Abstract

Feedback is the teacher's comments on the results of student work. The feedback can be written on the work or oral feedback, directly to the student concerned. There are many types of oral and written feedback and each type has a different function. This research aims to analyze the types of oral and written feedback of the English teachers in the teaching and learning process in SMP N 1Enam Lingkung. This research is descriptive research. The subjects of this research were 3 teachers selected by using the total sampling technique. The technique of data collection was classroom observation-video recording and written students’ assignments. The findings of this research are the most type of feedback used by the teachers in the teaching and learning process in SMP N 1 Enam Lingkung is evaluative feedback, with 82 feedback (53,94% of the total feedback). The second finding of the most type of written feedback used by teachers in students’ written assignments is direct feedback, with 80% of total feedback.

Abstract

This research belongs to descriptive research. Based on the English syllabus of curriculum 2013 for Junior High School, most basic competencies are concerning listening and reading skills. For transactional and interpersonal texts, listening competencies are dominant. Furthermore, many students have lower concentration during listening. Students assumed that it is difficult to comprehend the point of the speaker. The educator has a responsibility to know and solve the obstacles faced by students. This research aims to find out the barriers to students listening comprehension. The subject of this research was the second-year students of SMP N 12 Padang. In this case, the writer takes 20% of the population sampling. They were 66 students. There were two research instruments used to obtain the data along with this study. Those were questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaire was used to identify the barriers of the students while the interview was used to make sure the proof of the questionnaire. In analyzing the data, the writer used the descriptive quantitative technique with percentage, as formulated below:P =  × 100 %Based on the data analysis, the students' barriers in listening comprehension were related to two factors. They were external barriers and internal barriers. The external barriers faced by students are the quality of the recording, temperature of the classroom, speaker accents, speaker speed, noises around, and unfamiliar words. While, internal barriers faced by students are anxiety, boredom, unable to concentrate, and loss of focus.

Abstract

Online playing storytelling card is the instructional tool that can be used in language learning. The purpose of the research is to find out whether or not online playing storytelling card is effective on students’ vocabulary mastery at SMAN 2 Bengkulu. This research was pre-experimental research with one group pretest-posttest design. The instrument used in this research was test and to collect the data, theresearcher used rubric as modified from Marek& Wu (2014). In order to determine the successful of the research, the researcher did the one group multiple testing design in this research. Thus, in this research, there are three posttest that are already administered. Based on the data analysis, there is a significant effect of using online playing storytelling card on student’s vocabulary mastery. It was proved that the mean of student’s pretest and student’s total posttest was very significantly different. The mean of student’s pretest was 19,60, Then, the first posttest was 21,7667. The second posttest was 23,50 and the third posttest was 25,9333. Then, the three of Sig. (2-tailed) scores were 0,000 which lower than the determined significance value 0.05.

Abstract

Gender is considered to be one of the distinguishing levels of students' success in language acquisition including writing ability. Descriptive text is one of text types that should be mastered by English Language and Literature Departments students of Universitas Negeri Padang. This study intends to investigate and analyzed male and female students’ writing ability differences in writing descriptive text about describing people, from the aspects of generic structure, language features, vocabulary, and mechanics. This research conducted by using descriptive research and using a test as instrument collected from 26 male and 26 female students of English department, Universitas Negeri Padang. Moreover, the researcher used quantitative data analysis. The result show that male students and female students’ writing ability in describing people at the same category which is good but the mean score were slightly different. The male students scored 2,92 (good) and the female students scored 3,09 (good). Moreover, from all of the aspects assessed female students got higher score rather than male students. In identification the male students scored 3,15 and the female students scored 3,35. In description the male students scored 3,08 and the female students 3,35. In language features the male students scored 2,65 and the female students scored 2,69. In vocabulary the male students scored 2,85 and the female students 3,15. Last, the male students scored 2,88 and the female students scored 3,04 in mechanics.

Abstract

Writing anxiety is a problem faced by the students in writing class. This anxiety can prevent the students from achieving the best understanding in writing. When a student is experiencing a writing anxiety, they will not be able to combine the sentences each other. This will make them get a low result in writing test. This research aims to see the correlation between writing anxiety and writing achievement of Paragraph Writing class in English Department at UniversitasNegeri Padang. This study used a descriptive research method. The population of this research was all English college students of the second semester World Health Organization were already learned Paragraph Writing course in January- June 2020. They were selected because they had taken a course on paragraph writing. The sample was 48 students taken using a cluster random sampling. The informasi were collected using questionnaire from Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory(SLWAI) and writing test to get the result from the writing achievement, which has been administered twice in order to get more reprehensive information. The results show that SLWAI and writing test have nomor correlation with the Pearson Correlation( r=-. 052) which indicated that whenever students have a high writing anxiety so it is possible for them to get the high or low achievement itself. Furthermore, this research related to writing achievement and writing anxiety is suggested to do.

