Abstract

Due to an abrupt outbreak of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the educational paradigm has to be shifted to a new era of online education at all levels while maintaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The study aims to analyze the implementation of online education focusing on (1) institutional preparedness of digital infrastructure and (2) students' learning activities during the pandemic. An online survey (Google Survey) was conducted to collect the data, which were then qualitatively analyzed supported by data quantification in percentage. The findings indicate that the target schools managed to carry out online education in response to the government's social restriction. Online education has been implemented in three different contexts, depending on the types and strata of schools-fully, partially, and none of the two. This has opened up prospects and challenges to create different standpoints. The students learn through a variety of virtual learning activities, such as watching videos (YouTube or Teacher's presentation), completing quizzes, doing assignments, discussion via Google Meet, and the like depending on the class design.

Abstract

The current article examined some issues on Kris, a traditional weapon of Indonesia as a high cultural heritage, which is up to now still preserved with all of its manifestations. A Kris may be viewed from its definition, magical charms, parts, elements, maintenance, symbolic values, philosophical meanings, production periods and legendary preservation. Ethnolinguistic investigation revealed that Kris has significantly contributed to the lexical domain, hereinafter referred to as Kris Registers. There are a lot of registers related to its entity, which are of great difficulty for lay people to understand, except those who are really involved in the world of Kris, such as Kris masters (makers), parapsychologist, antiques collectors, cultural researchers to mention only a few. A cultural fact has been identified—that it is the owners’ ways of life in addition to their personal characteristics. One important recommendation of Kris with its all manifestations is that it has to be preserved as an asset of high cultural values through one person one Kris program.

Abstract

The current study investigated a song lyric entitled “Lily” in terms of its generic structure to come up with the rhetorical strategies—how satanic tricks influence people through human greed. Lily belongs to a lyric considered a narrative poem. It is theorized that a narrative poem is a poem or possibly a lyric which consists of orientation, complication and resolution. In other words, a lyric is structured as such to produce rhetorical strategies (goals) which were analyzed employing Aristotle’s ethos, logos and pathos.  Meanwhile, in the complication analysis of Lily, not only did the study employ psychological theory but was also supported by social contexts to describe how satanic tricks were made use through human greed engineering in achieving the goal of negative thoughts generating. The findings indicate that human minds are in fact guided by both angels and satans. Angels guide any individual (Lily) to stay in track of the positive values while Satan whispers tricks to divert from the positive path toward the negative values by means of human greed. To confirm the findings, a survey was administered to 90 purposefully-selected teenagers in Semarang Municipality only to find that “Lily“ song lyrics failed to give any answer to the question whether or not she (Lily) can be saved despite her frequent calls for help.

A critical concern on English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has been voiced to meet the demands for English proficiency to survive in international business exchanges. Not only have most college graduates, majoring in economics and business been challenged by the digital advancement of economics but also the ability to win the tight business competition at international level. This article explored procedures for a syllabus design of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) digitized and functionalized in the sense that it is particularly designed for the online mode of teaching ESP (e-learning) adopting pedagogical applications of Halliday’s Functional Grammar (1994). The digital literacy was much reviewed and discussed for Society 5.0 with the four language skills equally treated within Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL)’s Language Meta-functions with reference to Cambridge Proficiency Level of English (the CEFR). Recommended herewith is to redesign the ESP syllabus to comply with a high-quality education in the digital age.
