Abstract

Speaking ability is very important in English learning to make it easier for someone to exchange information or ideas with others. However, there are still many high school students having problems in speaking. Therefore, the teachers’ teaching techniques should consider increasing students’ motivation, confidence and maximizing speaking activities in the classroom. The use of short cartoon movies is one of the teaching techniques to help teachers tackle the problems. In this technique, students will watch a short cartoon movie based on the topics to be studied. After discussing the events in the movie, the teacher will lead students to be able retelling the movie in pairs in front of the class. By using this technique, students can increase their confidence to speak, reduce boredom due to the use of interesting media and also to improve their behavior through moral values in the story.

Abstract

This paper discusses about one of strategies in teaching English vocabulary; that is through Concept Definition Map. Concept Definition Map is an instructional strategy which used to teach the students about the concept of a keyword that they knew before. This strategy helps the students to find a new concept of the word by filling out some instructions in accordance with the graphic provided by the teacher. The students are asked to re-call their knowledge about the word until they find a new concept in more detail about it. This strategy is very suitable for learning vocabulary through reading activity; besides learn about a text, the students can also increase their knowledge deeply about the concept of words. Therefore, by implementing this strategy it is expected that the vocabulary knowledge of the students can grow easily.

Abstract

Kemampuan berbicara dalam bahasa Inggris adalah kunci utama untuk bisa berbahasa Inggris. Namun sebahagian siswa Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA) masih memiliki kendala dalam hal tersebut karena kurangnya praktek berbicara terutama di dalam kelas. Selain itu, cara pengajaran Speaking yang mo noton juga menjadi kendala bagi siswa, di mana pengajaran Speaking lebih memfokuskan pada teori atau buku. Hal ini membuat siswa tidak lagi fokus dan merasa bosan untuk belajar. Sehubung dengan kenyataan di atas, maka penulis memilih menambahkan teknik yang bisa mendukung siswa untuk aktif dalam berbicara. Teknik yang akan dideskripsikan penulis dalam makalah ini adalah three steps interview technique. Three steps interview technique adalah salah satu teknik pada Cooperative Learning yang mampu membuat siswa bekerja berpasang - pasangan dan dalam kelompok. Three steps interview ini adalah cara yang efektif untuk mendukung siswa dalam membagi apa yang dipikirkan di saat diberi topik, pertanyaan, dan dapat disimpulkan bahwa three steps interview technique dapat diaplikasikan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam membaca.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the students’ ability in translating phrasal verbs presented in sentences from English into Indonesian and the difficulties that they face in translating them. The population of this research was English Department students of Universitas Negeri Padang who registered in academic year of 2013 and the subject of this research was chosen using simple random sampling. The problems that were discussed in this research were how the students’ ability in understanding phrasal verbs through translating them and what difficulties that they face in translating phrasal verbs. The instrument used in this research was a translation test. The result of the research showed that the students’ ability in translating phrasal verbs was quite good, with the score 68.1. Based on the students’ translation test result, it could be seen some difficulties that they face in translating phrasal verbs. First, they tended to translate word-per-word and second, they tended to omit the particle of the phrasal verbs. Based on the statements above, it could be said that the students’ ability in translating phrasal verbs was quite good despite of some difficulties that they face in translating them.

Abstract

This paper explains about the use of the two-tier mutliple choice question to promote senior high school students' reading comprehension. This model of assessment is modification of the traditional multiple choice question. If the traditional multiple choice question provides a question with some optional answers, distracters, the two-tier multiple choice question' model provide an additional question. This additional question is asked about the reason why answering the previous question. This model is aimed to set up the students to be struggling readers. It is also used to measure students' comprehension in comprehend the text. It can be seen from the reason of the students.

Abstract

The writer will discuss about teaching reading comprehension to senior high school by using the reciprocal teaching technique. This technique was firstly introduced by Annemarie Palinscar and Ann Brown in 1984. There are several goals in implementing the reciprocal teaching technique on descriptive text, such as to help students finding main ideas and specific information in the text and to help students in improving the vocabulary. This technique is not only limited to descriptive text, but also to many other kinds of text. By using this technique, the students are expected to be more interested in reading since they are actively involved in the process.

Abstract

Makalah ini menjelaskan tentang penggunaan strategi Spontaneous Speaking dalam pengajaran berbicara. Adapun tujuan dari penulisan makalah ini adalah untuk menjelaskan penggunaan aktivitas-aktivitas Spontaneous Speaking berupa Target Talk, Spending the Words, Say Something Else, dan Pictures talk  dalam meningkatkan kemampuan speaking siswa Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA) dalam pengajaran berbicara. Hal ini dilatar belakangi oleh masalah yang sering di hadapi oleh siswa ketika berbicara, yaitu rasa malu dan takut.Hal ini membuat mereka tidak bersemangat untuk berbicara dan keterbatasan waktu dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris.Untuk mengatasi masalah ini seorang guru harus mencari dan menggunakan strategi yang cocok dalam mengajar berbicara. Salah satu strategi yang dapat diterapkan adalah dengan menggunakan aktivitas dari Spontaneous Speaking Strategy.

Abstract

Speaking is a basic skill that should be mastered by students besides the other skills. However, they find difficultes to speak English. it is caused lack sel-self confident, lack vocabulary, they are difficult to pronounce the words, they have interest to learn English. Therefore, the writer chooses Australia - Asia Debate strategy as a form of speaking practice to encourage students to be active, and confident in a discussion. So, they accustomed to express their ideas in English. In Australia - Asia Debate strategy, students are divided in two teams. They discuss the topic that is given by the teacher. The first team agrees with the topic and the second team disagrees about the topic. Each of team is given an opportunity to tell their ideas and responds the other arguments. By using this strategy, students are expected to improve their ability in speaking.
