Abstract

This study aims to find a form of political resistance of Kiai Ahmad Rifa`i Kalisalak al-Jawi and his followers (Rifa`iyah) against the colonialism of the Dutch East Indies Government in Java in the late 18th century and early 19th century. This study is a qualitative research in the form of library research. This study concludes that the political resistance of the kiai Rifa`i in opposing the Dutch colonial government was only an attempt to engage in anti-government behavior, not with physical resistance. The political thoughts and attitudes of Kiai Rifa`i's resistance were manifested in three things. First, the existence of the Dutch colonial government was a pagan government that was forbidden to obey its policies. Secondly, the traditional bureaucrats, including the headman and ulama who worked with the Dutch, were Dutch minions and they belonged to a group of wicked Muslims. Third, the practice of religion must not be mixed with the beliefs of the ancestors, which are considered heretical and polytheistic.

Abstract

Kiai Rifa'i is one of the leading Islamic reformers on the island of Java, precisely in Kalisalak Village, Batang Regency, around the 19th century. He is a cleric figure who is worried about the condition of the Muslim community, especially rural communities who still lack religious knowledge. He tried to teach with the method of da’wah (Islamic preaching) that was easily accepted by the public at that time, namely the method of Islamic preaching - which might be a new one - by translating Islamic religious books in Javanese. One of them is the Tarajumah book which contains Sufism teachings. The purpose of this article is to find out how Kiai Rifa`i's Sufism thought in the Tarajumah book. Apart from its content, this book is interesting because it is able to instill the anti-Dutch colonial ideology as one of Kiai Rifa'i's criticisms of the Dutch colonialism and the traditional ulama (Islamic clerics) who were his collaborators. The research approach uses library research, namely research that uses literature. In obtaining data, the authors used written materials, such as books by Kiai Rifa'I, as primary data sources; as well as books, journals, manuscripts, and other documents related to the object of research as secondary references which are indeed related to the history, teachings and thoughts of Kiai Ahmad Rifa`i about Sufism and the Rifa`iyah congregation. This research found three main findings: first, the Dutch colonial government was kafir and haram to follow because it oppressed the people; second, the traditional bureaucrats, including the rulers and ulama who collaborated with the Dutch; third, K.H Ahmad Rifa`i taught eight praiseworthy qualities, and eight despicable qualities.

Abstract

This article aims to describe and analyze Islamic thinking about the phenomenon of Youth Hijrah in society. The term is used as an expression of the phenomenon of people who are new to or pay attention to Islam after paying little attention to it before. This research is aimed at answering how Islamic thoughts and views regarding Youth Hijrah, historical roots, the role, and da'wah activities of the Youth Hijrah are associated with the diversity of society in Cirebon. This research was conducted to find out, and analyze about; 1) Islamic thoughts and views on Youth Hijrah, 2) the Historical roots, role, and da'wah activities of Youth Hijrah in Cirebon, 3) The concept of religious phenomenology towards Youth Hijrah in Cirebon. The research approach used is qualitative. The method used is analytical descriptive. The results of this study are: First, Hijrah means "at-tarku", leaving something behind. Hijrah is essentially tarkul manhiyyat, leaving various religious prohibitions. Therefore, true migration is not limited to outward movements but also includes inner movements or changes. Second, the Youth Hijrah Phenomenon is a form of response among urban youth in responding to various social, economic, political, and technological changes associated with religious understanding. Third, the success of a religious movement is highly dependent on the community's affirmation of the discourse it echoes, especially in the Cirebon region, which has a very religious community.
