Abstract

This research aims to know (1) how significant the influence of reading text based on local wisdom in reading for information subject; (2) students’ perception on using reading text based on local wisdom in reading for information subject. The population of this research was the second semester of students of English Education Department, social and Politic science Faculty, Western Sulawesi University by taking 50 students as samples. The research method was pre-experimental design, with pre-test, six times of treatment, and post-test. Data was collected through multiple choice and questionnaire. Data analaysis used SPSS. The result shows that t-test score and students’ score in post-test was p< 0.05. There was significant differences of students’ score between pre-test and post-test after the treatment with reading text based on local wisdom in Reading for Information subject. Questionaire analysis shows that students’ perception on material using was influencing.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out which method is more effective between the Direct Method and the Grammar Translation Method in improving the reading ability of the students at SMPS Berbudi Kopian. The approach used in this research is quantitative with a quasi-experimental design methodology. The samples are class VIII A students as the Grammar Translation Method class and class VIII B as the Direct Method class. Data were analyzed using the SPSS application. Based on the results of the analysis using SPSS in this study, it was shown that the two methods were slightly improved the students’ reading comprehension at SMPS Berbudi Kopian especially in grade VIII. The results of this study also show that the Grammar Translation Method improves students' reading ability more than using the Direct Method. The results showed that the average post-test in the Direct Method class was 68 and the post-test average in the Grammar Translation Method class was 75. In the table (2-tailed) the independent t-test was more than 0.05 (0.128 > 0.05) it can be concluded that there is no significant difference between student achievement in reading comprehension taught using the Direct Method and Grammar Translation Method. So, the null hypothesis (H0) is accepted.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the questioning strategies used by theteacher in class interaction and the teacher&#39;s preference for using questioningstrategies. The approach used in this research is qualitative. The subjects of thisstudy were two English teachers at SMPN 5 Majene. The subjects of this studywere determined using purposive sampling technique. For data collection in thisstudy used instruments such as classroom observations using checklistobservations and video recording and interviews using a voice recorder. Theresults of this study indicate that the teacher uses knowledge questions andcomprehension questions in the classroom. Based on the results of the analysis ofthis study, the teacher also explained that questioning strategies are very important,especially the teacher uses a questioning strategy to measure the extent of students&#39;understanding and abilities during learning.
