Abstract

This study aims to describe the representation of Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (BTP) as a social actor and to reveal the ideological stance of the media in collection of hoax news headlines. The approach used in this study is Fairclough’s three-dimensional model of critical discourse analysis (1995, 2013) with a textual metafunction theory as its analytical tool proposed by Halliday and Mattiessen (2014). The data of this study are 17 hoax news headlines that have been verified by their lies on the website www.turnbackhoax.id. The results of this study are (i) the theme and rheme used in the hoax news headlines can help organize messages and play an important role in the headlines from the perspective of the reader, (ii) BTP was explicitly represented as a social actor in some negative ways in those hoax news headlines such as he is supported by those who are not Pro-Islam, fails to eradicate prostitution, powerful person, not brave and involved in law case, (iii) the media’s ideological stance intentionally contradicted to other national media in publishing the hoax news headlines related to BTP and tended to highlight the news without the clear sources and exaggerate the headlines. Furthermore, the result of this study would be a helpful material source for those who would like to prepare the critical literacy materials, specifically, about how to identify the features of hoax news headlines

Abstract

This research has investigated how English Tempo magazine's cover stories portrayed the Indonesian presidential candidate's rivalry between Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Prabowo Subianto (Prabowo) to audiences. Four English Tempo's cover stories were then selected as the data and analyzed by the Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) approach. Furthermore, this research uses a qualitative method with descriptive perspective for data analysis. Moreover, the results have shown that (i) the presidential and vice-presidential candidates' photographs and caricatures, (ii) the illustrations of presidential candidates' actions related to specific political events at the time, and (iii) the main titles could multimodally portray the presidential candidates' rivalry to the audiences. The photographs and caricatures in the cover stories' pictorial components visually manifested the candidates' rivalry. Moreover, the cover stories' main titles explained the photographs and caricatures. Furthermore, those semiotic components combined in each cover story could modulate some multimodal communicative acts to portray the rivalry between presidential candidates. Meanwhile, the benefit of this research result is to provide the readers with the formulation of how English Tempo Magazine presents the topic of rivalry between Indonesian presidential candidates by visualizing issues concerning presidential candidates in the cover stories.

Abstract

THE COMMENTERS’ READING POSITIONS IN AN ONLINE NEWS ARTICLE’S COMMENT COLUMN: A SPEECH ACT ANALYSIS ON MEDIA DISCOURSEAbstract: This study investigated the commenters’ reading positions in an online news article’s comment column. The first theory that coined the reading position is Stuart Hall. Based on Hall's theory, there are three reading positions for the readers in interpreting a text. First is the dominant or hegemonic reading position that means the readers who fully share the text, receive, and then reproduce it. Second is the negotiated reading position; it means the readers who do not fully share the text yet generally receive it. In this position, they sometimes refuse and modify the text by reflecting their positions, experiences, interests, or even contradictions. The third is the oppositional or counter-hegemonic reading position; it means the readers whose social situation places them in direct opposition relationships with the text. They understand the text but do not share it and reject it. In this study, the researcher used the speech act theory to describe and find out the commenters’ reading positions in the selected data. There are 42 comments have written on the comment column of an online news article entitled ‘Singles in Indonesia are in trouble and under pressure: study’ that was shared on Facebook. The researcher used the qualitative descriptive method for analyzing the data. The results are 14 commenters were identified in the hegemonic reading position, 17 commenters in the negotiated reading position, and 11 commenters in the oppositional reading position. Keywords: News commenters, Media discourse, Reading positions, Single women discourse, Speech acts.POSISI MEMBACA PENULIS KOMENTAR PADA KOLOM KOMENTAR BERITA ARTIKEL ONLINE: ANALISIS TINDAK TUTUR TENTANG DISKURSUS MEDIAAbstrak: Studi ini meneliti posisi membaca penulis komentar dalam kolom komentar sebuah artikel berita online.

