Abstract

As COVID-19 Pandemic hit the world, many fields of life need to face some changes. One of the affected areas is academic activity. Since the beginning of the outbreak, academic activity has been switched from class meeting to online meeting. There are various reactions towards the change of academic behavior among students. This article is aimed at classifying the emotions carried out in illocutionary acts used by the students of Politeknik Caltex Riau in regards to online learning issue which manifest in their writing. This research is a descriptive qualitative analysis in which data were collected from students’ essay writing under the selected topic. From 30 articles of students’ essay writing, 59 sentences were taken as data source. In analyzing the emotional classification, Goleman’s theory of emotional intelligence is used. Together with this theory, Speech Acts Theory by Yule (2000) and Illocutionary Acts Theory by Searle (1997) are used. The result of the study shows that there are four kinds of illocutionary acts used by the students in their writing with expressives appeared to be the most frequent illocutionary acts followed by representatives, directives and commissives respectively. Abstract

The emergence of body positivity movement has been popular in online media as the result of society’s awareness towards the phenomenon of body image shaping by media, culture, as well as society itself. The concept of ideal body image has forced people especially women to meet the standard that is often demanding and endangering. Moreover, the rise of social media worsens this phenomenon as social media users are now more exposed to those images. Many parties that have concern in this issue show their concern in bringing awareness to people by posting banners containing body positivity campaign in online media platform, one of which is Pinterest. This research is aimed at investigating the use of figurative language in body positivity movement campaign from the perspective of stylistic analysis. The lexical and syntactic structures of the utterance are also identified. The result shows that from 33 data collected, the type of figurative language used are personification, metaphor, paradox, hyperbole, simile, and synecdoche in which personification is found to be the most frequent figurative language in the banners. The use of phrase and simple sentence are also the most dominant lexical and syntactic structures used by the creator.

Abstract

This research is aimed at finding out the use of rhetorical strategies and speech acts in the speech delivered by the minister of foreign affairs during United Nations General Assembly regarding the conflict between Palestine and Israel. This research applies qualitative method. The data taken was in the form of text from H.E Retno LP Marsudi’s speech that emphasized the stance and the concern from Indonesia as a country which supports the freedom of the Palestine as well as condemning any kinds of genocide The result of this research showed that there were two linguistic features employed in the H.E Retno LP Marsudi’s speech i.e rhetorical strategies and speech act with the proportion of 32% for each Pathos Ethos, and 37% for Logos. Besides, the 5 speech acts were also found in this research with the proportion of 13% for assertive and declarative, 31% for directive, 25% for expressive, and 19% for commissive. This is to prove that rhetorical devices are considered to contribute to the overall persuasiveness and impact of the speech to help the speaker conveying the message effectively and build a comprehensive engagement to the audience.
