Abstract

This article projects the syntactical aspects of world leaders' quotes via the X-bar theory. The reason why portraying the quotes utilizing the X-bar is due to the distinctiveness of the sentence patterns of the quotes themselves. By distinctiveness, world leaders tend to use simple sentence pattern in their creating their quotes and due to this simplicity the quote has endless impact and becomes easily chanted and widely known. For instance, the quote 'I have a dream' is very familiar to everyone's ears for partly it uses DP-VP-NP in the X-bar theory. This typicality is exposed through the primary research problems: what are the typical Dstructure configurations of the world leaders' quotes and how are the configurations transformed into their S-structures? Thus, this article focuses on discovering the underlying representations of the quotes of world leaders via the generative and transformational processes. The identified quotes are the internet-based data selected purposively. The article utilizes a descriptive and explanatory analysis. Keywords: D-structure, S-structure, world leaders’ quotes

Abstract

This paper is aimed at analyzing the apology of the then regent of Garut regency, Aceng, in relation to his brief marital case from interdisciplinary critical discourse analysis (CDA). These cover Speech acts, Narra-tive analysis, sociolinguistic considerations, ideologies and hegemonies. All of them are presented succes-sively to support one another to reach a comprehensive perspective on Aceng‟s phenomenal case. Based on the analysis, it is found that Aceng‟s apology is not effective, it is contra productive. In terms of sociolin-guistic considerations, Aceng‟s apology is against the common shared norms as it is not coming from his heart (insincerity). In terms of ideology, it is clear that marriage was considered to be a sacred thing to do and therefore should be kept (ignored by Aceng), whereas divorcing is hardly acceptable in whatsoever rea-sons. In terms of hegemonies, it is also clear that the powerful dominates the weak, implying that Aceng‟s power was wrongly exercised. Keywords: Apology, Interdisciplinary Discourse Analysis

Abstract

This article is exposed to scrutinize one of salient ideas in pragmatics. In this niche, we are centrally concerned with the organization of conversation. Key definitions will come up along the article, and the conversations analyzed here are borrowed from a readily available textbook of linguistics, in which two or more participants freely alternate in speaking, which generally happens outside specific institutional settings. This article tries to look into conversations, pragmatic phenomena. This also proposes a theo-retical phase for a conversational analysis and therefore helps students understand the procedures in analyzing co-present conversational participants. To a certain extent, presupposition may be seen in some basic ways organized around a conversational setting: the way in which information has to be presented if it is to be introduced to particular participants with specific share assumptions and knowl-edge about the world they are in. Key words: Pragmatics, Conversational Analysis, Language Usage.

Abstract

Abstract

Every teaching practitioner seemingly has come to a common term that language advising is essential in language learning especially in fostering language learner autonomy. However, the issues as to whether teachers also serve as advisors or advisors are also teachers, or whether both play separate roles, or they are actually the same individuals who play different roles are still in controversy. This writing is not trying to claim which one is right and which one is not. This essay is just a little lantern on how actually the roles of advisors are exercised by teachers within the context of Indonesian EFL classrooms. Presumably, the advising teachers in Indonesian setting do not only feel responsible for transmitting knowledge and skills, but also for transforming ideas, advice, morality, values, etc. into their learners within and beyond classroom practices. Thus, the inkling of this essay is briefly addressing both theoretical and practical account of language advising within the spectrum of learner autonomy.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the implementation of the "show-and-tell" method, the improvement scores after using the method, and teachers' and students' perceptions toward the method. This research used a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design, which was conducted in two cycles. The data included both qualitative and quantitative data. The quantitative data were gathered from pre-test and post-test, while the qualitative data were obtained from observations and interviews. The result of this research showed that; (1) The implementation of "show-and-tell" method was successfully implemented in the teaching and learning process. It is shown by the students' feeling enthusiastic about the use of media and actively participating in the learning process. (2) Besides that, the results from pre-test to post-test 2 showed a significantly different score. In the pre-test, the mean score was 46.44, then it became 66.60 in the post-test 1, with an increase in students' scores of 20.16 (43.41%). Then, in post-test 2 the mean score increased to 76.26, with an improvement of 9.66 (14.50%). Furthermore, the result of the T-test shows that the significance value (sig. 2-tailed) was 0.00 < 0.05. It means that the implementation of the show-and-tell method to improve the students' speaking skills in the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 3 Karawang Barat had a significant effect. (3) This result is also supported by the data from the interviews with the teacher and the students. They stated that this method helped them improve their speaking skills. The teacher also said that she was satisfied with the students' speaking test scores after using the show-and-tell method in the teaching process.
