Abstract

This study aims to know the students’ problems of speaking English and the dominant problems faced by students at grade eight of SMPN 3 Sungai Limau. The design of this research is descriptive research. The data were collected by using questionnaire and interviews. In this research, the researcher used total sample as a sampling technique for choosing the participants. The participants of this research consist of 79 students at grade eight from class VIII.1, VIII.2, and VIII.3 of SMPN 3 Sungai Limau. The result of this research find that the students have problems in linguistics problems and psychological problems. The linguistics problems consist of incorrect pronunciation with a percentage 88.61%, and followed by lack of vocabulary with, and mastering of grammar with same percentage 81.33%. The psychological linguistics consist of anxiety with a percentage 68.67%, mother tongue use with a percentage 72.15%, shyness with a percentage 70.25%, lack of confidence with a percentage 73.42%, and fear mistakes with a percentage 73.73%. The dominant problems face by the students in speaking English is linguistics problems with average 73.51%.

Abstract

In the learning process, learning motivation is one of the factors that influence students’ learning achievement. This research is about students’ learning motivation and their English learning achievement: A correlational study at SMAN 1 Ranah Pesisir. This research was quantitative and used a correlational technique with 329 Phase E students as population. The sample for this research was 66 students chosen by proportional random sampling techniques. The data were collected through questionnaire and English examination test result in even semester. Prior to finding out correlational, the research tried to ascertain students’ learning motivation level and students’ English learning achievement level. The research found out that students’ learning motivation level in moderate category. On students’ English learning achievement, the Phase E students got poor level. For correlation, the study used Pearson Product Moment. The research revealed that there is a correlation between students’ learning motivation and their English learning achievement in the weak category. It was shown by the rvalue= 0,397. It means that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted.

Abstract

This research analyzed the implementation of Kurikulum in the learning process of English subjects at SMA Negeri 1 Palembayan. This research is focused on the implementation of Kurikulum Merdeka in the differentiated learning process in English subjects at SMA Negeri 1 Palembayan. The design of this research is descriptive research. Indicators of this research were devided into three categories based on Tomlinson (2001), three important aspect of student learning needs in differentiated learning are readiness to learn, interest in learning and student learning profile. The data were collected by using interview. The participants of this reserach were English teachers at SMA Negeri 1 Palembayan. The result of this research showed that the implementation of the Kurikulum Merdeka in the first year at SMA Negeri 1 Palembayan was quite good. Teachers use a variety of media, guidance that suits students' learning styles and different assignments according to students' abilities. This method is applied to meet student needs in three categories, namely readiness to learn, interest in learning and student learning profile. From the results of this research, it can be concluded that the implementation of the Kurikulum Merdeka in the differentiated learning process in English subjects at SMA Negeri 1 Palembayan is quite good in meeting students' needs for readiness to learn, interest in learning and student learning profile.Keywords: Kurikulum Merdeka, differentiated learning.
