Abstract

This study aims to reveal the lexical and cultural meanings in the Seren Taun ceremony, one of the human life cycle rituals performed by the Sundanese people. This ceremony plays an important role in maintaining the social and spiritual balance of the community and preserving Sundanese cultural heritage. Using a linguistic anthropology approach, this study analyzes various terms and symbols used in the Seren Taun ceremony and examines how these meanings reflect the values and worldview of the Sundanese people. Data was collected through participatory observation and analysis of written documents related to the ceremony. The results of the study show that the lexical meaning in Seren Taun is not limited to the literal meaning of the words used, but also includes deep cultural connotations. Symbols such as rice, water, and fire in this ceremony contain meanings related to fertility, life, and purification. In addition, this study found that the Seren Taun ceremony serves as a medium to strengthen the collective identity of the Sundanese people and convey noble values such as mutual cooperation, togetherness, and respect for ancestors. Through this ceremony, the Sundanese people also pass on traditional knowledge and wisdom to the younger generation, ensuring the continuity of their culture amid changing times. This research contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between language, culture, and rituals in Sundanese society. These findings also emphasize the importance of preserving local languages and cultures as part of national identity and world cultural heritage. Thus, this study provides valuable insights for researchers, cultural practitioners, and policymakers in their efforts to preserve and promote Indonesia's cultural heritage.

Abstract

Abstract

Recent campaign models tend to change from the traditional model which commonly happened in the past. If in the past the campaign was identical to speeches, flags, marches, etc., nowadays the campaign can be done by utilizing the digital world as a media, even though the old model is still used today in a fewer portion. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the digital campaign advertisement of Gus Ipul in East Java Election 2018. Using the Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) theory and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach of Fairclough three-dimensional model, researchers want to reveal what message is behind the advertisements. The data in this study are five political campaign videos obtained from online video service providers, www.youtube.com. The videos are downloaded, then transcribed so that the textual data is obtained. These data are analyzed using the SFG theory. From the analysis, the results of the present study show that Gus Ipul’s political advertising is included in advocacy and contrasting advertising. Also, there are two objectives of Gus Ipul's political advertising. The first is to satire political opponents, and the second is to provide information. The information conveyed is by providing positive information, namely by using the lexicon like pengalaman - experience, paham - understanding and amanah -trustworthiness. From the political advertisement model, it can also be obtained that there are four strategies used in advertising viz emphasizing our good things, emphasizing their bad things, de-emphasizing our bad things, and de-emphasizing their good things.

Abstract

This study investigates the reconstruction of economic ideology in the Minister of Finance’s speech disseminated through digital media using Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis framework. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, this research analyzes a transcript of the Minister of Finance’s speech published on the Kompas TV YouTube channel. The analysis integrates Fairclough’s three dimensions: text, discourse practice, and social practice to examine how economic meaning and power relations are constructed linguistically and socially. The findings reveal that economic ideology is reconstructed through the strategic use of crisis metaphors, authoritative modality, intertextual references, and evaluative lexical choices. These linguistic features position the state as a rational and technocratic authority capable of controlling national economic conditions. At the level of discourse practice, digital media plays a crucial role in amplifying and disseminating economic discourse to a wider public audience, shaping interpretation and reception. At the level of social practice, the discourse reproduces a technocratic-paternalistic ideology and reinforces economic nationalism to legitimize state intervention. This study contributes to Critical Discourse Analysis by highlighting economic discourse as a key site for ideological production and state power construction in the digital era, particularly within the Indonesian context.

Abstract

Climate change communication often relies on abstract and technical language, which makes environmental issues difficult for the public to understand and engage with. This study aims to examine how climate change is represented through conceptual metaphors in Instagram post texts published by @greenpeaceid, and how these metaphors shape public perception and emotional engagement. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach. The research data consist of metaphorical expressions taken from Instagram post texts published by @greenpeaceid between 1 October and 30 November 2025, with a total of 135 posts selected through purposive sampling. The data were analyzed using the Metaphor Identification Procedure (MIP) to systematically identify metaphorical expressions, and further examined using Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980) to analyze the mapping between source and target domains. The results show that 24 metaphorical expressions were identified, forming several dominant conceptual metaphors, including Nature Is A Body, Crisis Is A Person, and Ecosystem Is A Building. These metaphors represent environmental issues through familiar human experiences such as illness, danger, physical movement, and structural damage. Furthermore, the metaphors function to make abstract environmental problems easier to understand, create a sense of urgency and threat, evoke empathy and moral responsibility, criticize political systems indirectly, and encourage collective action. This study concludes that conceptual metaphors serve as an effective cognitive and communicative strategy in Indonesian environmental advocacy, particularly in digital contexts, by shaping how the public understands and emotionally responds to climate change.