Abstract

This article discusses activities of the lessons that can be done in the classrooms to teach English as a local content at Elementary Schools in West Sumatera based on whole language approach and philosophy. The lessons should be proceeded from whole to parts, learner centered, meaningful for the students now, engage groups in social interaction, develop both oral and written language, and show faith in the learners expand their potential. The activites use literature based materials that provide learning through meaningful interaction by interconnecting of four language skills or modes of communication- Ilistening, speaking, reading, and writing. The skills are taught in context, the materials are organized and studied arround theme. There are group, paired, and independent activities for the students to achieve the objective.

Abstract

This research was aimed to analyze students' ability in reading comprehension using Barrett's taxonomy at English Department Universitas Negeri Padang. The population of this research was students of the 2018 Academic Year English Education study program who had taken reading classes ranging from Basic Reading, Intermediate Reading, Advanced Reading, Critical Reading, and Extensive Reading. The sample of this research study was 28 students using a simple random sampling technique. This research used a reading comprehension test to obtain data. This research used Barrett's taxonomy as an indicator consisting of five levels, namely: Literal, Reorganization, Inferential, Evaluation, and Appreciation. This research is a descriptive study with a quantitative approach that uses tests as instruments. The results of this study indicated that the students' ability in reading comprehension is in the poor category with a mean score of 53.86. This research showed that students have low ability in understanding the evaluation with a total average score of 31.79%. In addition, the highest percentage is in appreciation comprehension with an average score of 56.55%. Therefore, lecturers are expected to be able to improve students' ability in reading comprehension, especially in understanding the evaluation and reorganization by providing a lot of practice both inside and outside the classroom.

Abstract

This study was conducted to see how the fluency and accuracy of students in speaking English using text procedures on students of SMKN 9 Padang in the hospitality department of class 2. This study used descriptive research. Participants in this study were 34 students in the hospitality department. In this study, the instrument used was a speaking test for students. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that from as many as 34 students, none of the students got an E or <40. There are as many as 5 students who get an A or > 80. The average fluency and accuracy of students in speaking using procedure texts in class XI hospitality students at this school get a B value or get a score between 66-79 in speaking using procedure texts.

Abstract

Correlational research was employed in this study. The participants in this study were the first-graders at SMAN 1 Junjung Sirih during the 2022–2023 academic year. There are 29 students in the sample. In this final study, the researcher's major aim was to find a relationship between students' reading comprehension skills and their vocabulary mastery. The data collection techniques used were as follows: first, collecting data from students' vocabulary tests and reading comprehension tests; second, computing and classifying the students' vocabulary mastery tests and reading comprehension; third, analyzing the students' vocabulary and reading comprehension scores; and finally, drawing conclusions based on the data. Based on the normality test results for the vocabulary and reading comprehension test scores, a significance value of 0.20 can be calculated, indicating that the data is normally distributed. The linearity significance score is.0 based on the linearity test, and the variation from linearity significance is.2. This indicates that the two variables are related. Linear. The Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient was used to examine the link between students' vocabulary mastery (as determined by a vocabulary test) and reading comprehension (as determined by a reading comprehension test). To make sure that the assumptions of normality and linearity were not broken, preliminary analysis was done. Higher perceived control scores were linked to higher reading test results (r = -.96, n = 29, p.001), indicating a significant positive correlation between the two variables.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the second-year students’ perception while using Google Classroom in writing descriptive text. The descriptive method was used as the design of this research. The population of this research was the second-year students at  English  Education Department of Universitas Negeri Padang. The researcher used a simple random ampling technique to select the sample, and the number sample was 40 students. The instrument for collecting the data in this research was a questionnaire. The researcher used Microsoft excel 2016 to analyze the data. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that most second-year students' perception while using google classroom in writing descriptive text was had positive perception. The result in this study indicated that the second year students of English Education Department of universitas negeri padang especially in paragraph writing class had positive perceptions while using Google Classroom in learning about writing descriptive text. To conclude that the second year students at english education department of universitas negeri padang especially in paragraph writing class have positive perception while using google classroom in learning about writing descriptive text and also Google Classroom can be use for media of online learning in writing descriptive text
