Abstract

Thecharacter of coir handsheets prepared with beating and addition of polyamideamine-epichlorohydrin (PAE) was investigated. Pulp coir from soda-anthraquinone pulping was used as raw material for manufacture of coir handsheets. Physical and mechanical properties obtained with different beating level and PAE dosage were measured. The addition of PAE 10% w/w and beating on pulp stock of 3000 rev increased grammage and density at 1.9 and 15.8%, respectively. Instead it decreased thickness by 15.8%. Addition PAE dosage of 10% w/w at 10000 rev improved the density, but decreased the porosity and Cobb60 at 5.8; 10.2; and 19 %, respectively. The highest   dry and wet tensile were obtained at 20 % w/w of PAE. Combination of  beating and addition of PAE on pulp stock formed wet-strength handsheets with range between 28.0 to 34.2%.

Abstract

The overall objective of this research was to develop new compounds with potential biological activity from readily accessed natural products, in particular eugenol. Eugenol has been reported to posses antioxidant and anticancer properties. In an attempt to enhance  intrinsic activity of this natural compound, some derivatives were possible to synthesize. The main aim of this preliminary research was to isolate eugenol from clove oil and made its sulfonic and amine derivatives through chemical transformation. Clove oil was extracted from clove buds with dichloromethane and followed by isolation of eugenol using column chromatography to afford eugenol (73%). Eugenol has been reported to posses antioxidant and anticancer properties. In an attempt to enhance intrinsic activity of this natural compound, some derivatives were possible to synthesize. Eugenol was transformed to its sulfonic derivative in moderate yield by treatment with chlorosulfonic acid and to its amine by reduction of its nitro derivative. This transformation was rapidly confirmed by GC-MS analysis which showed significance molecular ion at m/z 244 corresponding to molecular formula C10H12SO5. and at m/z 179 corresponding to molecular formula C10H11O2NH2.

Abstract

The aim of this preliminary research was to synthesize derivatives of eugenol such as 4-allyl-2-methoxy-6-nitrophenol (2) and 4-allyl-2-methoxy-6-aminophenol (3). The result could be used as a reference on the transformation of eugenol to its derivatives. Theoriticaly nitration of eugenol (1) by nitric acid could produced 4-allyl-2-methoxy-6-nitrophenol (2) and followed by reduction could achieved 4-allyl-2-mehtoxy-6-aminophenol (3). The formation of this product was analyzed by analytical thin layer chromatography (TLC) and GC-MS. These analysis showed the formation of product (2) and (3) were visible. TLC showed product (1) less polar than eugenol and gave orange colour, and supported by GC-MS which showed molecular ion at m/z 209 due to the presence of -NO2 by replacing one H at 6 position of eugenol. Product (3) was afforded by reduction of (2) with Sn/HCl and tlc analysis showed compound (3) more polar than eugenol (1) and (2) and supported by GC-MS which showed molecular ion at m/z 179 due to the presence of -NH2.

Abstract

Xanthones are one of the biggest classes of compounds in natural product chemistry. Xanthones have been isolated from pericarp mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) and then purified with VLC using calcium oxide (CaO) as the stationary phase and eluted using n-hexane: EtOAc of increasing polarity. Extraction of the pericarp mangosteen using the maceration method with acetone as the solvent. The isolation of xanthones was carried out through various chromatography techniques, such as vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC), gravitational column chromatography (GCC), and thin layer chromatography (TLC). The molecular structure of the compound was identified based on spectroscopy data, including IR, 1D NMR (1H and 13C), and 2D NMR (HSQC and HMBC). Based on the analysis of spectrum data, the isolated compound is ɑ-mangostin. The acetone extract and ɑ-mangostin were also examined for antibacterial activity against Gram positive (+) Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) ATCC 25923 and Gram negative (-) Escherichia coli (E. coli) ATCC 25922. The largest inhibition zone was shown by ɑ-mangostin against S. aureus (12.16 mm) more than E. coli (12 mm).

Abstract

The effect of substituents, electron donor groups (NH2, OH, CH2OH and CH3) and electron withdrawal groups (NO2, COOH, and Cl), to the efficiency of corrosion inhibition of nicotine has been studied using theoretical studies. The effect of substituents toward the efficiency of corrosion inhibition of nicotine based on quantum parameters (EHOMO, ELUMO, Egap, I, χ, dan ΔN). The efficiency of corrosion inhibition based on quantum parameters is NH2 > OH > CH2OH > CH3 > BN > Cl > COOH > NO2. The addition of electron donor group NH2 has the highest inhibitory efficiency of 99.79 %. In contrast, the presence of electron withdrawal group NO2 has the opposite effect.

Abstract

Abstract The potential use of coir fiber for pulping and papermaking has been investigated. This research aimed to study effects of pulping processing variables (temperature, pulping time, and alkali charge/solvent pulping) on the properties of pulp (residual lignin, alpha cellulose, kappa number and pulp yield) from coir fiber. For this purpose, the coir fibers were cooked using alkali charge (10 to 20% oven dried, as NaOH), pulping time from 60 to 120 min and temperature from 65 to 180oC. Results indicated that alkali charge and pulping time gave more impact on the properties of pulp than temperature. Pulping at high temperature, long pulping time, and high alkali charge resulted in decreasing of lignin, pulp yield, and kappa number but instead on alpha cellulose content. Keywords: coir, soda pulping, lignin