Abstract

This research aimed to critically discover the author's ideology in the text entitled "Anti-Asian hate incident reports nearly doubled in March, new data says." In the analysis, the researchers used a qualitative method along with Fairclough's CDA model. As a result, it implied that Americans looked down on Asian-Americans, Americans took their stress out due to Covid-19 on Asian-Americans, Asian woman were the biggest victim in Asian hate, some Asian-Americans living in the U.S. had low economic levels, and the media had a big role in the development of Asian hate cases.  This research result can help more people understand and reduce racism, at least by understanding that human status is the same regardless of race, gender, economy, or religion.

Abstract

Cover story selalu menarik pembaca sebelum mereka membaca isinya.

Abstract

Abstract

This study analyzed the types of lexical cohesion and measured the degree of cohesiveness in “No One Ever Asks Mum,” a short story by Halima Khatun. It used Brian Paltridge’s theory of lexical Cohesion within the framework of Discourse Grammar and Scinto’s Formula, employing a qualitative descriptive method. The data for this study were collected through a documentation-collecting technique involving browsing and selecting the short story from Google Books. The chosen story consists of 67 paragraphs and 670 sentences, which are classified based on the types of lexical cohesion. The findings reveal the presence of 15 repetitions, 7 synonymy, 12 antonymy, 18 meronymy, 16 hyponymy, and 6 collocations in the short story. Additionally, the research also assesses the degree of cohesiveness in the short story using Scinto’s Formula, resulting in a score of 110,44%. This high percentage indicates a strong level of cohesiveness, indicating that the cohesive lexical devices employed by the author effectively contribute to the overall flow and coherence of the narrative.

Abstract

Writing research titles for academic or publication purposes is not easy. The features of titles can be observed in the amount of information they contain and how their structures convey meaning and achieve a particular purpose. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the lexical density level and syntactic structure use in titles of Indonesian and Malaysian Scopus-indexed journals in applied linguistics. It employed a descriptive qualitative research method to analyze 181 article titles using Ure’s (1971) theory of Lexical density and Cheng et al.’s (2012) theory of Syntactic structure. It used the data from the two most recent issues of four published journal articles: SIELE, 3L, IJAL, and GEMA. As a result, it shows that 181 titles fall within the range of very high, high, and medium levels of lexical density, with the very high level being the most dominant. Very high lexical density titles are packed with content words, making them highly information-rich. High lexical density titles also deliver precise information, fitting formal academic writing. Medium lexical density titles strike a balance between content and function words, making them less dense yet more approachable. Furthermore, the titles commonly use three syntactic structures: compound, nominal, and V-ing. The compound structure occurs the most in the data. The findings are expected to contribute to enriching the broader understanding of research title writing practices. Thus, it can be used as a reference for the writers to form the title.

Abstract

This Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) research examined World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) posters campaigning for tiger protection, whose population has been fewer than 5000 in recent years. It uses a qualitative descriptive method with Kress and van Leeuwen's compositional meaning theory (2006) to explore how the composition of the posters delivered messages to readers. Besides, it also tried to reveal the ideologies depicted in those posters critically. The number of data analyzed was  6 (six) tiger posters taken from the adsoftheworld website (https://www.adsoftheworld.com) with the keywords 'tiger' and 'WWF.' As a result, the salient elements of the selected posters represented a critical state of the tiger population. They could also convey to readers that the extinction of tigers can be prevented with a wise life. In addition, both verbal and visual elements depicted several ideologies: (1) the tiger was seen as property, not as a living creature, (2) people could choose to fight for or destroy the tiger, (3) power hierarchy made people unable to act, and (4) the tigers are in endangered states. Hopefully, this research can be used as a theoretical reference for further research on environmental and animal issues in the multimodal field. Besides, visual communication practitioners can imitate or follow the analyzed posters in this research to make any content concerning any life issues by paying more attention to the salient elements in their posters.
