overestimation constituted 29.2%. In brief, this had an impact on the decline of timber stock.

Abstract

Commercial banks are not interested in providing fund for community-based forest plantation development.  Therefore, in this case, non bank institutions such Forest Development Funding Center (pusat pembiayaan pembangunan hutan, PPPH) are highly required.  This paper is aimed to find out the effectiveness of private forest revolving fund distribution and factors affecting its repayment.  The research was conducted during September–December 2014 in 3 Private Forest Farmer Groups in Katibung Sub-District, South Lampung District, Lampung Province.  The data was collected through household surveys and in-depth interviews.  The household surveys were done using structured questionnaires that included questions related to: characteristics of the borrowers, characteristics of private forest, characteristics of loan, and household perceptions on private forest revolving fund.  Household perceptions on private forest revolving fund are pre requirement, loan procedure, loan realization, interest rate, length of repayment periode, and repayment procedure. The effectiveness of private forest revolving fund distribution was analyzed by likert scale and factors affecting repayment of loan was analyzed by logistic regression.  The result showed that: 1) private forest revolving fund in three private forest farmer groups in Katibung Sub-District, South Lampung District was effective, 2) income from non-private forest and amount of loan are factors affecting repayment of private forest revolving fund, 3) the faced problem in private forest revolving fund distribution could be overcame by maximizing the role of PPPH field officers in assisting and facilitating private forest revolving fund debitors candidate.

Abstract

Social capital has an important role in mangrove management on conservation areas. Utilization of mangrove forest with silvofishery system can be an alternative developed for the community around the conservation areas. The purpose of this research is to know the strength of social capital in supporting the utilization of mangrove for silvofishery. This research adopted Social Capital Assessment Tool method and data analysis with Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modeling. The results of the study found that there were several elements of social capital in five study villages that have not supported silvofishery in Kutai National Park (KNP), East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The overall analysis of the respondents showed that there were five elements of social capital have significant effect on silvofishery. The other two elements were insignificant and should be of particular concern to be improved, i.e. social networks and social norms. Indicators to be aware of were the increased knowledge of communities on park-related regulations, increased involvement of individuals in the community, and the strengthening of public figures who can be role models for the community. Mangrove forest of KNP should be kept as conservation area, but it should still pay attention to the socio-economic conditions of the surrounding community. The strength of social capital is expected to realize conservation-based economic development.

Abstract

The existence of Mutis Timau Protected Forest (MTPF) has given a real contribution to the community by providing household energy needs and raw materials for building the houses. This preliminary study is aimed at knowing the contribution of M T PF in terms of firewood and carpentry wood consumption in the community. The study was conducted in 9 villages located in and around MTPF. This study used surveys and employed descriptive analysis with 353 families spread proportionally on every village as the sample. The results show that MTPF contributed to as much as 87.45% of the total firewood consumption of the community living in and around the protected forest, while the remaining 12.55% was supplied from the gardens. These percentages were calculated from the total firewood consumption of 1,912,512 kg year-1. Meanwhile, every 15-20 years, MTPF contributed to 96.98% of the total carpentry wood needs (1,177.3 m3) while the remaining 3.02% was supplied from privately owned gardens. This fact indicates that the dependence level of the community on the forest is high. Consequently, the pressure on the forest is also very high and may cause deforestation and degradation. To prevent deforestation and degradation, social participation in the sustainable management of MTPF is needed. The principles of social forestry must be implemented through social forestry programs such as community empowerment.

Abstract

Indonesia has potential ecotourism spots that are need to be utilized as well as to increase the value of forest benefits from the aspect of environmental services while maintaining the function of the area. However, there are contraints in managing natural tourism in conservation areas according to the concept of sustainable tourism. This study focuses on the performance of sustainable nature tourism management applied in Taman Wisata Alam Telogo Warno Telogo Pengilon (TWA TWTP) that is carried out in the form of a partnership between the Balai Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam Jawa Tengah (Central Java Natural Resources Conservation Office; BKSDA) and PT. Alam Indah Bonbin Lestari (AIBBL) as the holder of Ijin Usaha Penyediaan Sarana Wisata Alam (Business License for the Provision of Nature Tourism Facilities; IUPSWA). The results show positive improvement in the management of TWA TWTP. However, several issues that require immediate improvement still remain. In general, all of the aspects are categorized in to four scopes: (1) management of effective sustainable tourism destination, (2) the optimization of economic benefits for local communities, (3) the optimization of cultural preservation for the communities and visitors, and (4) environmental conservation.

Abstract

Communities in and around the forest always interact and use the resources to satisfy their daily needs for survival. Forest resources obtained by the community are used to satisfy family needs, and one is an additional family income. This study aimed at determining the contribution of Mutis Timau protected forest to community income. In order to knowing the income that the community earns from the forest, a survey was conducted in nine villages located in and around Mutis Timau protected forest that started from January to June 2018. Nine villages were purposively selected that Mutis Timau protected forest area is administratively under those villages whose communities directly interact with the protected forest. The technique of collecting data was a questionnaire with 353 respondents selected proportionally in each village. Also, observation and literature study were adopted. The data were descriptively analyzed. The results denote that Mutis Timau protected forest provide income to the community through non-timber forest products of IDR1,637,510,566 year-1 of the total income of IDR45,260,686,262 year-1. Community income earned from Mutis Timau protected forest is very low (3.62%) compared to the income gained from horticultural food crops (66.29%) and livestock (30.09%). The income is directly earned from the sale of non-timber forest products to the consumers without having product processes in particular for hunting wild animals, fungus, tubers, and honey. Honey delivers higher income besides other non-timber forest products, such as hunting wild animals, fungus, and tubers.
