Abstract

This paper aims to explain how the content of the analysis can be used as a framework for investigating the ideologies contained in the text, especially in the reporting of the election. The problem in the current ideological discourse analysis is that there is no explicit and systematic method of explaining ideology and discourse criticism to be unscientific. The research question in this paper how the content analysis framework is presented in the news? How the content analysis framework consists of a content analysis framework leading to prescriptive objectives in the form of a news content unit? In this paper, research data were taken from the 2018 West Java governor election campaign news text from online newspapers. The results of the research were news content raised topics such as social actors, namely figure and groups, and social practice, namely politics, and social actions. Abstract

The multimodal analysis tries to analyze the practice of semiotic discursive or non-discursive discourse such as language, visual images, materials, and architecture. The tool for analyzing semiotic objects is one of the analytical tools in systemic functional linguistics (SFL). The formulation of the problem in this study is the form of representation of ideas in advertising discourse based on the meaning and function of grammatical semantics. Specifically, the research question is the ideology in advertising discourse in ideational, interpersonal, and textual aspects. This study tries to analyze the multimodal element to explain the choice of linguistics and the object of discourse. This research is descriptive qualitative where takes the inductive paradigm. This research approach is critical multimodal discourse analysis with systemic functional linguistic analysis. The research data is in the form of beauty product advertisements in 2017. The results show that the meaning of beauty product advertisements in terms of physical characteristics is white skin colour, sharp nose, slender body, long hair, and white teeth. The concept of ethnically beautiful identity from the two advertisements is different. The local product advertisements emphasize ethnic captivating identity. Foreign beauty product advertisements representations emphasize fair Caucasian beauty.

Abstract

This study investigates English pronunciation teaching practices, challenges, and effectiveness in Indonesian senior middle schools. It aims to identify specific barriers teachers face and develop recommendations for improving pronunciation instruction. The research focuses on internal factors, such as teachers' self-proficiency and instructional techniques, and external factors, including curriculum constraints and student motivation. Interviews with four English teachers revealed that reading aloud is a common strategy for teaching pronunciation, with Teacher 1 using report texts and Teacher 2 incorporating role play. Teachers 1 and 2 actively participate in the MGMP discussion forum to enhance their teaching methods, whereas Teachers 3 and 4 value their phonetics training from college. The study identifies critical challenges, such as students' lack of practice, native language interference, and motivational issues. Teachers 1 and 2 noted that students' pronunciation struggles are compounded by their reliance on their mother tongue and limited practice. Recommendations include integrating dedicated pronunciation practice into the curriculum and using interactive activities to enhance students' engagement and proficiency in English pronunciation.

Abstract

Abstract: In mid-2019, Alamendah Tourism Village attracted over 2,500 visitors from various institutions, both local and international, demonstrating its popularity as a tourist destination. However, the village faced a challenge with a lack of tour guides proficient in foreign languages, particularly English and German, to welcome international tourists. To address this issue, a Community Service Program (PkM) was implemented to enhance the English skills of the tour guides and provide a German language pocketbook. This pocketbook was designed to help guides remember German vocabulary when interacting with foreign tourists. The PkM results showed success in improving the guides' English skills, despite challenges related to training schedules that didn't align with their routines. Participants remained enthusiastic and committed. Additionally, the German pocketbook proved beneficial, although some participants experienced difficulties with pronunciation. Overall, the program successfully assisted the Alamendah Village tour guides in serving foreign tourists more effectively.   Keywords: Tourism Village, Tour Guides, Language Training, Pocketbook Abstrak: Pada pertengahan tahun 2019, Desa Wisata Alamendah menarik lebih dari 2.500 wisatawan dari berbagai institusi, baik lokal maupun asing, menunjukkan popularitasnya sebagai destinasi wisata. Abstract

This Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) research examined World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) posters campaigning for tiger protection, whose population has been fewer than 5000 in recent years. It uses a qualitative descriptive method with Kress and van Leeuwen's compositional meaning theory (2006) to explore how the composition of the posters delivered messages to readers. Besides, it also tried to reveal the ideologies depicted in those posters critically. The number of data analyzed was  6 (six) tiger posters taken from the adsoftheworld website (https://www.adsoftheworld.com) with the keywords 'tiger' and 'WWF.' As a result, the salient elements of the selected posters represented a critical state of the tiger population. They could also convey to readers that the extinction of tigers can be prevented with a wise life. In addition, both verbal and visual elements depicted several ideologies: (1) the tiger was seen as property, not as a living creature, (2) people could choose to fight for or destroy the tiger, (3) power hierarchy made people unable to act, and (4) the tigers are in endangered states. Hopefully, this research can be used as a theoretical reference for further research on environmental and animal issues in the multimodal field. Besides, visual communication practitioners can imitate or follow the analyzed posters in this research to make any content concerning any life issues by paying more attention to the salient elements in their posters.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) in improving the English communication skills of hotel staff, particularly in the context of hospitality services that require effective and professional interaction with international guests. Using practice-based training methods such as role play, simulation, and task-based learning, this study assesses the effectiveness of a contextual approach to mastering linguistic skills (listening, conversation, vocabulary, and functional speaking), as well as its influence on affective aspects such as confidence, cultural sensitivity, and communication professionalism. Using a one-group pretest-post-test design, 22 hotel staff in Lembang participated in intensive training and were tested before and after the training. The results of the analysis showed significant improvements in all aspects measured. The average participant score rose from 48% (low category) to 74% (fair category), with the greatest improvement occurring in the functional speaking aspect. In addition, field observations revealed that active participation in the training increased participants' courage to speak, fostered sensitivity to guest cultural differences, and shaped a professional attitude in delivering services. These findings confirm that a CLT approach contextualized to real work needs can be an effective and relevant training strategy in the hospitality industry. This training not only improves functional English skills but also equips staff with the interpersonal skills necessary in a multicultural work environment.

Abstract

The newspaper media demonstrates clear support for the current government, as revealed in a study that addresses the negative impacts of media bias and raises awareness of biased media agendas. Van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) shed light on how social, political, and ideological contexts influence the production and interpretation of texts. The study focused on a Jakarta Post news article published on oil hike price on Saturday, September 3, 2022e. Through a descriptive qualitative analysis using CDA, the study examined the news text's macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure, uncovering significant bias. The Jakarta Post's coverage presented a skewed perspective on the government's decision to raise fuel prices, acknowledging social and political implications, including the potential for public unrest and concerns about corrupt power.
