Abstract

Abstract

The capability of 15-crown-5 ethers to form complexes with some metal cations (Li+, Na+, K+, Zn2+, Cd2+ and Hg2+) was investigated by an ab initio quantum mechanical method. The calculations were performed at the RHF/lanl2mb level of theory. The interaction energies were used to evaluate the metal binding capability of the crown ether. The effect of nature of the metal on the binding properties was also studied. The results of the calculations showed that the interaction energy of the complexes increased in proportion with the ratio of ion charge, electronegativity and ionization potential to the cation diameter. In addition, based on the extraction distribution coefficient in the gas phase, it is found that the 15-crown-5 could not extract metal cations investigated.

Abstract

The structure and binding energies of 12-crown-4 and benzo-12-crown-4 complexes with Li+, Na+, K+, Zn2+, Cd2+, and Hg2+were investigated with ab initio calculations using Hartree-Fock approximation and second-order perturbation theory. The basis set used in this study is lanl2mb. The structure optimization of cation-crown ether complexes was evaluated at HF/lanl2mb level of theory and interaction energy of the corresponding complexes was calculated at MP2/lanl2mb level of theory (MP2/lanl2mb//HF/lanl2mb). Interactions of the crown ethers and the cations were discussed in term of the structure parameter of crown ether. The binding energies of the complexes show that all complex formed from transition metal cations is more stable than the complexes formed from alkali metal cations.

Abstract

The effect of substituents, electron donor groups (NH2, OH, CH2OH and CH3) and electron withdrawal groups (NO2, COOH, and Cl), to the efficiency of corrosion inhibition of nicotine has been studied using theoretical studies. The effect of substituents toward the efficiency of corrosion inhibition of nicotine based on quantum parameters (EHOMO, ELUMO, Egap, I, χ, dan ΔN). The efficiency of corrosion inhibition based on quantum parameters is NH2 > OH > CH2OH > CH3 > BN > Cl > COOH > NO2. The addition of electron donor group NH2 has the highest inhibitory efficiency of 99.79 %. In contrast, the presence of electron withdrawal group NO2 has the opposite effect.

Abstract

Research on the Effectiveness of Concept Change Oriented Learning with Dual Situated Learning Model (DSLM) Assisted by Multi Representations (MRs) to Improve Acid-Base Concept Understanding of High School Students is a quantitative study which employs a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group design pretest-posttest. The research subjects were 70 students of class XI pattern 5 SMAN 4 Malang for the academic year 2020/2021 which comprised two classes taken by cluster random sampling, one class as the control class (34 students) and one class (36 students) as the experimental class. The research data was collected using the acid-base concept understanding test instrument (TPKAB) which comprised 25 items (17 items for two-tier questions and 8 items for multiple choice). The research hypothesis was examined through the ANCOVA test assisted by the SPSS 21.0 for windows program with a significance level of = 0.05. The results demonstrated the increase in the average value of the experimental class was higher than the increase in the average score of the control class after learning acid-base material. Meanwhile, the results of the delay-test demonstrated the PK-DSLM-MRs were effective in maintaining the retention of students' conceptual understanding on acid-base material. PK-DSLM-MRs gave the strongest influence on the group concept of acid-base strength. The number of misconceptions and students who experience misconceptions in the control class is more than the number of misconceptions and students who experience misconceptions in the experimental class.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore whether Explicit Scientific Inquiry Instruction (ESII) Hybrid Mode in the context of Socioscientific Issues could improve the students' critical thinking skills. The research design was a one group pretest-posttest design. The research sample was 31 science eleventh graders at SMA Mojosari for the academic year 2021/2022. The data was collected using a critical thinking skills test on Chemical Kinetics which consists of 27 valid questions with a Cronbach Alpha reliability of 0.756. A paired-samples t-test showed that the Explicit Scientific Inquiry Instruction (ESII) Hybrid Mode in the Socioscientific Issues context improved students’ critical thinking skills (p = 0.00 < 0.05). The improvement was strong as its N-gain score was 0.58 (upper–medium category) and d-effect size was 1.40 (much larger than typical category). This shows that statistically ESII hybrid mode in the context of SSI can improve students' critical thinking skills. Therefore, this strategy can improve students' critical thinking skills in the instruction that allows students to interpret, analyze, explain, evaluate, and draw conclusions
